I went in blind, never expecting much about this game. I expected slice of life/comedy; I got sadness as a result. Either way, don't read this if you're expecting a laugh. I mean, there are a lot of funny scenes, but they're not the focus in this game. Readers might get turned off/annoyed by the main character, but I think he has decent character development. Although the pacing is out of place, Aya and Sakura's route made me appreciate the true ending even more. I really enjoyed this one.

Hatsuyuki Sakura is a very interesting work to me. To say I got what I expected out of this VN is certainly a stretch, as it's not what you'd expect out of SagaPla based on their other currently translated works, yet it has managed to acquire an even better reputation amongst most - now personally, I'm surprised it has earned said reputation. It is my least favorite of the SagaPla works I've read so far (only my 3rd, to be fair) due to a multitude of issues such as characters being extremely unlikeable at times, extremely weird pacing, so on and so forth. I would be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little bit disappointed, as my prior experiences with Saga Planets works are more or less perfection catered exactly to my taste. However, despite all the negative things I can say about HatsuSaku, they do not tell the full story of how I feel about this story. By the end, there were multiple parts of this story that moved me extremely heavily. Despite the way it got there, what the final part of Graduation did for Hatsuyuki as a character was an extremely powerful message in my eyes, and exactly the resolution he needed as a character that had got under my skin for a large part of the story. The way he was used to convey the message of continuing to move forward, no matter what, is something that has always resonated strongly with me. Even despite all the shit this VN put me through, the way they conveyed that in the ending was more than enough for me to absolutely adore it in the end. However, he is nowhere near the highlight of this story. My love for Sakura as a character far surpasses even my love for this story tenfold. She is one of the best characters I've ever had the pleasure of getting to know, and I'd be willing to bet that she singlehandedly made this VN great for a lot of people. I absolutely adore her beyond belief, and she is the main reason that this story will remain a favorite of mine for years to come. Her ability to act the way she does despite how tragic her story is truly resonated with me. I will also shortly note that the on the production side of things, the upscale is extremely disappointing. It was completely unnecessary, and unlike the Kinkoi upscale also done by NekoNyan, it really does not improve the graphics in my eyes, you can see how poorly done it really is in the CG gallery preview images, just not great. Hopefully NN does not upscale any more VNs this way. In the end, while it's not perfect, nor would i describe it as a kamige as many do, it is a flawed yet fantastic work that I will never forget reading. A generally amazing cast that despite the story issues, makes this story one of a kind. I'd be hard pressed to say this story was not a personal 10 despite everything. I'm not sure if I'll ever re-read it, but at the very least this first experience will always be in my heart. BUNNY!! Append - After ruminating on my thoughts overnight and truly thinking deeper about this story, I believe I now understand why it gets the reputation it does. I underestimated truly how cathartic that ending was, after all that had happened, and simply thinking back on everything brought me to tears multiple times. This is truly a once in a lifetime story, and I'm so glad I got the chance to experience it. I couldn't recommend it enough.

Hatsuyuki Sakura is a Niijima Yuu (a large portion of Summer Pockets and Majo Koi Nikki / Witch's Love Diary are likely his most well known works among English readers) written visual novel that falls well into the nakige area, with some people arguing that it crosses over into utsuge territory. I mention the writer because there are some similarities in his writing across his works, so if you either liked or disliked his other works, chances are this will end up in a similar place for you. It's a mystery with some romance elements, but has an abrasive MC that not everyone will like. The story is written fairly well, and has its moments where it is funny, serious, and emotional. However, the story is somewhat let down by what feels like a rushed ending, some things not being explained properly as well as some inconsistent pacing. The music in the VN is amazing though, and there are 19 H-scenes present, most of which are fairly good, one of which was creepy, and one was the most hilarious - I still haven't decided if it was unintentional or intentional though - H-scene I've ever read. Ultimately I'd recommend this to any reader who is okay with a nakige story. That's all the detail I'm going to go into regarding this VN, as I feel like any additional detail past these broad generalizations will lessen what impact the story could have on you if you choose to read it.

A pretty good game especially if we consider the low number of winter-themed visual novels in general. People like comparing it to Key (no wonder when Key itself would hire the scenario writer and composer later), but I suggest giving it a chance even if you don't vibe with Key that much because HatsuSaku quickly introduces its mysteries and melancholic mood without requiring you to read hours of slice of life scenes. Its structure is different, and it influences your impression. I mean, the game still has a ton of funny moments, but it's almost always serious at the same time with sad music playing on the background and some twists happening Overall I had a lot of fun with HatsuSaku. I enjoyed Niijima's humor, Hatsuyuki was a badass protagonist, and serious moments kept me waiting for more
