I want to say that I enjoy "Survivor-Likes" a bit too much. I have played almost every version of them. (atleast it feels like it) VS, HoT, Death Must Die, Deep Rock, Genesia, Army of Ruin and some more. Each 100 hours+. Makes me want to believe, I can see the good and the ugly in these games. Halls of Torment is in my opinion in the Top 3 of Survivor-Likes and even succeeds in almost every aspect of it's "father". One of the major flaws (imo) I experienced in these types of games, is the end game. What happens if you unlocked everything. Upgraded everything to the max. Usually these games lose themselves in senselessness. Halls of Torment has a very befitting name and for sure it reaches it's point of illogical endless progession too but they have found ways to make the gameplay, on the 1000x repeating maps, quite interesting. You have a good arrangement of characters, each (so they make it feel) with their handcrafted and thought-through designs. They feel very unique and you can experiment alot. On top of that add some Items, some of them are mandatory for specific builds but yet there's alot of freedom to experiment around because they managed to keep most of them very useful. That alone already sold me for most of the time I enjoyed the game. If one goes further they have added a cute endless mode. Cute because I personally love endless modes but this one didn't hit me as hard as some other games. You can pay gold to get random debuffs on your next endless run. Which I think can be alot of fun but I enjoyed their "Artifacts" far more. You can play the basic maps with a mutator but the good thing here is you can decide which ones and how many you take, though each artifact will buff enemies base-stats no matter which artifact you pick. (...and yourself by granting more xp.) That is in which I have lost myself, enjoying this game just the last few weeks. If you manage to debuff the hell out of your run and kill the bosses in the end you get a currency to endlessly upgrade your characters. Now the kicker: In other games you have 100 of the progression upgrade-thingies. You apply it to one character. Now you have 0 upgrade-thingies. Here you can upgrade them all simultaneously. Fcking broke my mind. First I resetted all the stats before applying it to a different character, because I was so used to games robbing your time and making you upgrade all characters each on their own. But in HoT even characters you "don't like" will become viable only by playing your favorite character. Halls of Torment. A big YES! Enjoy the suffering!

Shockingly good Survivors-like. It combines the Diablo style Paragon level number-go-up with gameplay like Vampire Survivors. There are unlocks hidden behind achievements, and after I finished all 500 I was itching for more content. Legitimately more satisfying to me than Diablo 4. Easy recommendation if you like ARPGs.

What Vampire Survivors is to Castlevania, Hall of Tormet is to Diablo. This alone makes HoT a proper spiritual successor to VS, since it doesn't try to copy and paste, but rather truly tries to re-imagine Diablo in a reverse-bullet hell format and succeeds. It feels fresh, sufficiently challenging, has it's little mysteries and quirks, and is overall a great experience. Would recommend.

I won't say that it dethrones Vampire Survivors as I think there are some things that still does better, but... This game absolutely adds to the genre well. The quests are different, and feel more directed. The manner that they're revealed is certainly clever (even if it's just flavor, since you complete them automatically, even if unrevealed), they definitely give you a focus for progression. The Diablo feel is something I scoffed at reading reviews, but I have been humbled - it's real, and it's brilliant. Career/roguelike progression is deeper than VS. While the secondary abilities are somewhat welcome, I do miss the overall weapon/ability selection of VS - this game does tighten that up though, and so far, I haven't found a broken build yet, so I have to play a bit better/smarter. Maybe that's a good thing... if I want to go full on blast mode, I can always fire up VS again. That the price point for this genre is as low as it is is amazing, so much value here. Welcome to the family, Hallos of Torment.

This game is simply amazing. The diabloish design paired with Vampire Survivor's gameplay is a really good match, it's fun, it's nervous, it's hard. One of the must fun meta progression I ever seen on this kind of game, not rellying on farming ressources but rather by achieving some quests (and some of them are really hard to do). And as the final quests are complex, the game remains a challenge even after 65h+ of play. The number of possible combinations (spells/equipment/potions/characters, etc.) makes every game different.
