okay it admittedly took me like 3 tries to fully get into higurashi between 2015 and 2020, and the third time it finally stuck. you have to trudge through a LOT of inane and at times really gross dialogue relating to the five main characters especially in the first couple hours of reading. it sucks to say this, because every other aspect of higurashi's writing is top notch. every screen and every descriptor of hinamizawa makes you feel like you are right there in this small little town, getting used to the sights and sounds along with keiichi, and it feels so NICE. I always found myself wanting to learn more about the town and their specific culture with the watanagashi festival, and the hard pivot following the event into full blown psychological horror is just SO good. onikakushi is a masterclass in tension building horror. i love how we're following side by side with keiichi, reluctant at first to suspect his classmates of being involved in the mysterious disappearances and the grand conspiracy considering all the time we've spent together with them, but eventually our defenses are chipped away as more and more suspicious coincidences start piling up and we have no choice but to be on our guard as readers too. it really is like reading a gripping horror novel with how many stomach dropping moments there are in the back half of the story. and the intense climax with so many lingering plot threads leave you desperately wanting more. I think if it wasn't for how amazing ryukishi07's writing is overall, I wouldn't have wanted to keep trying to finish this sound novel series. I want to be able to recommend higurashi wholeheartedly the same way I do umineko, but man it is so hard to get over some of the more gross, cliche, bog-standard anime moments that are littered throughout the slice of life scenes, particularly involving the underage main cast. mion, rena, satoko, and rika are all deeply nuanced characters and were very clearly written with purpose and thought behind them, and it sucks to see them at times reduced to gags or gross sexual jokes. which unfortunately is a prevailing theme throughout higurashi, especially before the action really kicks in overall, 8/10. really strong start to the sound novel, and an incredible horror story even on its own.

Came for the "horror", stayed for the plot. The first chapter is free, but I'd pay for it. Read it. The true mystery of it all still keeps me up at night. Probably one of my favorite VNs of all time. I don't really have more words, just a heck of a lot of feelings. I really should watch the anime at some point, eh? ♥

I already knew. And it was still amazing. I'm fairly familiar with Onikakushi. Watched the anime for it and read the manga (I even rewatched it once with a friend). But by far the best version is the og, the VN. Each version has it's points, the anime really nails the atmosphere, and the manga is straight up suspenseful in a way you can't explain better then "turn the page." The VN however, really has the whole cake. The ost is great, I like the backgrounds, and the character art is simple yet effective. One of the biggest things that sets the VN apart from the several adaptations is the tips. As a person who loves to wring things dry, the tips are a wonderful inclusion. They are so good for adding that extra bit of detail that I crave from one of my favorite things. Last point for the VN is in the medium itself. Reading a VN already has several perks for immersion and creating a finer audio visual experience. But seriously, the ability to stop for a moment and take a deep breath is so invaluable to the experience. Setting the pace of the horrors awaiting you, to your own mouse clicks was surprisingly engaging. And makes for some nice moments where I purposely slowed down during more intense parts to enhance that intensity. Higurashi no naku koro ni is one of (if not) my favorite horror stories/experiences ever. I'm a big enjoyer of this franchise as it is. And after a long break from it, I really wanted to re-experience it again. And I'm very happy that I decided to finally do that by reading the VN. I'm so into this shizz that I'm literally taking notes as I play. If that doesn't show you how much this game got me invested, then I dunno what will. Highly recommend for horror enjoyers, and adaptation enjoyers that want a little more.
