This game is significantly harder than GemCraft - Chasing Shadows. The tactics developed for the previous game does not translate here. I recommend anyone playing this to be a bit more patient.

The depth & complexity in this game is incredible. The leveling mechanism, the pathway flexibilities for each level, the replayability (each level has 3 modes) & even some lore, all make this game a work of art. You just need to give it a little time.

A classic tower defence game with too much front-loaded grinding. 4/10 by modern standards 6/10 by classical standards BONUS POINTS for nostalgia (People who have been playing Gemcraft since the 2000s) This game has all the ingredients needed for a great tower defence game. Unfortunately, even as far as grindy tower defence games go, this one front-loads the grind too much. A few of the niche game systems are also poorly implemented. Probably the most frusting thing to use is the targetting and priority system. Because of the way the developer coded the game, spawn order is used as a tiebreaker. When multiple enemies are too close to each other, you can only select the latest spawned enemy for targetting. When a multi-hit tower is set to "Least Affected By Gem Specials", "Special", etc, and it has more valid targets than it has shots, it uses spawn order instead of "Nearest to Orb" as a secondary tiebreaker, causing some frustration. The "Nearest to Orb" priority doesn't always work properly with complex paths, especially on Pylon bounces. And the lack of a "highest HP" priority option is baffling from a game design perspective. These are all niche mechanics because they only matter in specific set-piece challenges, but this is nevertheless, frustrating. As for the front-loaded grind, here's a detailed list of how: CONTENT UNLOCK Content unlocks at a linear rate. This means that after clearing half the maps in the game, players will have access to about half the content - Skills, Spells, Enhancements, Encounters, etc. It feels like you're stuck in a tutorial lasting dozens of hours before you're allowed to experience the full game, with early levels being especially stale. The way most games do it (and this is the better way) is to have most of the content unlocked early on, with niche content (like Traits and Gem Types) scattered throughout more of the late-game. They can even do what they did with Gemcraft Chasing Shadows and unlock a weaker version of the thing early on, with the full version unlocked later. ACHIEVEMENT HUNTING Going out of my way to get achievements was one of the funnest parts of the game since it was often markedly different from general gameplay. The acheievements reset was especially fun because it let me farm achievements again, and there would be plenty of games where I would get an absolute glut of achievements. Unfortunately, it takes too long to reach the reset. They should have more resets (for a lower threshold) in the early game as well as in the late-game (with a higher threshold). TALISMANS It takes shadow cores to upgrade talisman fragments and those shadow cores are basically wasted if used on early fragments. Players are forced to choose between wasting a tonne of shadow cores early to see some marginal improvements, or wait until the late-game when they have some AllSkill fragments. It takes too long to really see talismans making a significant impact. A way to freely upgrade only lower-tier talismans (without increasing their sale value) or having partially upgraded lower-tier talismans drop might be a solution. TRIALS / VISION FIELDS Some of those trials actually do have an interesting premise, or genuinely do force the player to think about their strategy, but having one per field is way too much. There aren't THAT many great ideas so they end up being a chore, and one which doesn't allow players to benefit from their progression. (A key point of this game) Plus, the rewards are paltry and their significance drops off even further as players progress into the late-game. A few Vision Fields are fine. 100+ Trials is just boring. I do want to emphasize that this really does contain the necessary ingredients for a great tower defence game. It's mainly the grindiness of it that gets to me, and also a few minor complaints, like Talisman arrangement bonuses not really mattering in the late-late-game. If you want to try this game, you can get a very similar experience by playing Gemcraft Chasing Shadows (previous installment in the series) for free on Flashpoint. A few changes I liked, a few I didn't, but very similar overall.

The GemCraft I miss is Labyrinth, I must have spent 1000s of hours in that laggy flash game :D ... but chasing shadows and frostborn wrath each have their own charms, chasing shadows for its classic feel, frostborn wrath not least for the stunning 4k visuals and updated sound and music .. sometimes I'll just leave the game open and do something else for a bit, I vibe so much with GemCraft. All the best wishes to this deep-thought-developer :)

First 10 hours review: Gemcraft has always been my favourite TD game by miles since 2010 (on Armor Games website), and so far this one does not disappoint. I've seen a lot of negative comments/reviews, however I am either too early in the game, or I am Oleksandr Usyk of TD games, which is doubtful. The graphics are more polished than ever and I've noticed an improvement in the music/sound as well. Regarding the gameplay, following the tradition with each release there are new elements, which I won't mention due to spoilers. The only thing I am not convinced of yet is the crafting window - it may work for others but I prefer the humongous window in the older versions, where I could generate 36 gems with CTRL and bomb away the waves. I will update again once I've cleared the map and got into the harder modes later on, but so far it's definitely worth it for me.
