Amazing game with a very good story. Replayed it again after many years and still captivating.

Gray Matter is a point-and-click adventure that wears its classical roots proudly, delivering an experience steeped in atmosphere, mystery and cerebral puzzles. Written by Jane Jensen, of Gabriel Knight fame, it carries that same blend of gothic intrigue and human drama, though with a more subdued, introspective tone. You play as Samantha Everett, a street magician whose sharp wit and resourcefulness guide you through a story tinged with psychological tension and a hint of the supernatural. Her reluctant partnership with the enigmatic Dr. David Styles - an eccentric neurobiologist haunted by tragedy - provides the backbone of the narrative. The interplay between illusion and science, perception and reality, elevates the game above mere puzzle-solving, giving it a thematic richness that lingers. Visually, Gray Matter inhabits a space between charm and constraint. The backgrounds are detailed, atmospheric and evocative of Oxford’s winding streets and shadowed interiors, but the character animations and cutscenes often betray the game’s limited budget. The uneven presentation never quite erases its allure, yet it occasionally pulls you out of the immersion. The puzzles themselves are largely well constructed, integrating sleight of hand, logic and observational challenges that feel organic to the narrative. There are, however, moments of awkward design - where solutions feel obtuse or progress depends on pixel hunting - that recall the less forgiving habits of the genre’s past. Patience is rewarded, but sometimes strained. Where Gray Matter succeeds most is in tone: it is atmospheric, intelligent and quietly haunting. It’s not flawless (the pacing can drag, the technical polish is inconsistent) but it offers a narrative and mood that few modern adventures replicate. For players longing for the days when adventure games sought to provoke thought and evoke emotion, Gray Matter is a flawed but fascinating gem.

A hidden gem for sure. Bought years ago but played lately. It's a great adventure. Great story, characters and atmosphere. After you get introduced to characters chapter after chapter you build a connection. Controls are clunky but space bar showing interaction points help. For technical issues with modern systems please check guides here. Also some resolutions make inventory unusable. Wish they make more adventures games like this. Jane Jensen is a master story teller.

I'm a veteran of point-and-click adventure games, and this is one of the best I've played. What a hidden gem. Beautiful art, great soundtrack, fantastic characters and great atmosphere as you wanted the streets of Oxford and the surrounding colleges. The lack of commercial success means yet another great adventure game won't get the recognition it deserves, consequently robbing us of a sequel.
