A beautiful puzzle game with a stained-glass aesthetic. The fantastical art captivates with its stunning visuals and unique charm.

Second installment of Onyx Lute, “a tiny game development team”, as they describe themselves, Glass Masquerade 2: Illusions successfully brings a worthy successor to the jigsaw puzzle genre. Instead of having a standard rectangular outside border, like in physical boxed jigsaw puzzles, the player has to assembly an art deco stained glass window, compiled out of non-conventional shaped pieces. Rotation of the pieces in the right position is done automatically for you, upon retrieving a piece from the pool. Assuming the developers wanted to decrease the difficulty a bit, with this feature, given the fact this is not an easy, natural puzzle game. Some of the pieces have a circular marking at one of their border edge. These same markings are shown on the boundaries of the puzzle board as well. Showing where the first shard should be placed, to assure the players are off to a good start.Where on classic jigsaw puzzles, one tends to start of by laying the borders first and then group puzzles pieces by color and/or other distinct characteristics. This is next to impossible in Glass Masquerade, simply because of the extreme diversity of shapes and colors in the glass stained panes, which gives a refreshing experience. Shape of a glass piece is more important than what it resembles, to know where it is supposed to be placed. Pieces themselves are dispersed over rotatable turntables, concentric rings as you will, in a way not all shards are visible at once. This adds to the immersiveness of the experience, one tends to treat each piece at a time. Only a black silhouette of a shard is shown on the turntable. From the main menu, through puzzling gameplay, till a finished stage, all is animated in a pleasant fashion. In fact, for a game based on a more or less stagnant activity, there’s a surprising amount of liveliness to it all. Combined with appropriate chilling music and sound effects, the whole gives a trance-like experience, which effectively entertains the player for about 10-20 minutes of gameplay per puzzle country / exhibit. This game is astoundingly beautiful. Gameplay duration of a puzzle ramps up heavily when playing on hard difficulty, which is necessary to unlock all achievements. Fourthy achievements have to be unlocked to achieve a perfect game. Please be mindful, however, only 33 achievements are in the base game, for the remaining 7, all two paying DLC packs have to be purchased. To offset this, when all DLC is installed, there are a ton of exhibits available, guaranteeing hours of gameplay to enjoy. Overall, a perfect game can be easily achieved, given the fact you invest around 21 hours. Beware, if you are gunning for the achievements only, do not bother playing the game on the standard, normal difficulty level, but complete the puzzles on hard instead. I found myself coming back to the game on a monthly base, succesfully completing the entire game, together with its DLC, in the course of over a year or so. This is typically one of those games which gives me satisfaction, everytime, upon completing a stage. To glance at the beautifull glass stained window, equals to mirror what i had accomplished. Each time a puzzle is assembled, a deeper-meaning quote is shown, on which the player can ponder upon. Recommended for: - Jigsaw puzzles enthousiasts - Casual, relaxing type of gamers - Achievement hunters (be aware of mandatory DLC for a perfect game) Glass Masquerade 3 is meanwhile available as well. Cheers, SultanK

I love this game. I actually bought all 3 in the series, plus the DLC. This is my 2nd time playing this one so the replay factor is high. It's a little confusing (to me) as to what I had completed and such, but I don't care. The music is lovely, the clink of the glass pieces is satisfying and the artwork is gorgeous.

I played Honeylines first and enjoyed it so much, I had to try the twisted carnival of souls one. I mean, of course:) The same enjoyable tinkling sounds and calm music is in this one. The puzzles are much more varied and there are little blurbs about each one which is cool. The puzzles seem a bit more challenging than Honeylines and that might be due to the colours. They are not as vibrant as in the first and the puzzle images are a little difficult to see the borders as well so it takes awhile to see what image you just assembled. Even so, I've been enjoying it!

Beautiful imagery and unique puzzles Glass Masquerade continues with a second title - this time the stained glass puzzles take on a more fantastic or 'Wonderland' theme. DLC additions extend this theme to various scary monsters and female monsters out of fantasy mythology. I've always enjoyed the GM games - not only on Steam but also on the PSN. Not too difficult, fun to complete and also to look at, and not over-bloated into some monstrosity like Pixel Puzzles Ultimate ended up turning into. In fact, I'm pretty sure that one is out of control and the game is running itself. As high as the praise is that I want to give this game, I have to be honest. Some of the images aren't as good as the first game. The first game had a vibrance and variety of styles that made it truly fun and interesting to play. This game doesn't really have that. It's just a string of puzzles to unlock, and a kind of anti-climactic one at that. I found many of the puzzles messy and difficult to figure out what I was looking at. This is to be expected though, transitioning from objects such as watches, to art for scenery and people, beasts. Perhaps it is the vibrancy, or perhaps it is trying to translate overly complex images into simple glass windows that is to blame. I'm not saying this is the case all of the time. There are some great examples of blue-green puzzles, or green-violets that look stunning, so this lack of colour variation can be made to work well. It could also be just that the background art is too busy. I don't recommend trying to smash everything out in one sitting either. That is a sure-fire way to go to sleep in a hurry. Hard difficulty isn't that hard when you realise the anti-clockwise swirl on the pieces helps with rotating. Normal mode has no rotation - but I found this too simple... especially when there are 5-6 pieces painted bright orange with little target dots on them to help you get a few starters on the board. Every single puzzle in the main game is a circle, but they all have these starter pieces with dots on the edge so you are never really in any trouble with trying to start. The DLCs have some unique frames, and I think as long as you play on hard mode you will definitely get your value for money. Having said that, the game and DLCs seem to get discounts fairly often. It's worth it, even if all it does is mix up your week and give you a break from the more grindy games.
