It's a great game but don't expect any multiplayer in 2024

Single player top-down extraction shooter with eldritch enemies set in a 1900s Century City. It does have multiplayer, and in fact was all it launched with, but the population is long dwindled away, which is fine by me. I love the idea of extraction shooters but always hated the gank-or-be-ganked pvp, and single player offerings of the genre are few and far between. Just don't be stingy with the ammo and supplies even in SP, the Things can still pile on unexpectedly at times and you're as liable to run out of a fight as you are to run into a new one.

This is a lot of fun to play with a friend. Very unforgiving if you die late game for single player, and wish there were more people playing in the multiplayer lobbies, but still fun.

This is exactly what The Day Before was supposed to be. It's pretty crazy how similar the games are in premise despite how different they look (although these devs obviously care a bit more). You load into a static map - search for loot, complete quests, attempt to not get turned into paste- and then take the randomly spawned extract (or one of a few extracts in multiplayer) sometime after the halfway point in the raid to leave. Simple premise but since raid times are limited you are forced to do several to progress the story, and you will die in many of those raids forcing you to build up your character again. This gives the game a ton of replayability even in just the singleplayer environment. There are also NPC vendors scattered all throughout the map that allow you to purchase supplies, weapons, and furniture for your condo with the in game currency. After getting a nice cushion of money stashed this allows you to bounce back relatively quickly after deaths ensuring you don't have to roam the streets with an empty inventory for too long. As for buying furniture, all furniture in the game takes up a certain amount of space in your condo, and provides unique passive buffs to your character, with some furniture having more storage slots. As you progress the story and upgrade the size of your condo, you can buy and place more and more furniture slowly buffing your character with dozens of small passive buffs. This provides a near infinite money sink with infinite furniture (and therefore character) customization, incentivizing players not to hoard their money and gear. Also since the game doesn't really tell you, you have separate progression in the singleplayer and multiplayer versions. If you get the hang of the game in singleplayer give some multiplayer runs a try. I have not run into any players in multiplayer yet and i would love to see some rivals, but raids will start after a minute or so of matchmaking even if there is no one else in queue. So even if you happen to get rekt by some geared player early on in multiplayer, odds are many of your raids will be alone anyway and it is easy to regain your losses with the starter pistol and some ammo off the street. You can also invite friends to your group to up your odds. There's no reason not to give multiplayer a try if you like the singleplayer. Without spoiling too much of the story, the story progression can be infinitely repeated, opening up a sort of 'prestige' mission after completing all main story missions. You can also neglect to accept the prestige mission allowing you to continue on your current progression for as long as you like. imo one more reason to get on that multiplayer grind

Its addictive. The Singleplayer Mode was def the right way! Will probably go multiplayer when I have finished the story. Its still difficult and tense, I love it! 13 hours in not even 2 days. You should put a warning label on the steam page!!!!
