I will not say that I don't recommend this, because I think it's important to read every chapter in the Higurashi VN, including this one. But I personally found it extremely boring--it took me months to finish it because I really couldn't focus, as it didn't interest me. For reference, I finished ch. 1 within... 3 days? I also didn't find the ending of Watanagashi to be particularly worth all the boring buildup, unlike in the first chapter. This chapter involves more actual lore for Hinamizawa and such, but honestly all the ramblings were just so... idk. If you care a lot about lore, and Mion, then you'll enjoy this chapter. Unfortunately the only parts I found enjoyable were club activities--in chapter 1, I wished they would end, but here, nothing else managed to capture my attention. The voice actors did a great job as usual, though, and I loved the whole introduction to Shion's character. tl;dr - Most of Watanagashi is meh, but it's still a necessary read.

Amazing game but the beginning was so bad that I almost quit. I only recommend this if you skip Chapters 1-2. A few Spoilers ahoy: Chapter 1-2 are hellishly bad, Chapter 3-5 are just ok, and all Chapters afterwards are finally interesting and worth reading. My rant: Chapter 1-2 reads like they were written by a clichĆ© otaku, who lives inside his parentsā€™ basement which he hasnā€™t left in years, who also has a concerning fondness for children and young Teenagers, which is ironic, because that is the exact Person that is being made fun of in one of the Chapters. Chapter 3 is still a mess but more bearable. First things first, the negative aka. The Chapters 1-2 of the Game Chapter 2. I have no idea why the hell every male in these two Chapters seems to be written like a pervert or child-molester. If you took a shot every time someone sexually harassed or thought about a minor in a sexual way, you would end up in the hospital. The way minors, like Shion, are presented is also very disgusting given that she is 14. An entire chapter is about how she is being lusted after by YOUNG AND GROWN MEN ALIKE, Like Keiichiā€™s Father for example, who dragged Keiichi to a cafe to *stare at the women, in which at least one is underage who wears revealing and fetishizing clothes. God, I know this game is over 20 years old, but I had hoped that even a game from that time wouldn't have so carelessly thrown sexual assault and paedophilia around like it's nothing. How do you look at a 14-year-old and get the hots? Hell, one was even younger! In Keiichiā€™s case, and the case of his 2 perverted male classmates who lust after Satoko and Rika so much that they want to taste their saliva, you can excuse it partially by saying that they are Teenagers, but for fucks sake, even a Teenager shouldn't like the idea of a child, in this case Rika, being forced into prostitution, which is something that was talked about in one of the TIPS. Why the hell did he get nosebleeds from imagining that?! This made me dislike Keiichi extremely, which is a shame because he seemed completely normal in Chapter 1. The term ā€œSnowflakeā€ is being thrown around a lot nowadays but, while I understand that some people can indeed be too sensitive, it shouldnā€™t be considered a ā€œSnowflake behaviourā€ to criticize the sexualization of minors. If they were adults? Still disgusting but a lot less concerning. The only way I can imagine why this happened is that they wanted to appeal to the male audience of the time by including lots of sexually charged moments in order to catch them and make them continue reading. There is an entire TIPS which shows the story of a guy that lewdly photographs women without their knowledge nor consent. Great. This is a horror game and yet the most frightening part for me is the rapey dialogue. Do yourself a favour and skip most of the first and second chapters. 90% of it is Keiichi, his classmates or sometimes his father, being extremely creepy. Guess the apple doesnā€™t fall far from the tree. Also, the beginning is, once again, very slow, which I had expected. Now to the positives: Thankfully, once you enter Chapter 3, the extreme perversion finally comes to an end and we can explore more of Higurashis story. (Never mind, there was a scene where Shion was almost forced to rub a manā€™s crotch because she spilled some food on it. After a while, Keiichi helped her after stating that itā€™s ā€œHer faultā€ and that ā€œshe wasnā€™t in any dangerā€ and that he only helped her because he was in her debt. What a nice guy. TM. Once again, SHION IS 14. This is also the game where Keiichi says ā€œHeil, Mein FĆ¼hrer.ā€ lol) Outside of Keiichi having been mysteriously transformed into a Henati Protagonist, every other character stays true to their quirks and personalities from Chapter 1. I was quite pleased about at least that remaining consistent. Finally, at Chapter 5, things start getting interesting. The dialogue, at this point, is back to its phenomenal state. The story is fascinating and intriguing, the use of unsettling music and pauses perfect and, most importantly, it made me crave more. Just like Chapter 1, there were moments where I shivered in fear, looking around my room in a panic. They expand on the story, and I deeply enjoyed the moments where I got to wonder, along with Keiichi, what the hell is going on. The ending was scary and satisfying with lots of twists that didn't feel over the top for me. All in all: The people responsible for writing these Chapters clearly have talent but they tend to waste it in the beginning with over-the-top sexual jokes and innuendos. I hope that has changed with time. I have no idea how there can be such a huge difference in quality but, sadly, there is. The farther you get in this game, the better it gets. Itā€™s just a shame that, in order to find the gold, you must dig through dung first. If it werenā€™t for how much I disliked the beginning, I would claim this game to be better than the first. Shame.

I now understand the entire history of Curry and why it is the greatest food to ever exist. At least I don't have to deal with a needle in my food, or anything used for piercing, right? Right...?

Higurashi is a story with a world that invites you to think of simpler times, and characters that all fulfill their role in society convincingly and in a way that its contemporaries do not. Watanagashi is a page turner follow-up to the series pilot, further enchanting you with the mystery and atmosphere of its setting. Read in original Japanese NVL with 07th Mod. Original backgrounds and console sprites recommended.
