Amongst the tactics game I have played, this one is at the top of the list when it comes to the production value. Sounds, voices, atmosphere, graphics are all slick. You have some simple customization for your weapons and armor and this system will carry you on to the finish line as your search for these parts in every mission. However it is sad for me to say this quality does not apply to the story as we are exposed to a mediocre one throughout the missions so all that remains for us to play the tactics side of game. Unfortunately, Tactics part of the game didn’t captivate me as much as other tactics games I’ve played recently. I found myself alternating between brief play sessions and breaks, unable to fully immerse myself. Still this is one of the playable tactics game, released in the recent years and there are enough pieces here for me to recommend it.

It's like Xcom but somehow lacking something. The maps are very repetitive, you feel like you go to the same gate, open and kill all. Story was OK, good graphics, good cinematics. Progress of your chars is lackluster, many times feels better to just recruit a new guy with +1level than do missions with your old roster. It's still fun to play if you like Xcom type of games. It's a 7/10 but makes no sense to play it after you finish the SP story line (around 27hours).

Without hyperbole one of my favorite games of all time and looking at recent reviews (mixed) apparently SEVERELY UNDERRATED! The depth of character progression (skill trees with like 40 nodes out of which you can unlock 20 max, three armor parts, 3-5 weapon parts) is beautiful. There are distinct styles of setting up each class so you can have two characters with the same class who play very differently. You take them on different missions, you set them up in different positions, the synergy between these "types" is astounding... I cannot praise the classes and progression system enough, it's a game design gem. The moment to moment pacing is also fantastic thanks to all story cutscenes being skippable and thanks to enemy actions being grouped and played simultaneously whenever possible so you don't sit around watching the enemies for any longer than necessary. The enemy AI seems creative, yet mostly rational. The graphics and general art style are immaculate. Performance is good given the fidelity, I've run the game on an APU at 720p60 and on a gaming PC at 1080p144. Sound is fine once you turn off character voices. They don't say anything worth hearing so I just turn them off and listen to music. Thank god this is possible, but that's typical for Gears Tactics. Every feature that you really wish games like this had, Gears Tactics has it. Some examples: - Cutscenes? Skippable. - Controls? Offer several convenient ways to perform the same action and the buttons can of course be rebound. Very well playable with a controller, too. - Over the top blood effects you may get tired of or wouldn't want to show to a child? Can be turned off. Additional notes: - Jack, the robot, turns your team from 4 units into 5 and this makes player turns take TOO LONG! 4 characters with 3 actions is *perfect* pacing for this type of game. Simply select CLASSIC MODE when you start a campaign. I haven't played the "Jack" mode since my first playthrough, hundreds of ingame hours ago. Hopefully a sequel will not repeat the DLC's mistake. 5 characters are a no-go. Make it 4 or even just 3. - Difficulty scales well until Insane mode. Excluding Insane mode. From Experienced to Insane there is an absurd jump up in tedium because your units no longer get "downed" when their health reaches 0. They simply die on the spot, which means resetting to a checkpoint (5+ minutes of gameplay at worst) or restarting the whole level (10+ minutes easily). Unless you optimize all the fun out of your playstyle (!) it is UNLIKELY that you get through a mission without anyone getting downed just once. On Experienced difficulty Gears Tactics has a beautiful risk/reward balance. You can make a plan A and a plan B and take some major risks with plan A that can lead to a really strong position, then bail yourself out with plan B if the gamble fails. But forget about taking ANY risk in Insane mode. It's tedious and I wouldn't recommend anyone play it ever. The devs should have made one more difficulty level before this one where it's easy to get downed and a downed unit only lives one more turn. Removing the Downed state entirely is too radical and ruins the balance of the game. - The main criticism from me is that this game requires a Microsoft account and WILL ask you for your password more than once. If it was just a one time hassle I could ignore it but the fact that I've been prompted at least a dozen times to reenter the email and password when launching the game is absolutely baffling. The game is tied to my Steam account. You know it's a legit copy! Unacceptable. I'm subtracting a FULL POINT for this. You could have had a 9/10 from me but this anti-QOL feature makes Gears Tactics a mere 8/10

It's an average game at best. It's similar to XCOM but worse. For example, I like the customization but the game itself got boring. There is little mission variety and you have to do these side missions over and over to progress the main story. Aside from being repetitive, there are no different weapons. All you do is gather mods during missions which you attach to your armor or weapons and that's it. XCOM actually let's you research new powerful weapons which this game does not. It stays the same for the entire game. All in all this is a game you can spend a few hours on but I would only get it on sale.

Gears Tactics As a die-hard fan of Gears of War since the beginning, I was cautiously optimistic about this installment. However, I had some concerns since it is far from the over-the-shoulder, gore-ridden, bro-shooter I know and love. The turn-based strategy nature of Gears Tactics took some getting used to as it was my first in-depth experience with the genre, a genre I historically struggled to get into . Fortunately, the game still had the lore, gore, and chainsaw bayonets that I love from the Gears of War series. This helped me dive deeper into the TBS genre and enjoy my time spent playing. Gears Tactics introduces a new cast of characters, both COG (protagonists) and Locust(antagonists), as well as some COG “fodder” rescued throughout various missions. The protagonist and antagonist are also new to the franchise, but the game does a good job explaining their roles and outlining the story and goal of this particular title in the series. This installment could be played independently of the others in the universe without need for other knowledge of the GOW universe. The experience did not add much new content to the lore of Gears of War, which is a safe bet when reaching outside of a game's primary genre as they are attempting to capture new audience that may not be familiar with the universe built in the previous games. The story was very entertaining and kept me coming back for more as expected from any GOW installment, compelling dramatic writing, humorous and whitty one-lines any Gears fan is used to; but the gameplay left me wanting more. The gameplay itself was fun but as the game went on it rarely introduced new gameplay mechanics which could lead to burn out, luckily the story and atmosphere kept me going. One aspect new to any Gears game was character and weapon customization. This feature allows the player to modify gun parts and armor that impact gameplay mechanics, something completely new to the GOW franchise. These upgrades not only changed cosmetically but allowed for fine-tuning of characters to fit the way I wanted to play them; for example making a kill-shot with the Longshot (sniper rifle) automatically reload, or increase the accuracy with the Mulcher (minigun). The cusomization was not something I was expecting from a game from the GOW universe but it was a welcome addition to the title! In conclusion, I’m happy to have completed Gears Tactics, and I absolutely recommend this title particularly if you enjoy turn-based strategy games. For me, it was a perfect “field trip” into a genre of games I don’t normally play, with a theme I know and love that helped me feel comfortable giving the genre a shot. Kudos to The Coalition for trying something completely new with the GOW franchise, even if the genre of the game is not what made me fall in love with Gears I consider it time well spent!
