Haak is a fun to play Metroidvania that perhaps doesn’t entirely understand what makes a Metroidvania work. The game seems to think a modern Metroidvania should be a story driven linear platformer. There’s little room in either game to explore an unfamiliar world. Especially in “Haak”, you’re constantly having checkpoints or timed events thrown at you. At least so far, there hasn’t been many opportunities to just explore which the game is lacking thus far. Another thing I find annoying is having a npc pop up and constantly offer you ways to make the game easier. Yes, I don’t mind “accessibility” settings but the fact that I was reminded of this option so much seems to speak to the devs being insecure about the hardness of the game. If so maybe balancing it better would have been more helpful than adding an anime girl npc. But the game is really enjoyable to play, the controls are responsive and it feels and looks slick. I just think people looking for a Metroidvania will ultimately be disappointed. If the game changes radically, I’ll eat my own hat
Fun game but oh boy can it be frustrating. I'm used to metroidvanias locking areas behind new skills, this is the first time where a game went "ah, but you see, you have to UPGRADE your original whip skill and that will IMPROVE your hacking skill (which isn't apparent) and that slightly increased reach is all you needed to solve this puzzle". I spent ages running around the map looking for a new skill that wasn't even needed.........
This is a fantastic Metroidvania. The amount of mobility Haak gets during his journey, through various skills, is truly amazing. Extremely responsive controls makes it a joy to play. Now, I really like exploration in my Metroidvanias, but I must say, Haak has some levels that seem to go on, and on, and on... It can get daunting after awhile. And there are LOTS of secret areas, doors, crawlspaces, chimneys, manholes, etc... ;) When I bought this game it was on sale for like $5 AUD. Even at a slightly higher price I would definitely recommend this beautiful game. Graphics, cut scenes and music are all amazing as well. Cool game.
It has been a long time since I got completely captured by a game. Boot it after dinner, next time I looked at my phone it was 1am. Besides all the excellence in the Metroidvania game design, I think what the game did really well is the balance between "it is difficult" but "I can do it". The difficulty rise gradually but everytime you get challenged, it felt fair. This kept me exploring, solving puzzles and wait for the next one. It has really unique humor, especially if you understamd Chinese, even better if you grow up in China. The art style, the small pieces of reading materials are really stylish and can only be fully appreciated if you are familiar with the 70s and the 80s time in China. The story telling is also quite interesting, reminds me of Dark Souls. However I think I missed the entire quest line of the guitar girl and not sure if anything will happen there.... This is a great hidden gem of Metroidvania game, and a really good one. A great "holiday game" if you like.
