Gothic 2 has rightfully earned its place as one of the best RPGs in history, standing out among other games in the genre. Is this the best part of the installment? Definitely not, but it still maintains a solid level of a good RPG. From the very first moments, as I stepped into the shoes of the nameless hero, I was drawn into the fascinating world of Khorinis, where the story, characters, and rich details create an unforgettable atmosphere. However, Gothic 2 is not just about the story and the living world ā€“ itā€™s also a challenge. The combat system, while frustrating and unintuitive at first, provides a bit of satisfaction as you get the hang of it, but still feels pretty crappy overall. This aspect may discourage newcomers, especially those used to more accessible mechanics in newer games. Still, itā€™s worth giving the game a chance because the reward for patience is great. With continuous support from fans who regularly create new mods, Gothic 2 continues to impress. Whether you're returning after many years or discovering this world for the first time, there's always something new to explore ā€“ though its roughness may not appeal to everyone.

I first played this game when I was about 12 years old. I can still play it now and still have an amazing time. I've played Gothic 2 so many times that I know the location of every NPC, enemy and even a specific herb. I just love this game.

For a modern player who has arrived here after randomly encountering glowing praise for this game on the internet (which still persists in certain corners of the web 20+ years later), starting Gothic 2 is likely to be a confusing and frustrating outing. Wtf is this ancient, sadistic game design? Why does my character suck at absolutely everything? When does it get good, and is it actually possible to git gud here? Was this writing even intended to sound professional? Are these low-poly assets with washed-out colors supposed to form a compelling fantasy world? But if thereā€™s one old janky RPG youā€™re willing to stick with, Iā€™d highly recommend to choose Gothic 2, because what you may find on the other side is one of the most memorable and unique experiences in the genreā€™s history. This game was Skyrim and Dark Souls combined before both even existed: an immersive sim where cooking meat over a campfire, watching the farmersā€™ daily routine or picking the lock of a well-hidden treasure chest feel like the main dish, and also an unforgiving action/RPG with no hand-holding where everything means danger and survival is entirely your ownā€™s problem. Yet at the same time, it was a different, deeper kind of an open-world game; the kind thatā€™s still so hard to come by today. Every quest, every side activity, every hidden cave felt hand-crafted and different here. It combined mechanics in smart ways, like allowing both for "RPG solutions" (e.g. coax a guard) and "platforming solutions" (e.g. find a route from above through the rooftops). It made the world alive like no average copy-pasted, progress-bars-filling modern title could. And itā€™s not as if the questions from above get satisfying answers, revealing some sort of a perfect game design plan; when allā€™s said and done, itā€™s still a rather clunky RPG. Itā€™s more like, even compared to other good Piranha Bytes efforts, everything just works here. Was it really necessary to make the mage route so painfully tough, with you spending the entire first half waiting for the good spells while being afraid of every goblin? Probably not, but they did, and once you stand there at the end after clearing the entire field of high-level orcs with a single fire rain cast, the contrast is staggering, and the feeling of a hard-earned reward is unparalleled. Without a doubt, Gothic 2 is a product of its time. But even with nostalgia goggles off, those just might have been the times worth revisiting.

I played this game for the first time a year ago, 20 years after it's release, and it changed my view on video games all together... Especially action RPGs. Gothic 2 has everything! The best combat mechanics out there, the most immersive world without quest markers (the world is so well thought out, that you don't have to follow a yellow "!" marker at any point! You can actually think for yourself ), most likable NPCs, the best level up system, the best factions, the best enemies, and fights in general; there are no annoying creatures to fight only to make it through to the next area. It has the best armor and weapon system I've seen, the best writing that doesn't make you want to skip dialogue all the time, it has the best world design that clearly influenced the highly praised Dark Souls. Even with Gothic's "dated" graphics the world is so unique and believable that you just want to stay in to pick that one last herb, to talk to that one last NPC, or to reach that one last "safe point" where you can sleep and fill up your health. Gothic 2 is so good that it actually make's me angry for wasting time with modern action RPGs. All the nonsense quests and dungeon diving, all the random chests and pointless treasure hunts, and the damn quest marker hunting I did in Skyrim and Witcher 3... If I only could have that wasted time back. Gothic 2 is a perfect game in its design, and with mods it can be made into an even perfecter game. 10/10
