I'd say pick it up on sale. Cool strategy and management elements and the ship debuffs make sense (bleed becomes hull breach, and the like), but it can get repetitive and the game sometimes has bugs.

I really enjoyed this game. The combat is very specific in how it works and you'll need to really wrap your head around the rock-paper-scissors elements, especially exploiting effects, to be effective. But the general plot is great, fantastic pixel art, really fun vibe.

Lighthearted parody of mostly Star Trek, which is fun. I bounced off of it getting a bit grindy, but if you like grinding JRPG style battles, with a lightweight base building component, this is a fun, silly one for you. This is apparently the less grindy updated version of the game. The original is under "Classic Edition" and I give it thumbs down.

The Basics -It's a fun little pixel art space RPG. -Game is centered around turn based ship combat and base management, with some turn based ground combat on the side. Base management is real time with a lot of pause and play. -Very simple and straightforward gameplay loop, though it can get very challenging at higher difficulties. -Crew members have branching levels and abilities, with 3 main classes and multiple 'subclasses.' Technically crew can do any tasks, but different crew excel at different jobs. The 3 main classes all have ship types, 2 types per tier. The Good: -Relatively simple, easy to play and understand -Humorous and interesting writing. I like the Yabblings in particular. -Good power curve and leveling design -Charming art design and variety, pixel art is easy on performance -Not bad writing for what it is, with a bunch of decisions along the way -A good but not overwhelming amount of tech and upgrades. The Bad: -A lot of snowballing, with the snowball going in either direction. If you are too slow to get your resources going, or if you lose too many resource stations to the aliens, you can be pretty screwed. -The story can drag a bit at times. The story is throttled by things like upgrades and leveling, so charging through it is potentially very dangerous. Taking your time is typically far safer. The Other -The game can be a bit unforgiving if you get your early game build wrong. Halcyon is mostly a fleet management game, and fleets need fuel. If you run out of fuel and don't have fuel supply lines, you're pretty screwed. However, fuel often becomes trivial in the late game. -The game has aliens, but you can't really recruit them or their ships except in special events. This was disappointing, as many of them are very cool with very cool ships. -Setting up delivery drones is a must (assuming you use the systems for resources). You can get away with manually ordering shuttles in the early game, but it doesn't scale. The game will be a lot of busywork if the player does not set drones up early on. It's a great game for what it is. I'd give it an 8/10. I can't speak for the DLC.

Halcyon 6 takes the base-building of XCom and pairs it with a combat system similar to early Final Fantasy titles. You recruit officers to captain your spaceships, send them on missions in fleets of up to three ships, and control them in both space and ground battles (though ground battles are unfortunately very few indeed). You upgrade your base's rooms to improve your ships and officers, and defend your base against the occasional alien attack. I keep coming back to Halcyon 6 every few years, because it's fun and low-key. The galaxy map moves in real-time (with frequent pausing to give you plenty of time to think), while battles are utterly turn-based. It's a great game to play when you just need a bit of a distraction from a crappy day, but still want something with enough depth to really sink your teeth into. On a personal note, I discovered Halcyon 6 when I was looking for something to scratch the Dwarf Fortress itch. It doesn't, but it's still a really fun game. You might think of it as a *very* stripped-down version of Stellaris, with none of the politics or civ-building aspects. To me, the games have a similar feel. Playing one makes me think of the other. I highly recommend Halcyon 6: Lightspeed Edition if you're a Star Trek fan, or just looking for a fun distraction on a rainy day. Replayability may be low, but not zero. I've personally never completed the game's story, but once I do I'll start playing on one difficulty above normal (*gasp!*).
