Fantastic game. I pirated it a while back and have absolutely no regrets buying it. This two person dev team deserve it and I can't wait to see what they have in store. Currently there's a short story mode with more episodes to be released as development continues, however the true star in this game is its combat. The controls are simple, but the gameplay has depth thanks to a variety of characters with different fighting styles. Injuries are simulated with accurate hitboxes and physics based combat. Positioning and timing is paramount; duels can be over in a second if you're sloppy. Fun game, would recommend

I fenced when I was a teen. A lot. The politics were horrible though and drove me away from the sport. But as a kid that was truly passionate about it and a huge fan of movies like The Duellists (from which my eldest son takes his name), this game is the best of its type.

This game makes me want to get into Hema, my uncle showed me this game a while back and while I dont play it as nearly as often as I should, I genuinely love this game and I thank the devs for being imo the leading force into getting us a proper realistic sword dueling game. Its easy to pick up and enjoy and fun to master! Whenever my friends come over they enjoy the quick battles and goofing around with the different styles and reacting to the brutal deaths. Keep up the amazing work Kubold!

The game is great and unique and deserves a LOT of attention, but PC UI controls are horrible, all buttons are not dynamic to your changes, which creates some confusion. Also, there are no indicators what to click on character selection window, no button to rechoose character, etc. It is not crucial, but a little bit annoying, hope those minor issues will be fixed in the future.

Many other reviews have commented on how online multiplayer uses a third party program or steam remote play or how the game doesn't have enough content. The game is quite cheap but unless you are really into HEMA or looking for something novel, I cannot recommend this game for single player alone at this stage (15th February 2024). Other negative reviews will go into reasons why and the more detailed among those are worth a good read as to why the game may not be recommended. However, there is one thing that is sometimes overlooked when buying Hellish Quart: This game is an absolute blast at parties and local meetups when you can have 2 real life players sit down with controllers and just fight each other. People who don't even like fighting games will intuitively figure out their character's moves and what works. There is something incredible watching two newbies fight each other only to see someone get decapitated and the people crowded around the screen gasp and laugh. Fighting games are often a seemingly insurmountable mountain of practising combos in labs and memorising frame data and strategies yet place 2 newbies in front of the game in a meetup and they'll excitedly scroll through the character screen between "axe guy" and "overpowered rapier girl NOOOOOOOOO don't pick her you're mean!" and "OMG! Is that a drunk monk?!" then laugh as one gets a lucky hit on a wrist or they secure a double wounding. This game comes with a "has potential so keep an eye on it for it's early access progress 5 years down the line or buy it maybe if you like HEMA I guess?" recommendation if you'll play it alone or with online multiplayer (whether third party programs or steam remote play). It really runs a moderate-strong risk of being one of those Steam games you'll play for a day (approx. 6-8 hours), think that's neat, then in 2027 see that the last time you played it was 2024 and then you play it for 20 minutes and realise why you stopped. Have a quick observation of some of the review playtimes at this point in time if you doubt this (sort by minimum playtime and watch those reviews plummet in frequency). You know precisely what I'm referring to when I describe a game like this and you can scroll through your own Steam library to refresh your memory as to how many games you've treated in a similar way. Yet in spite of that it comes with an incredibly strong "BUY IT" recommendation both at full price (approx. $16 USD) and on sale for solely local multiplayer (and especially so if you know people that aren't that into fighting games). The low playtime on this account is because it is more often played offline where hours are not logged. After experiencing how good this game is in local multiplayer there's no real reason to play it online or connected to Steam. If it weren't for local multiplayer I'd probably actually be regretting this purchase even on sale.
