April 2025
(Note: I played the free edition for about 135 hours before buying the full game.) Let me start by saying that I blow chunks at fighting games. Its a genre I've never been able to get into. I've always liked Smash Bros. (I'm still not amazing at it by any means) but that's about it. But I loved Granblue Fantasy: Relink (Relink was my first Granblue game) and I saw that this game had a free version so i figured that there would be no harm in at least trying it out. At first I was going to just play this game for maybe a few hours just so I could say I tried it....... I then proceeded to play the free version for 135 hours and now I bought the full game when it went on sale. While I'm still not good at this game by any means, I'm still having a lot of fun with it and will absolutely keep playing it for the long term. I appreciate this games attempt to be more accessible to newcomers of the genre; with some practice I feel like I can actually control the game, and I like the option to turn the technical commands on or off (maybe when I feel more comfortable with the game I'll turn on the technical commands). I also like that there's a variety of extra content that isn't just fighting. there's things like the story mode, grand bruise legends (which is a Mario Party/Fall Guys like mode that's goofy and casual), a survival rougelite mode that was just added in the 2.0 update, and other mini games in the open lobby online mode; it all helps keep the game feeling fresh and makes the game fun to just hang out in. I can't say anything about the balance of the game since I'm not an expert (what even is a 66L, why not just call it dash attack), but if recent patch notes are anything to go by, Arc System Works is listening and making attempts at balancing. Most of the DLC is just cosmetic stuff (the only exception being the character passes of course) so if they seem expensive, they can be safely ignored. So if your still on the fence about this game, try the free edition; its one of the best free things I've seen in a long time. I can safely say as someone who is usually not into fighting games, this is the most fun I've had with a fighting game since Smash Bros. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go play some more; I have to make sure I'm a worthy vassal for Percival, and I need to make sure Nier is doing okay. Update: Thanks everyone for the support. I didn't think this many people would see my review. I'd like to take the opportunity to say a few more things. Firstly, the free version is now including DLC characters in its rotation. That's pretty cool. Secondly, as far as measuring the player base goes, don't take Steam Charts to literally, there are a few more factors to consider. One, all players of the free version still play with everyone else. Two, there's crossplay with the PS4 and PS5 versions. Thirdly, the open lobbies are region free. All of this helps ensure you can find people at anytime of the day. Thirdly, this game does do battle pass content from time to time, but they are starting to reintroduce old rewards either as in game unlocks or paid DLC. Speaking of which I know the steam store page can be intimidating with its total price of DLC; just remember some of it is bundles and is not actually what everything would cost, just make sure to do some research before buying any of it. Well if I think of anything else I might add it later. Thanks again everyone.

Defense is insanely strong in this fighting game. Almost none of the characters are able to run true mixes. Everything is fuzziable. You need to rely on solid footsies and unreactable full screen stuff to kill oponnent. It's very neutral heavy. But has stupid neutral tools, like 66L and some other stuff various characters have. Also. Even though, it's neutral heavy, it's very modern in a sense of damage dealt. It's NOT a low damage game. You will eat 60% lifebar combos. If you desire to start, I will recommend to learn combos that start of your neutral pokes. And combos that start from 66L. And combos that start from 2H. And if you are new... Please. Block on wakeup. Don't be silly.

I'll be honest, after playing this game for a full year, GBVSR is sick. I can't tell how many things GBVSR does well compared to other fighting games of this era and yet, it's not as popular despite all the good things we have in this ! It really feels like a polished game overall. - Menus are working well and everything is accessible easily without having to search for decades. - Good online, rollback, matchmaking, lobbies, no issue ! (It's almost fun to just walk around and talk with people in the lobby) - Ranked is also working well. (although it has a lot of wifi warriors and AFK players in lower ranks.) - Lots of different modes outside of online battles. (story, arcade, figure, Grandbruise although there is not enough mini games and not many people to play with, robomi and we are getting survival mode in 2.0 ver !) - Many Characters, all created with lots of love to the source material. (Vikala even has a JustinWong meme reference) Each character has a lot of different color and weapon skins. - Balancing is overall pretty great ! We had some busted characters and still have 66L spam but the devs are listening and after playing this game for a full year, I think it was great compared to other games. (and also the fact fighting games are HARD to make and balance.) - Training mode has a lot of options although I would add a frame meter just like SF6 does. (a mod exist for that at least) - Lots of different input options and macros available to play exactly like you want ! - A generous FREE version of the game is available and simple controls makes the game easy to access, they are well implemented and don't feel clunky or limited like other fighting games. I introduced so many friends to fighting games thanks to this game. (some of them still play to this day !) - You may have heard fighting games have DLC and battle pass issues, but GBVSR let's you buy the DLCs with the in game money ! You need to grind a bit but it won't take you months and months to get what you want. (If you want every DLC though... Good luck lol.) For Battle Passes, the content is overall great for those who want them, it's completely optional and the free version is also cool. I'm not really the type of player who will buy the BPs but none of them made me feel like it was a scam and they now sell you the content of older BPs as DLC if you missed one of them. Overall, I really like this game because it's one of the rare ones where I just like to hang out in it, play a couple of games, have fun with Grandbruise for a little break and tchat with others. I traveled in tourneys for this game and I lived so many great things because of it. The devs are communicating well with the players and creates really fun things for us. (See their April Fools Joke as a reference, it was a fun thing !) It's useless but they did it anyway, It just feels like they also have fun creating the game and it's just so cool. We will even get Pop Team Epic crossover for lobby avatars ! Why ? Don't know but it's amusing ! Thanks for all the hard work you have done GBVSR Team, Arcsys and Cygames. I'm genuinely happy with all the content you did and hope the season 2 will be just as fun and exciting as the first one. Thank you so much.

Incredibly underrated, and the most fun I've ever had with a fighting game. Finally, a fighting game that actually wants you to learn how to play fighting games. Hands down the best tutorial/training/character breakdown/matchup practice/sample combo systems in the genre. You can do all of those things from one mode and switch between them in the pause menu with no loading screens. Everything you need to know about the game is actually included in the game somewhere. They even advertise the community Discord (full of really nice people too) if you want some 1-1 practice with a sparring buddy. The modern (simple input) special move system isn't just 'slapped on' to get people to try the game. You can use a modern control scheme without being locked out of certain moves or mechanics. The UI is perfect. All of the info about the fight is at the top of the screen where it belongs, and is easily readable. You can unlock pretty much everything, including DLC characters and special costumes just by playing the game. If you want a character from a DLC pack you can just buy them with ingame currency or real money without getting the whole pack. There's a whole minigame series outside of the fighting game part that's pretty fun too. Kinda feels like Mario Party/Fall Guys. You can unlock ingame currency and other stuff too, but it's mostly there as a silly side-attraction. All in all, I can't recommend this game enough. I only wish more people knew about it.

In this game, you can 2B 2B. What more do you need. I am extremely biased, I already liked the original GBVS, but here's the deal: - There's the free to play version. It gives you a good idea of the online, it has crossplay too. - There's the original GBVS for the story mode, and it has been frequently discounted, deeply discounted. - It's really easy to find a match online, even now. Don't get fooled by the Steam numbers, the game has crossplay. Even half a year later. Even when we were told that the game would not survive Tekken 8 and UNI2. This game is surprisingly alive.
