This game honestly defined roguelikes for me. While the combat may feel clunky to some, to me it feels precise and calculable. I love the items and the weapon upgrades, and the simplicity of the visuals just feels right. I'll never love another roguelike the way that I loved Gloom.

I give this game a rank C (60-65%) Okay game - not bad but you can skip it or try on sale. See my profile for more details about my reviews. I give Gloom about 61% in rating. Now I am bit late to this game obviously, when it came out like 7 years ago. Maybe when it came out it had a bigger reach and meaning, as much as Salt and Sanctuary (which I still have to do). Would it have changed my judgment? Hard to tell, especially since I finished the whole Dark Souls trilogy this past year. I thought the game was not great for the first 10 minutes, but after one hour I realized there was more to it. Basically Gloom is a very eerie, indie, 2D take on the Souls genre, mixed with some elements of rogue likes. The souls like recipe is here, with stamina, roll, tough fights, dark atmosphere. The rogue elements are also here, however, it is a one time trip (perma death if that talks to you). If you lose, you restart from scratch, everything, as there is no save point, 1990s style. However, you keep the (few) amount of tokens you might have found (usually a couple), which allow you to get a little boost at the start of your next run. But that's it. And that is not much! It is quite decent despite (because?) all that. The dialogues with the NPCs change/vary each new run, the gameplay is smooth (albeit a bit light), the art is pretty while a bit clumsy/indie, all the items make the runs somewhat varied. Yet overall the experience gets very repetitive and disheartening when, like me, you don't have much time. I almost hesitated giving Gloom around 58% in rating, but I see all the efforts in the gameplay, that is why I still give it a C. If you want a little indie game in that genre, this one is very well made and should make you try and try again for a while. Me, I have too many other games that much better so I can sacrifice the time to dig deeper, but maybe you will? It's a hard but rewarding game. You get better by getting familiar with the items (relics) and figuring out the movesets of the enemies. The bosses are extremely well made and fair. If you like subtle story telling and minimal tutorials where you piece things together each playthrough, then you'll probably like this game. Oh and the biggest advice that I can give is don't dismiss the gun just because the first one sucks. Try different guns/upgrades/items. This isn't like Bloodborne where your gun is just an afterthought. Your gun can be your main weapon on certain runs.
