First Time Playing Gothic Oh boy, where should I even start. I had never played Gothic before in my life. I had heard about it for years, seen people praise it like crazy, but I was always unsure if it was for me. Not scared, just hesitant. I didn’t really understand why people loved it so much. So I went in completely blind. No guides. Barely any Google. If I got stuck, I tried to read quests, backtrack, and actually think instead of looking things up. That alone made the experience way more immersive. The Early Game Pain This game does not hold your hand. At all. The start is brutal. I almost quit three times. Not joking. You go somewhere you’re not supposed to? You get punched. You fight too many enemies? You get punched. You look at the world wrong? You get punched. It honestly feels like a Dark Souls game with tank controls, and the game goes full raw butt ♥♥♥♥ on you early on. The game goes deep in your ass wiggling around like crazy. Important note: keep going. This pain is intentional. Backtracking is also a big thing here. A LOT of backtracking. I’ve played older games before, but not like this. It confused me at first, but it also made the world feel real. You learn paths. You learn danger zones. You learn when to run. The Turning Point Then something happened. After around five hours, I opened a chest and found a new sword. A real upgrade. Suddenly enemies that took five hits died in two. That moment changed everything. That was when I stopped thinking about quitting. The progression in this game is insane. Every upgrade matters. New weapon? You feel it. New armor? You feel it. More strength? You feel like a god. Progression and Power Nothing beats the feeling of growth in Gothic 1. Early game you run from wolves. Later on, you see one and think, “Let’s take a detour and ♥♥♥♥ him up.” One hit. Dead. That feeling is unmatched. Money is also painful early on. Every ore matters. Then later? You’re swimming in it. I ended the game with over 15k ore, and it felt incredible. This is how progression should feel. Slow. Painful. Then rewarding as hell. World and Tone The world is S-tier. One of the best RPG worlds I’ve experienced. It feels harsh, dirty, and alive. NPCs feel like real people with their own rules, not quest dispensers. At one point I honestly thought, “Where are all the women?” And then… yeah. I found one after reaching the inner castle. If this game came out today, it would probably get cancelled instantly. But honestly? I love it. The edgy tone, the weirdness, the unapologetic design. It made me laugh more than once. You hear the same lines constantly while walking around camps, and somehow it just adds to the charm. Freedom and Consequences I love how much freedom the game gives you. You can kill a lot of NPCs. The world doesn’t revolve around protecting you from your own decisions. It lets you mess up, learn, and deal with it. And yeah, ♥♥♥♥ Gomez. I killed him as soon as I got the teleport spell to the Fire Mages. He’s dead. So is basically everyone else there. No regrets. Conclusion Gothic 1 is rough. It’s old. It’s clunky. It will absolutely destroy you in the beginning. But if you stick with it, it rewards you harder than most modern RPGs ever do. The leveling, exploration, progression, and world-building are all top tier. Maybe not top 10 of all time for me, but now I finally understand why people love this game so much. Just be ready. The game will butt ♥♥♥♥ you at the start. If you can handle that, you’re in for something special. EDIT: Oh yeah I almost forgot. HERE I COME GOTHIC 2!

It has only recently come to my attention that some madman, a Russian modder independent from both Piranha Bytes and THQ Nordic, has been working behind the scenes to port the entirety of Gothic in Unreal Engine 5, motivated solely by mental illness and love for their favourite prison sim. This one-man remaster is available for no additional fee through the Betas tab, accessed by right-clicking the game in your library and selecting "Properties". It features a number of changes the modern gamer is sure to appreciate, such as: - Slightly prettier graphics; - Smoother animations; - A notable absence of bugs; - Physics that make sense (most of the time); - Proper mouse support; - A completely reworked UI; - Questionable localization choices. And to top it all off, more accessibility settings you can shake a pickaxe at. It's truly impressive work, and the one responsible for it deserves my praise. Really, they've done more in a few years for this series than all the developers and publishers have in its lifetime. All this to say: if you were ever interested in experiencing the magic of the colony for yourself, but were put off by the utterly Mesozoic control scheme and/or installation process, well, you no longer have an excuse.

I'm a huge fan of RPGs and heard good things about the Gothic series and the way it inspired the genre. The story, side quests, and dialogues are very unique and humorous. Gameplay and graphics can feel old at times, but they can become decent after installing various mods that can also ease up the tediousness of some actions. I enjoyed the different factions, armors and locations when roaming the game world and particularly the way you become more skilled as the game progresses. Gothic still feels very good in 2025. I'm glad I finally experienced it!

Turns out what they say is true: this is a great rpg. Very atmospheric, with an amazing open world (small but well designed) and many impressive systems like NPC schedules that work towards immersion. Progression from nobody to a powerful player is very satisfying and there is some non-linearity because of the vying factions. The story and setting are so good that I prefer Gothic 1 to its sequel, even though Gothic 2 is bigger and more fleshed out. Control scheme is somewhat unconventional, but not frustrating. I got used to it quickly and fought enemies with no problems.
