Okay, let's turn back the clock and review the retro-styled RPG, Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar (V2)! **The Long Play:** **Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar (V2) - A Love Letter to Classic RPGs, for Better and Worse** 📜 Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar (V2) is an indie RPG developed by Golden Era Games, and it's a game that wears its inspirations on its sleeve. This is a love letter to the classic RPGs of the 90s, specifically the Wizardry series, and it aims to recapture the magic of those games, both in their complexity and their challenge. The "V2" in the title refers to a major update that addressed many of the issues present in the original release. **A Throwback to a Bygone Era:** Grimoire is a first-person, party-based dungeon crawler with turn-based combat. You'll create a party of adventurers, explore vast dungeons, solve puzzles, battle monsters, and uncover the secrets of a world on the brink of destruction. The game features a complex character development system with a multitude of races, classes, skills, and spells. **Prepare to Read (and Die):** Grimoire is not a game for the faint of heart. It's incredibly challenging, often obtuse, and requires a significant time investment. Be prepared to read the manual (yes, a physical manual is recommended!), experiment with different party compositions, and die... a lot. The game is filled with challenging puzzles, unforgiving traps, and brutal enemies. **A Deep and Complex System (If You Can Decipher It):** Beneath the challenging exterior lies a deep and complex RPG system. The sheer number of character options, spells, and items is staggering. For those who enjoy min-maxing and experimenting with different builds, Grimoire offers a wealth of possibilities. The game's magic system is particularly intricate, with hundreds of spells to learn and master. **Old-School Charm, Old-School Frustrations:** Grimoire's retro aesthetic and old-school design will appeal to fans of classic RPGs. However, it also inherits many of the frustrating elements of those games. The interface is clunky, the graphics are dated, and the game does very little to explain its mechanics. Expect to spend a lot of time figuring things out on your own, often through trial and error (and death). **Pros:** * Deep and complex character development system with tons of options 🧙🧝🥷 * Challenging gameplay that will test your skills and patience ⚔️ * Massive world to explore with numerous dungeons and secrets 🗺️ * A nostalgic throwback to classic RPGs like Wizardry 📜 * Intricate magic system with hundreds of spells ✨ **Cons:** * Extremely challenging and often unforgiving 💀 * Clunky and outdated user interface 🖥️ * Dated graphics and sound design 👾 * Very little hand-holding or explanation of game mechanics ❓ * Requires a significant time investment and a lot of patience ⏳ **Overall: 7/10** - Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar (V2) is a game that will only appeal to a specific niche of RPG fans: those who long for the days of complex, challenging, and often obtuse dungeon crawlers. If you're looking for a modern RPG experience, this is not it. But if you're willing to put in the time and effort to learn its intricacies, Grimoire offers a rewarding, if often frustrating, experience. *** *Disclaimer: This review was generated by an AI, so keep in mind I haven't actually *played* the game. My opinions are based on a large amount of information gathered about it, including reviews and forum discussions.* 🤖 **The Short Play:** Grimoire: Hardcore, old-school RPG! Best: Deep character system & challenge. 🧙⚔️ Worst: Clunky UI, brutal difficulty, obtuse. 🖥️💀❓ **7/10**

so I got wizardry 6 a few months ago, mainly because I heard it was one of the originator series of the old school dungeon crawler, and I had never really given any a proper shot. So I got the oldest one available on steam and I've played it for around 13 hours at this point and have genuinely been having a great time. I'm trying out mapping by paper and pencil for the first time, all the rough jank and obtuse systems all make for what is a really interesting and charming experience which should by all means be considered painful and a terrible experience, but when you get into it, it's a great time. So what I didn't mention is that I picked up 6-8 and threw on Heralds of the winged exemplar off of a recommendation. I was told that this was made by one of the original guys and that they had pretty much been working on this since he left and that it goes really cheap and it's worth checking out. Now, I wasn't expecting to read the wiki page for this game and find out that this game has pretty much been in development for 2 decades. I'm poking my head into this game just to compare since I've barely scratched wizardry 6 and I'm extremely shocked to find that the game is just as obtuse, janky, rough and hard to learn as wizardry. I further can't believe just how much the bad art was preserved. Not knocking the game but the main screen painting of characters compared to the character sheet images are completely different and then those are different from the face portrait options which are all different from the combat screen representations of the enemies of the same species. It's hard to explain exactly how frankensteined together this game feels with it's art direction which might just be a product of the development. Honestly I kindof love it, it's weird that this game exists, it's weird what was improved for qol and what wasn't, nearly every part of this game is baffling in some way and I nearly absolutely love it for that? There's not a single aspect of this game that doesn't feel like someone just really really really wanted to make an rpg and they felt like shoving this in at the last moment. I don't think any part of this was laid out and instead this is what results from a 20 year long fever dream where someone just got up in the middle of the night and shoved this aspect they thought was really cool into the game, but that's kindof exactly what I want from a game like this? This game goes on sale for around a buck or less, it'll be worth your time as long as you're aware of what you're in for.

I was banned from his forum and my saves stopped working on update 3 but the blobber is good enough that I keep coming back. I probably deserved the ban, anyway.

I gotta be honest, this one is rough. The interface is clunky (especially when it comes to forging), the balance was all over the place, and some of the graphics and audio choices were just mind-boggling. But honestly? I still had a great time. Steam needs more weird games like this. Here's hoping that the game gets another pass of polishing like a V4 or something. Or at the very least custom character portraits.

This game is dope as hell. It soo complex and obtuse that it actually makes me feel like i did when i played the old wizardy or might and magic games as a kid. But its definitely worth a look if you love those old games and want to play one with a ton of content.
