TLDR: Easily one of the weirdest games ever made. Point-and-click gameplay meets a bizarre story packed with social commentary and shock-value. Took less than 6 hours to complete. Pros: - Far from flawless, but intriguing story will keep you hooked the entire game. The writers are extremely creative and no subject matter is taboo. - Great art-style with an impressive blend of pixel art and live-action rotoscoping. Ahead of its time. - The shock value and humor make Harvester an unforgettable experience. Cons: - Some aspects haven't aged well since 1996, as you'd expect. Wonky controls, the monitor refreshes resolutions in between cutscenes and gameplay. - The story becomes a bit self-indulgent by the end. - The second half of the game feels like the developers started throwing random ideas at the wall. The third fourth of the game is relatively weak; but the game gets back on track right at the finish line (pacing issues). - Some puzzles are incredibly obscure/difficult and don't feel fair.

Harvester is an amazing time capsule of the 90s ESRB panic about violence in video games. This game isn't for everyone, it boasts itself as "the most violent game ever made" and it is incredibly bizarre. I have a video here showcasing the game and the reason it was created here: https://youtu.be/tzP-OTJcuh8?si=RS6TOdSZpTXUabq5

“You always were a kidder, Steve.” Harvester is one of those games that you, for better or worse, never forget having played for as long as you live. Lumped in with just about every other banned video game talked about on YT, Harvester was controversial upon its release due to excessive violence, gore, perverse content, and just about everything else that parents were up in arms about at the time. However, I feel the genius behind this gem of a game is its examination of violence that was and continues to pervade society through perpetual institutions such as the military-industrial complex, religious fundamentalism, the media, the nuclear family, and so much more. Rather than tackle these complex issues or address their ills, most ignore them or even go so far as to censor anything and anyone who brings them up. Harvester does such an excellent job of portraying this by having Steve, the protagonist, go through various trials and tribulations as one of the only sane characters in a world full of maniacs and bystanders who get in your way by making very little sense or by outright trying to harm you. Everything you witness and do in the game, especially when within the lodge of the Cult of the Harvest Moon , is designed to make the player think about real-world moral and ethical dilemmas and where they can literally or figuratively lead to. I could go further into this, but it would take far too long. Ultimately, the game offers a critique of American society using stomach-churning visuals and hilarious B-movie FMV acting that left a significant psychic impression on my mind. The gameplay doesn’t matter since it isn’t the point of the game, and it isn’t going to impress almost 3 decades after release. Play it so you can say you have and think upon every claim sowed by the people of Harvest. At the end of the game, you will reap the decision your soul has grown.

a far more compelling tale and thought-provoking narrative on virtual realities and simulations than "the matrix" its a miracle that this game even exists and currently distributed on store fronts, for a price like this, its worth every penny!
