A really good game from back in the "in-between" days after the classic SNES pixel art masterpieces and before the more modern 3D JRPG's. I guess this one reminded me the most of the Trails in the Sky games, not only because we get the classic boy and girl main characters pairing in Justin and Sue, albeit they're a bit younger than Estelle and joshua and other duos they inspired or inspired them in turn, but also because the visual style and the world also feels reminiscent of Liberl in those early Trails games. But that's not to say that this isn't its own thing, given that the tone is very different and the game-play is also more Chrono Trigger-esque than Trails-style. I was a bit surprised by how much story they cram into each of the game's segment as opposed to having you grind and fight all the time, as well as by how charming the characters' relationships are since early on in the game, not only between Justin and Sue themselves, but the extended cast, like Sue's aunt and uncle or Justin's mom, or the later inclusion of extra party members like Feena who initially seems to be set up to fill a big sister role like Schera does in Trails in the Sky, but then in a welcome change of pace, the dynamics between her and the main duo go a different way. My only complaint so far is that I would've liked a better mini-map in order to navigate dungeons and cities because they look kind of samey and it's easy to get lost even with the compass if you're accustomed to more traditional navigation of the style you see in other JRPG's. I initially had some trouble running it on my Steam Deck and it kept crashing before even starting the game, but it's a well-documented issue and I was able to easily fix it in a couple of minutes just by googling how to do it and adjusting the Proton tool required, and haven't had any issues since then.

a REALLY good RPG with one of my favourite combat systems and a lot of soul, This game made me start playing more obscure games I thought looked interesting rather than games I've seen friends or other people talk about, One of the best choices I've made.

This game honestly surprised me. It looked kind of childish but I gave it a try anyway and I'm glad I did. It might acutally be childish but in the sense of the pure and naive adventure spirit of a young boy. I think that's how I would describe this game. It's a light hearted adventure most of the time but also gets very serious when it needs to be. It's just a fun ride. The combat system feels very basic at first but because of how they applied the ATB system, it becomes very strategic. There is nothing more satisfying then completely canceling your opponents turn. You also can't just spam multi target hits as you like since most moves have a certain range, so you have to think about where to place your attacks. It's very grindy. But this is one of the very rare games in which grinding is super fun. Everyone who loves tur-based JRPGs should at least give it a try. I give it a 8.5/10.
