The story of this game is beyond words. While the combat is somewhat lacking, I don't see it as a problem. The story comes first, and a beautiful story was told here. It was filled with humor when needed but also sincerity and beauty that brings a tear to my eye. I would recommend this game to anybody who wants to see a deep, touching story about three friends who go on a road trip together.

Honestly I'm really enjoying this game. I'm also queer, so that helps, of course. But it's an entirely ridiculous beginning and premise that I adore. It does get more and more serious as you go through the story. At this point, I'm just very attached to the four main characters. A few of the scenes have hit me hard. For combat, I'm not sure if I had great luck with pulling skills, but once I understood it, I had a lot of fun with it. It's cool-down based, and as long as you aren't fighting something two numbered levels above, there should be a possibility of victory. I'm on the post-game DLC now.

Loved the art, music, story and characters. Dialogue is extremely on the nose and occasionally a little hard to sit through. Could not stand the fights and some of this is me not enjoying the ATB system (sorry FFIV to FFIX) and some of this is I don't think it's implemented well enough or explained especially well in the tutorial. I think I might have had a better time if this was a visual novel or had that as an option. Still recommend even having said that, Act III in particular was great.

Combat can be a bit repetitive, but it definitely picks up in the second half, story is hit or miss, but overall I enjoyed my experience with the game. A solid 7/10. Would recommend.

Get in the Car, Loser! sets itself apart from other indie JRPGs by having the player equip various attacks to three different boards and combat unfolds in a real-time format with cooldowns. Basically, it’s an ATB-style JRPG. The emphasis on comboing and staggering enemies to deal multitudes of damage is lifted right from Final Fantasy XIII . The game’s mechanics (and it’s presentation, too) are simple. There are no stats to the heroes, only rank based on the trinkets they have equipped. Towards the later part of the adventure, the trinket abilities get more eclectic and there are more interesting customization decisions to be made! There’s no proper exploration. Navigation is done via driving down a highway where the player is given the choice to switch lanes and engage (or avoid) enemy encounters. It’s straightfoward but also very snappy. The game is about 10+ hours long so it’s a breezy experience that doesn’t wear out the welcome of its gameplay elements. The story is a weaker point. A lot of the themes (and even dialogue) feels directly pulled from real-life events. It got to a point where I assumed certain characters in the story were parallels to real-world people. Many serious aspects of the narrative fell flat for me because of how blunt it is. A lot of the dialogue I liked revolved around the weird world-building of this modernpunk world. The game’s style is pretty good, and that includes the music which feels more inspired by Persona than any Final Fantasy . It’s got a lot of soul/funk/J-pop flavours. The graphics are tight and pop with a cool & futuristic colour palette although I don’t love the character art. It has that “anime but less stylized” style that I see a lot when Western devs ape anime aesthetics, but your mileage will vary on that. Overall, I enjoyed this game and never thought I would play something inspired by Final Fantasy XIII . After one adapts to its eccentric battles, it can become a very snappy JRPG experience.
