This game is like 70% genuinely fun and engaging platforming and then 30% sloppy and infuriating design. I kinda wish I could leave a neutral review, but since I can't I'll make this one positive because in the grand scheme of things I still think this is a good game, even if it sometimes drove me to absolute heights of anger. I cannot count the times I fell through an enemy straight into spikes because I slammed one pixel too far to the left or to the right, the enemy hitboxes are so much smaller than their sprites and it doesn't feel fair at all. Another one is how many times the main character dodged a collectible mid-air because I presses an arrow key for 0.01 seconds too long, the way the character controls mid-air is so exaggerated it becomes a herculean task to right your path after nudging him even slightly to the left or to the right. While on the topic of movement: the way the character picks up speed doesn't feel that satisfying, it feels like his top running speed is barely faster than the regular walk. Another additional point: the way the character sticks to walls even while on the ground can become quite annoying. The worst thing about this game however (in my opinion) are the "accessibility" features. They're in fact not accessibility features at all, but in fact simple cheats to gain infinite HP or infinite jumps. What is the point of even playing the game at that point? It would essentially just become a walking simulator with substantially less plot than other games of that genre. The reason why this is the worst thing about this game despite being entirely optional is because it feels like a bandaid on areas of bad design, like the Dev saying "You can't make that pixel perfect jump? Just get an infinite amount of them, problem solved". Now, granted there aren't many jumps like that in the game, but off the top of my head I can think of at least two which were really needlessly hard. That being said there are also just a lot of levels or sections of levels which felt infuriating in how they were put together, almost every stage from the lava-zone or whatever it was called could be in this category tbh. Situations in which you can't do anything to prevent yourself from getting hit are also surprisingly common, through not as much and definetely more noticable in the bonus levels. It also doesn't help that the psychological impact of those cheats being built into the game only makes the frustrating sections even more frustrating. In the back of my mind I knew there's an easy way to circumvent all that and just get it over with, but in reality I also knew that if I'd use those cheats it would make the victory feel hollow and subsequently make it feel like admitting defeat, plus like a waste of all the time I've already put into trying to beat a section/level legitimately, so I'd grit my teeth and try to ignore those options as best as I could. Anyway, point is: I would've much preferred if certain design changes were implemented, like making the enemy hitboxes actually match their sprites (or perhaps extending Pablo's attack hitbox, idk which would be best) changing the way the character controls to be less finicky and perhaps even adding one or two checkpoints in certain stages before particular sections, rather than slapping a big ole "free win" button in the menu. Lastly, like I already mentioned, the story is pretty weak. I wasn't expecting much out of it in the first place since this is a game with clear focus on gameplay over story, and I was fine with that. However even with my low expectations I still managed to be mildly disappointed by how the ending played out. Nul's choice to save the world comes literally out of nowhere. He literally just gets beaten in a fight and then decides on a whim "Yeah, I think I'll sacrifice myself for this world and people I hated just 5 seconds prior". Like??? And also don't even get me started on how the moment he saw his world, which was his entire motivation throughout the game he was like "Huh... wow this looks actually really lame". What?? How can you judge it, you literally haven't even been to it yet, for all you know it just looks drab because of the weather but is actually a great place. And you expect me to believe him realizing his world sucks in those 5 seconds would be enough of a motivation to sacrifice himself for people he actively hated just a moment earlier? Come on. Also Toni and Pablo have about as much chemistry as wet cardboard. I do not understand what they see in each other at all, throughout the game it honestly felt like they barely even knew each other. As for the things I actally enjoyed: - The vast majority of stages is actually both decently challenging while still being fun - The artstyle is great, I really love it - The music is also great, though some tracks can become a bit repetitive they never become unenjoyable But yeah, despite this list being significantly shorter, I would've felt bad giving a negative review considering I did enjoy most of the game, even if the bad parts were REALLY bad.
