Tldr: it was fine The good: Graphics - it is 2.5 instead of the traditional 2d and the environments look decent and there's visual clarity for most mechanics and npcs. Character swapping system - in this game you can control three different characters and swap between them at will, barring a short cooldown, and call in them for short periods of time to provide backup. It is a neat mechanic that sets this game apart from most others in the genre. Plus each character uses weapon typess unique to themselves so the playstyles and combos are not shared among them. Character progression - The rpg elements let you feel like your character never really stagnates since you will find items that increase your characters stats constantly in addition to stats from levels, upgrades to weapons(both in the actual weapons and the enhancements on the weapons) Movement - the movement feels smooth and responsive(except for the glide mechanic required for later platforming, but that is more of an issue with a poor choice of assigned button that can't be changed). After you get a few movement upgrades such as double jump and dashing through enemies, movement feels nice. Variety in zones - There's a lot of zones and they include most of the staples for the genre. They all look different from each other too so visual distinction between zones is high and the map isn't small because of it. Music - I enjoyed it, overall. Not a lot to say about this tbh. The bad: Graphics - apart from the the three main characters and a few other females, the character models are pretty jank, especially when in motion for cutscenes. The captain and cook look particularly rough. Cutscenes - adding to the previous point, the cutscenes were sort of messy. The camera often cuts around at random times, the animations are a bit janky, and the models used in the cutscenes likely haven't been upgraded from their default models much because you can see a jarring lack of detail in some sections. It may sound harsh but most of the cutscenes could have been cut and reduced to dialogue boxes and the story wouldn't have suffered at all. Story - typically, you don't play games of this genre for the story so it isn't a terrible thing but it is very forgettable. The starting premise is interesting and the lore is fine. Everything else is just a bit lacking. Again it isn't an awful thing since these types of games don't live and die on the story, but the gameplay. The meh: Combat ease - the combat is mostly fairly easy. You can stunlock most enemies until they are dead. The ones you can't keep stunlocked are easy to dodge since attacks are telegraphed. There's few difficulty spikes in the game. It isn't necessarily a bad thing since not every game needs to be tough as nails but if you like a challenge, you probably won't find it here. There are only two difficulties, which amounts to an easy mode and a normal mode. I honestly couldn't tell the difference between the two since the only difference is you get a small invincibility window after being hit on the easy difficulty. the npc's seemed to hit about as hard and die as quickly between the two difficulties. Audio - the dialogue is only in Japanese and Chinese(at the time that I played the game). If you are someone who doesn't like reading subtitles when people are speaking and you don't speak those two languages, you might not like that. The rest of us probably won't care though. Bugs - normally this would be in the bad section but they were honestly pretty minor and didn't affect the gameplay. The bugs were character model occasionally stuttering when opening dialogue with npcs and/or closing the map, the map disappearing at one point(requiring a full restart, and the game seemingly flipping a coin to decide whether it boots on my primary monitor(like every game I have ever played) or my secondary monitor. They were minor annoyances and didn't get in the way of actually getting anything done in game. It is still worth mentioning since they were present. No NG+ - after completing the game you can explore the map more, grind for more levels/gear/cores/etc, finish quests you ignored previously, do a postgame quest to unlock an optional boss, and do the boss rush mode. NG+ is pretty typical for games of this genre so I was surprised. Exploration - although the environments were good and varied, there was little backtracking. After the first few zones, you will have most of the movement abilities you need to complete explore each new area so you will seldom have to go back to previous zones to collect treasures that were out of reach the first time through. Despite having quite a few negative things to say about it, the game was certainly not bad since the gameplay itself was fine and most of the gripes comes from secondary aspects. However, it felt like the game could have been fleshed out a bit more in terms of exploration, story, and presentation. If you just like the genre or want an anime flavored game to play, I would wait for a sale. If you absolutely love the genre then you can maybe justify buying this at full price. For anyone with no interest or experience with the genre, or don't like anime flavored games, I cannot recommend this to you.
