Should you buy this game? Yes ... but when there is a discount. Expect around 8 - 14 hours of gameplay, depending on if you are going after the achievements. TLDR: The game has a great atmosphere, which gives a nice eerie mood. After a couple of successful jobs it become less eerie and the maps become really repetitive. The combat is unique and kinda fun. The devs should add more variety and rework the payout for the difficulties. The beginning is very grindy, but after you get a good weapon the game becomes really easy (which can be up to 6 hours of gameplay). Sadly the devs have given up on the game, so this will most likely never happen. --- Atmosphere The devs have created a awesome atmosphere. All maps are dark and gritty which portrait a dark and grim world. Maps have limited lights and a lot of shadows/ dark corners which give the feeling that you are being watched. All (3 of the) maps have good ambient sounds, e.g. creaking floorboard, sudden noises and slight shakes. Then the cryptics are added to the mix, there is a large variety of them and you (kinda) never know where they are. Sadly you will only get a selected few on each difficulty. The biggest repeatable heart attack has to be the dresser that is floating and getting thrown at you. Sadly when you have played it for a bit, everything become repeatable and you can guess where the cryptics will spawn. Skills Every time you level up, you will gaining a skill point. You can use them to unlock various skills like healing upgrades, artifacts, attachments, armour or diagnostics upgrades. To make your life easier, unlock the medic skill. You get WAY more healing done when upgrading your gear. Gear Talking about gear, there is a lot. You can buy weapons, tools, armour, attachments, artifacts, traps, healing items and more. When you take a look in the shop its pretty clear what everything does. Acquiring as primary weapon as fast as possible is recommended, since combat become a lot easier. Tools are a must, since you need them to find signs. At harder difficulties there will be interference, which will be countered by higher level gear. Signs Note: With tiers I refer to each step you can fill with evidence you find on the boss. When use the many tools, you can find signs . To find out which boss you have and what its extra information is you have to find these clues. You can find two types of signs: evidence and clue. You need 2 evidence to summon / unleash the boss, and 1 evidence and 1 clue to get extra information for the other 3 tiers. The 2nd tier gives the boss type and the last two give extra information on damage and resistances. The last 2 are not always needed (especially late game) but it makes the game easier. Bosses Every job, except sweeping jobs, features cryptics and a boss with specific vulnerabilities to certain ammo types and traps. By finding the all the clues, you can find ways to increase your damage and resistance. The usages of traps is a must with the endgame bosses. With the toolbox you can customize the traps to do more damage (which can be found with the tier 3 & 4 information) Combat Combat is a bit of a mixed bag for me. You have to be strategic and tactical all the time while traveling through the map. You have limited ammo, traps, weapons and healing. Each cryptic has a specific ammo type to which they are vulnerable, and using the right type does extra damage. I like this feature, but you're limited to the amount of weapons you have. Early game it can be hard, since you only have a single sidearm and can use one ammo type while in combat. Note: Before combat you can switch ammo types. Once you have a primary and secondary it become less difficult. You still have to grind a lot to get better weapons. More on this later. Healing Healing is limited at the beginning you have 2 stims, which can be used while in combat, and a medkit with 100 hp. They will heal you to full... but it remove 20% of your health point with each use. Medkits can be used only outside of combat and can restore a max of 100 hp. The medic perk gives you access for better medkits and stims. With the best gear you can have 3 stims and a medkit with 360 hp, which is essential for endgame. Grinding Most good weapons are around 4k (in the past it was 40k!). Early game you have to grind a lot, since the awards of completing missions is insanely low. You have to grind to buy e.g. a primary, armor or better medkits. Later on it becomes easier and easier. When you can finish poltergeists (max difficulty) it becomes stupidly easy to get gear. You can get up to 12k per run if you do everything. After defeating my first poltergeist, I was able to get all the gear I needed, making any subsequent encounter much easier. --- So, should you buy the game? The game offers a nice atmosphere and unique combat mechanics that can provide a nice experience for horror fans. However, the game has a repetitive nature and initial grind. There (most likely) won't have any ongoing development, so don't expect any updates. Its worth purchasing, but it's best to wait for a discount .
