Kanoa Ranks: 8.5/10 bought this game to support DONT NOD during their hour of need & was very pleasantly surprised. got it on sale & is worth full price!! a lovely gem of a game that has so much heart & a beautiful art style. it’s a very complex choice system & extremely educational, with a compelling narrative that instantly makes you feel connected to the game. it’s ultimately about real history & WW2, focused on Danish v German tensions. You play as Gerda, a half German half Dane nurse trying to save her husband after he’s taken by the nazis. lots of dialogue kinda similar to life of sir Brontë & has a day cycle where you can’t do everything. It’s a beautiful story where your choices absolutely matter & shape the narrative & your character relationships, and there’s a lot to discover. I learned a lot about Danish & German tensions & history while playing as well, definitely would require multiple playthroughs to see everything or to get all the achievements. absolutely worth playing if you’re a fan of choice matter games or want to support DONT NOD <3
Despite my little knowledge about history, this game created such an atmosphere with its music, storyline and visuals that it made me read more in depth about II World War. I loved how immersive the playstyle is and how it gives you multiple choices. In short: one of my favorite games for sure!
I'm a big fan of games that focus the lens of a human tragedy on the more easily forgotten victims. We've done WW2 narratives to death (and it doesn't seem to have made any impact as a cautionary tale as far as the rise of fascism in the world) and it's pretty delightful to see the story told from the perspective of a civilian caught in the middle of it all. There are some immediate positives that I really enjoyed about Gerda. For one, in a game with a reputation system; I appreciated that even if someone wasn't around, Gerda's reputation was affected by her decisions. In a lot of games like this, I often feel like the optimal choice is just saying whatever you needed to say to win the affections of those around you; but having your choices affect your reputation around town made the decisions feel more weighty. Admittedly it can feel like there's 'no winning' if every choice you make results in a negative with someone else; but I think that's the point and it makes the choice to move one way over the other far more interesting. Great games are about interesting choices, and interesting choices require impact which Gerda delivers in spades. There are too many people who need your help, and you just don't have the time/ resources to do it all; so what do you do? Admittedly, I think there were some NPC's that are too critical to the story that even though I actively went out of my way to jilt a particular npc (looking at you Reinhardt), I just kept bumping into them as they tried to blackmail me into helping them the next day; but outside of that my choices felt really weighty. I think the story does a great job of exploring themes around heritage, duty, and picking between the ones we love and the ones we live around. Gerda absolutely does a great job conveying the doubt, and the growth of someone thrust into uncertain times. As someone who has a background of mixed heritage myself, I often feel like I'm split between two worlds (neither of whom really want me), and Gerda's story threads that back and forth really beautifully. Overall; I applaud Don't Nods marvellous story telling efforts. For those of us who have enjoyed the Life is Strange franchise, Gerda is an interesting twist that still feels like you're walking down a well made path. This is a game whose mechanics really elegantly mirror the story components of trying to make the absolute most out of everything you do, because you know you're just not going to be able to do/ save everyone. On that note however, I will say that for the person who needs every trophy, and to see every outcome; I think Gerda might grate a little. I'm sure someone's got an FAQ out there for how to 100% this so you can at least see what saving everyone between multiple runs looks like; but I really just wanted to play Gerda the way I wanted. The people who endeared themselves to me were the ones I wanted to help, and I don't particularly need to find out what happens if I help out NPC X who I just didn't really care for (looking at you again Reinhardt). In conclusion; if you're a fan of short stories from the perspective of those we often overlook, with weighty decisions and some delightful heart string moments in-between the bleak history of war; Gerda is a great game that I'd very happily recommend.
What a deep game, showing how complex the situation and the realtionships were. Leaves one with a lot to think about - what would I have done - on which side of the fence would I have ended up on. An interactive story that provides a different insight to WW2 and how it effected people. Well made, will take time to let it sink in and then start a second play through and definitely make different decisions.
