Great strategy game placed in space. Now that I've played enough I can definitely recommend it to those that like Civilization or Endless style.

A classic 4X game. If you're looking for a more old school experience in the genre this is a good choice. Not a good game for the impatient, but definitely the type of game you can watch YouTube and play at the same time.

This game to me is the perfect 4X/strategy game. It's easy to get into yet has tons of depth. There is more here to work with than in a game like Civ5, but it doesn't overwhelm you like a Paradox game. There are so many factors that you can use to your advantage. You have a ton of control over your economy in the form of tax rate, where your funding goes, and how you make money. I find that this right here is the root of what makes me come back to this game. Want money fast? Establish trade routes and focus production on economy starbases to improve them. That is risky though as they can be destroyed, so you can also just focus your colonies on making money. But this has a drawback of lowering production and research on them. Want money really fast? You can sell tech and ships to other civs for money, but maybe they will use them against you! You can also spend production and effort on making citizens happy, which means they will be willing to pay more taxes or form more lucrative forms of government. Once you have that down, you can change funding between research, domestic production to improve colonies, or military production to build ships. I constantly adjust this during my games and it can be the difference between victory and defeat. Feel secure? Rush research to gain an edge on your enemy. That enemy attacks you when you aren't ready? Put all funds into military production to pull a WW2 USA and outproduce them. Once you conquer them, fund social production to rebuild their worlds for your own. The ship building is this games trademark feature and it never gets old. Upgrading your fleet as you play is a huge factor in keeping you engaged and smart building can change the tide of war. Sure you could just max out weapons, but if your empire is large you can put better engines on your ships for mobility. Know who you are fighting? See what weapons they use and equip the right defenses which are much cheaper than weapons and can make your ships near invincible in the right setting. The AI in this game is fantastic. Civ5 is my most played game, but the AI in that game always feel gamey and unrealistic. In GalCiv, the AI feel like living beings that play realistically. In Civ when you get super powerful, everyone is a dick to you for no reason which just gives you a reason to conquer them. In GalCiv, they suck up to you to stay alive! Or if they attack, they form alliances with other weak civs to stand a chance. Some civs are wicked smart in this game. The Thalans for example feel as if I am playing another human. I've played this game on and off since 2008 and I still learn new things about it. Every game has a new event I have not seen, a new tactic from an enemy civ, or a new element to exploit. I truly think this is the perfect strategy game and it is absolutely worth learning.

Its a very classic and solid example of the 4X genre from way back when, it doesn't really do much new but what it does do is very well designed and not too hard to pick up on. Weakest part of the game is honestly the lore. Its more or less just Star Trek with a sprinkle of original ideas.
