Golden Krone Hotel is a game that reminds us that sometimes the most memorable journeys are the ones where we are not entirely sure what is happening, where we are going, or whether the person standing next to us is actually someone we should be talking to. There is something wonderfully mysterious about this hotel. You arrive, you explore, you observe, you make decisions, and slowly you begin to understand that the ordinary appearance of the place is perhaps not quite as ordinary as it first seemed. Every corridor feels like it could lead somewhere interesting, and every room carries the possibility of another small discovery. What I particularly appreciate is the atmosphere. Golden Krone Hotel does not need to constantly shout at the player that something important is happening. It creates a quieter kind of tension, the feeling that there is always something just slightly beyond your understanding. You continue exploring not because the game promises you an enormous reward, but because you simply want to know what is behind the next door. And this is where the game succeeds. There is a certain charm in its simplicity. The experience never feels like it is trying too hard to impress you with endless systems and unnecessary complexity. Instead, it focuses on creating a coherent little world and allowing the player to spend some time inside it. Sometimes that is exactly what a game needs. The traditional roguelike structure also gives the experience a pleasant sense of impermanence. Each attempt is another opportunity to understand the hotel a little better, make a slightly different decision, and perhaps discover something that was invisible before. Failure becomes part of the process rather than simply an ending. You lose, you think about what happened, you return, and you try again. And eventually you begin to realize that the real progress was not necessarily measured by how far you managed to get, but by how much you now understand. Golden Krone Hotel may not be the loudest or most complicated game in the genre, but it has its own personality, and personality is something that is increasingly valuable. It is a small journey through a strange place. It is a game about curiosity. It is a game about paying attention. And, most importantly, it is a game that understands that sometimes a hotel is not merely a hotel. Recommended for anyone who enjoys traditional roguelikes, unusual settings, exploration, and games that are willing to let the player discover their own reasons to keep opening the next door.
The worst hotel experience ever. First, when arriving, there is no lobby, I couldn't check in. After wandering for a while I was attacked by a pale man who bursted into flames after stepping into sunlight. There are wild animals roaming the halls, and the only normal looking people I've met were smelly mercenary types carrying weapons and mumbling under their breath. There is no elevator, I had to crawl up the stairs again and again. At some point I felt lightheaded and blacked out. After coming back to my senses my nails were ruined and I felt the taste of blood in my mouth. The only good parts of this establishment were food (mostly included curry and ale) and the music played from some hidden speakers. Overall I rate my experience 2/10, I would never come back but... It feels like I must... Again... And again...
Quite simple and lean roguelike, pretty easy (at least on normal) but still requires careful play, mechanics are reduced to its essentials, each run is short and can be completed in 2 hours or less. Based on those characteristics I didn't think I would enjoy it much, but the short runs won me over and I'm having fun trying out different classes, it's a great roguelike to pass time when you're not in the mood to jump into something more complex or that demands more time. Quite enjoyable soundtrack too.
If you have an interest in traditional roguelikes I couldn't think of a better place to start. Some elements are simplified but there is still enough crunchy depth here to get your teeth into and most importantly it plays beautifully. Once you've mastered this; check out Infra Arcana, Sil Q and ToME.
