So this is similar to Northgard, it feels more immersive and customizable. However, this game feels incomplete. There is definitely promise with a little more refining. For $6 it's 100% worth it. I wouldn't pay more than $10.

8/10: Age of Empires in the snow. What a breath of fresh air. A slower, more methodical approach to the classic Real-Time Strategy genre. I guess it's technically an "indie" title, but it didn't feel that way. This was a cut above the standard indie. This is 'A' quality. Classic building mechanics, different resource types to collect, fun battles, secondary abilities, heroes and research and a decent story. It's got all the classic elements of RTS we all remember and love. This is the first project of this scale for this developer, and I only see good things for them in the future. They put a lot of heart and soul into this game, attention to detail, and a fun story with changing objectives. Not to mention dynamic weather patterns with very manageable micromanagement of your towns. Is it Age of Empires 5? No. Many of the buildings look the same, the music (though beautiful) can get repetitive at times, and a single voice actor narrates the entire story. But you know what this reminds me of? Classic Blizzard Entertainment. Warcraft 1. Age of Empires 1. And remember how good the sequels were? If Frostheim's sequels could bring in elements from Norse mythology such as gods, betrayals, a deep story...the sequels could be epic! The foundation is there. =D

This is a polished Viking-era RTS game that feels like a modern, much more feature-rich version of Northgard. It has a similar mechanic, with the fog of war obscuring most of the map, and as you explore you have interesting encounters and of course your AI adversaries to deal with. The game is different from Northgard in several key ways, in that you don't have predefined areas to take over, you can build wherever you like. There is also an interesting water/ship mechanic. The graphics are also very sharp and add a lot to the gameplay. It has good voice acting as well, with your Viking grunting and yelling in some language that I can't understand but appreciate. :D The range of units you can recruit is also broader, including siege engines. You can also play just against AI, with no prestige victory, fight for domination ( wipe out all other viking settlements ). That is my preferred way to play and is the most exciting / challenging game mode. Before I bought the game, I read that some players get confused by the game modes and find the game boring, slow or 'chill', because they don't play domination ( there is nothing chill about domination mode ). Setting up the game to play for domination is not intuitive like in Northgard, where there is a 'domination' selection. To play domination in Frozenheim, play single player and under conditions uncheck 'Ragnarok' and 'Fame'. Add in as many AI factions as you like ( the AI is well balanced, I find medium/hard the most fun, and usually play against 5-7 AI on a very large map ). One of the things I enjoy is how you can use the terrain and tactics to deceive and defeat your enemies. In my most recent game, the AI had a settlement at the base of a cliff. I sent a scout to watch their village from the top of the cliff, then I positioned 10 archer units on the cliffs, hidden in the trees just south of the scout. I then sent in my Champion Sigrid with some elite shield units and formed a shield wall further south along the cliff band, visible from the enemy settlement. Sure enough, the AI sent their army south along the cliff band. My scout spotted them coming, then the archers ambushed them from the top of the cliff, causing huge casualties, and by the time the remnants got to Sigrid, she crushed them. The settlement fell with almost no casualities on my side. There are some ways the game could be improved, I think. The happiness mechanic is a little opaque, and I've never been able to get to happiness level 9 ( which is pretty advanced, but prevents me from doing the highest level upgrades to my Viking lodge ). It would be nice to be able to hover over the happiness measure and what it consists of. Like, why is it stuck at 7.1? That's pretty happy, but not really happy! How do I get to really happy? =D For a reference, I like the following similar games, with my hours played. If you like the games listed below, you may enjoy this one. Warhammer III Total War ( 264 hours ) Warhammer II Total War ( 1500 hours ) They are Billions ( 315 hours ) Northgard ( 351 hours ) Planetary Annihilation: Titans ( 300 hours ) Stellaris ( 137 hours )

Great city builder/RTS, and a hidden gem if this is your genre. Faster paced than something like Manor Lords, and less micro management, it works and feels great. A good comparison, i think, is that it's a viking version of Company of heroes, in scale and pace. Enjoyable campaign following the stories of different vikings. You even get to control wolves and bears as units! Ignore the negative comments. If it was a Ā£60 AAA game, then a few more features would have been needed. But at the low price tag, and from a smaller studio, definitely worth a buy, even at full price.

At first glance, outside of the unpronounceable names and words, nothing special here. Just your classic AOE, Stronghold, Cossacks, etc., RTS type of games. Chop wood, harvest food, collect stones and iron, train soldiers, wash ā€“ rinse ā€“ repeat, until you vanquish your enemies (or until you die yourself if you play the Free Build mode into perpetuity). But at the same time, the great graphics, the genuine Viking atmosphere, the addition of unique buildings (like the Elderā€™s guild, burial mount, runestones, etc.), the different clans you can join, and a rather deep ā€˜tech treeā€™ for each clan, are all elements that bring us to new lands and offer a new take on an old genre. The way they incorporated water, with the ease to build and use ships, also brilliantly adds realism to the Viking-life without overburdening nor forcing us into using this aspect of the gameplay. Therefore, it is somewhat strange that a game based on a very old (RTS) concept feels ā€˜refreshingā€™....and maybe itā€™s also just the cold crisp weather of the North....But I personally truly enjoy playing it and will certainly come back to it regularly, as the various game modes (from campaigns to free build, to an highly customizable squirmish mode, and the newly added Jarl's Tournament), really offer lots of replayability. But anyway, since when a true Viking cares about a stranger's opinion?! So donā€™t take my word: Just gather your courage, a warm blanket, and a cup of mead. Then summon your inner 'Erik the Red' and try it for yourself! Even if only for a few hours, you wonā€™t regret your very unique trip to these cold and hostile lands. FOR VALHALLA!!!!
