The immersion failed me, the story felt disconnected from the game as if it's from different game. But the gameplay is alright I kinda able to follow along & not let it bother me, since it's linear anyway. Get it on sale & you'll get nothing to complain.

very fun, looks gorgeous for an older game, surprising combat depth and variety once you unlock the full kit. highly recommend for linear old school single player FPS fans

Overall, a pretty good package. To start, the game is a shooter with two weapon slots, an energy weapon and a ballistic weapon, these slots can be outfitted with different weapons (for a total of 12 options*) and changed on the fly which makes it easy to experiment and try to combo/alternate during fights. Albeit with a couple second delay in between switching no ability to select a weapon, instead having to roll through all of them until you get your choice, which is not that bad if you keep a small selection but that kinda defeats the above-mentioned benefit of the system. Graphics are solid even to this day which is a big plus. It has some good-looking moments. The environment and level design also shine, especially in-doors. I settled on a rather basic RPG/Shotgun & Energy Mortar set for my run and didn't have much issue with the difficulty on Hard. It's an aproachable title, though you do have to think your way around the arenas presented because the enemies do hit hard if you let them. The enemy variety is pretty much exhausted by the time you get to the half-point and it does feel like I fight the exact same bots I did last fight, every fight. There's no real variation in models for individual enemy types for most enemies which gets pretty stale. The game's gunplay is pretty good, though most of the larger enemies aren't responsive to your hits (in the sense that they don't seem to "hurt" until they are knocked down/dead), this can be fixed with an optional upgrade you can get. The introduction of a sword a couple levels in can provide a fun way to spice up the experience but being in melee range with most enemies is rather punishing if you don't time your dodges right. Mobility is good overall in the game, you can run, jump and dash. Surprisingly, no crouching which gets a bit annoying in some environmental situations. Sound design is pretty good though again, it does get rather repetitive by the time you finish the first half. The biggest complaint however would be the fact that this is simply one of the easiest games I played to optimize the fun away. Experiment, move around during fights, switch weapons, put some music and fight with the sword and you can have a real blast. The fact it comes for a very good price on sales is the cherry on top and makes it diving into its cyberpunk setting worth it. 7.5/10

Absolute gem of a game, an oldschool FPS shooter with excellent graphics, fantastic animations, great weapons. True cyberpunk climate. Demanding enemies with decent AI. Much recommended!

This review is purely from a gameplay standpoint, as the story is the exact same in both games (and barely even exists to begin with). You don't even need to understand the story to have a good time anyway. I own both the original version of Hard Reset as well as Redux, and it might as well be considered two different games, at least in my experience. Playing through Redux with all it's enhancements is like being able to turn off your brain and have a good time shooting and cutting through countless bad guys. It's fun to play when (and I'm drawing from my own experience here) you can go from slashing zombies with a katana, then immediately turning around and hitting a flying drone with a railgun, then blasting apart a charging gorilla robot with a machine gun. It's very fast paced with the introduction of endless sprint, directional dashes and an additional weapon (that being the aforementioned katana). Playing the original version requires more strategy and tactics. What CLN mode combos well with what NRG mode, and how knowing the different combos can take down certain enemies faster. You also can't sprint indefinitely or dash, and there's no katana. Redux allowed you to effectively stay distant OR get up close and personal, but the original forces you to keep your distance, which is admittedly limiting in combat If I had to analogize the experiences between the two games, Redux is a supercar and the original is a muscle car: both are great vehicles, but different in function and experience. In my personal opinion, if you don't own either version of the game, buy Redux. Then, if you want to experience a more challenging version of the game, buy the original.
