This could very well be the last war game I ever need to buy that deals with the eastern front of WW2. It wont, but it could be. I don't actually know much yet about the game. My hours are often offline and not tracked properly, but I am an absolute novice wargame general. I'm a tactical idiot, and not much of a historian. A lot of people said the Grisgby Series of games were complex and could be overwhelming. So, I naturally stayed away from them and played other titles. Less complex ones. Ones that always seemed to be missing or abstracting important pieces to simplify and make things less complex. But, often it was noticeable and would detract from the experience. What I have noticed often in wargames both PC and tabletop, is the documentation can really be poorly written or packaged. Often, in such a way as to make the process of learning difficult without a community. Wargames that have great supporting documentation and manuals can be a breath of fresh air. Gary Grigsby's WitE2 has a great manual and supporting documents imo. They spoon feed you information in the beginning, just enough to get you into a game and messing around, Understanding the large concepts at play, with later chapters digging deeper into certain topics. Theoretically, you never need to dig further to play. I assume to win will be a different story. Also if you play these games while trying to learn more about history, this game provides great in game resources called the "Witepedia" with links to Wikepedia articles you can also read. Before you know it, your down a wikepedia rabbit hole. Not to mention a ton of great content creators with tutorials, a ton of forum posts with a ton of useful information already available. If you are on the fence, I would read the manual a bit, see if the complexity is broken down enough for you. Surprisingly, it was for me. It's just a matter of figuring out how the puzzle pieces fit, right? Also, look for the one page guides in the guides tab in Steam. Also, included in the game manuals folder. 9 one page guides in all, basically break the game down. Enough you could theoretically only read that to play. I'll update this in a couple years and let you know if I ever become any good, lol.

Personally, I find this game much more approachable than the 502 page manual might lead you to believe. There are a couple of reasons for this: 1) There is a lot of explanation of things in the manual that you really don't need to know in order to play. 2) There is a good tutorial scenario with accompanying section in the manual that help get you started. 3) Unlike another wargame that will go unmentioned, I find the interface in this one does a reasonable job with the most common actions (things like movement, checking what units are part of a larger command structure, doing quick and deliberate attacks, etc.) Highly recommended for those willing to take a minimal amount of time reading section 4 of the manual, and then playing through the tutorial scenario. Not recommended for those who want to play the full campaign with no effort to understand some of the basic concepts first (like why resting units is important, or why encircling units makes a difference). That will just lead to needless frustration. Highly recommended for those who enjoying forming a larger plan and then trying to execute it. Not recommended for those who just want to push some counters around without understanding the bigger picture. This is a thinking game, and playing it does require a certain amount of thought. But it doesn't require a PhD, a genius intellect, or the ability to memorize a 500 pg manual. It might be a good idea to be able to read a table of contents and go to the right part of the manual to get a question answered. Edit: I now have 51 hours in the game, and have purchased the Steel Inferno DLC. I have played the two intro scenarios (several times), and the Road to Leningrad scenario twice (once for a minor loss, and once for a draw). I am currently playing the Steel Inferno Scenario road to Karelia which adds the Finnish Army to the Road to Leningrad scenario. The more I play this, the better I like it, and I feel I have already gotten good value for my money (I bought both the game and the DLC on sale). I anticipate by the time I am through with this game, that will be excellent value for my money even if I had played full price. EDIT: I now have 88+ hours in the game. And I still haven't even touched all there is for this game to offer. Currently I am on my 2nd play through of Operation Typhoon 41. It is touch and go, but I might well fall short. This all to say, if you like this kind of game, this one is a gem. EDIT: 148.1 hours in and: 1) I haven't begun to touch all there is to do in this game. 2) I still haven't learned all the subtleties of various things either. But: I am having a great deal of fun playing, and I am having a fair amount of success playing against the AI, which definitely does not just roll over and die. I am super-glad I took the plunge and bought this one. Cons: There isn't much I have to say negative about this game. It is heavily focused for the grognard types willing to put in the time to learn the system and spend the time necessary to play it. With that focus, it isn't surprising that the non-NATO units designations are not very pleasing, at least to my eye. I like NATO symbology and have been using it for many many years so for me it is natural and what I would prefer anyway. But it might be a barrier to entry for those who would otherwise enjoy the game.
