This is the most fun I've had with the "RPGvania" subgenre since Bloodstained. Fronter Hunter sees you playing as 3 separate characters who are swappable on the fly. Each character has multiple weapon types to equip with their own fight game style combos. That together with the vast array of magic spells and passives creates a nearly never ending box of toys to play with throughout the game. That's exactly what I wanted out of the game, so I had a great time. That said, there are some caveats that might hinder others enjoyment of the game. The story is ecchi anime nonsense. The map is vast, but not particularly interesting in its level design. The difficulty curve is strange. Some early fights are rather difficult, but then all difficulty disappears until 2/3 of the way through. There's an extremely difficult boss followed by a couple of rather difficult bosses, and then its back to easy for the remainder of the game. That's about all I have to say. Absolutely worth the time if you just want to have some fun with a huge variety of combat abilities and fighting styles and aren't too worried about Hollow Knight levels of polish.

Tldr: it was fine The good: Graphics - it is 2.5 instead of the traditional 2d and the environments look decent and there's visual clarity for most mechanics and npcs. Character swapping system - in this game you can control three different characters and swap between them at will, barring a short cooldown, and call in them for short periods of time to provide backup. It is a neat mechanic that sets this game apart from most others in the genre. Plus each character uses weapon typess unique to themselves so the playstyles and combos are not shared among them. Character progression - The rpg elements let you feel like your character never really stagnates since you will find items that increase your characters stats constantly in addition to stats from levels, upgrades to weapons(both in the actual weapons and the enhancements on the weapons) Movement - the movement feels smooth and responsive(except for the glide mechanic required for later platforming, but that is more of an issue with a poor choice of assigned button that can't be changed). After you get a few movement upgrades such as double jump and dashing through enemies, movement feels nice. Variety in zones - There's a lot of zones and they include most of the staples for the genre. They all look different from each other too so visual distinction between zones is high and the map isn't small because of it. Music - I enjoyed it, overall. Not a lot to say about this tbh. The bad: Graphics - apart from the the three main characters and a few other females, the character models are pretty jank, especially when in motion for cutscenes. The captain and cook look particularly rough. Cutscenes - adding to the previous point, the cutscenes were sort of messy. The camera often cuts around at random times, the animations are a bit janky, and the models used in the cutscenes likely haven't been upgraded from their default models much because you can see a jarring lack of detail in some sections. It may sound harsh but most of the cutscenes could have been cut and reduced to dialogue boxes and the story wouldn't have suffered at all. Story - typically, you don't play games of this genre for the story so it isn't a terrible thing but it is very forgettable. The starting premise is interesting and the lore is fine. Everything else is just a bit lacking. Again it isn't an awful thing since these types of games don't live and die on the story, but the gameplay. The meh: Combat ease - the combat is mostly fairly easy. You can stunlock most enemies until they are dead. The ones you can't keep stunlocked are easy to dodge since attacks are telegraphed. There's few difficulty spikes in the game. It isn't necessarily a bad thing since not every game needs to be tough as nails but if you like a challenge, you probably won't find it here. There are only two difficulties, which amounts to an easy mode and a normal mode. I honestly couldn't tell the difference between the two since the only difference is you get a small invincibility window after being hit on the easy difficulty. the npc's seemed to hit about as hard and die as quickly between the two difficulties. Audio - the dialogue is only in Japanese and Chinese(at the time that I played the game). If you are someone who doesn't like reading subtitles when people are speaking and you don't speak those two languages, you might not like that. The rest of us probably won't care though. Bugs - normally this would be in the bad section but they were honestly pretty minor and didn't affect the gameplay. The bugs were character model occasionally stuttering when opening dialogue with npcs and/or closing the map, the map disappearing at one point(requiring a full restart, and the game seemingly flipping a coin to decide whether it boots on my primary monitor(like every game I have ever played) or my secondary monitor. They were minor annoyances and didn't get in the way of actually getting anything done in game. It is still worth mentioning since they were present. No NG+ - after completing the game you can explore the map more, grind for more levels/gear/cores/etc, finish quests you ignored previously, do a postgame quest to unlock an optional boss, and do the boss rush mode. NG+ is pretty typical for games of this genre so I was surprised. Exploration - although the environments were good and varied, there was little backtracking. After the first few zones, you will have most of the movement abilities you need to complete explore each new area so you will seldom have to go back to previous zones to collect treasures that were out of reach the first time through. Despite having quite a few negative things to say about it, the game was certainly not bad since the gameplay itself was fine and most of the gripes comes from secondary aspects. However, it felt like the game could have been fleshed out a bit more in terms of exploration, story, and presentation. If you just like the genre or want an anime flavored game to play, I would wait for a sale. If you absolutely love the genre then you can maybe justify buying this at full price. For anyone with no interest or experience with the genre, or don't like anime flavored games, I cannot recommend this to you.

It's a lot of content but more of the same. Game that drags on and on and on. It's not metroidvania, just a little bit of its elements with few closed doors, progress is rather linear. Characters are cute and feel nice to control but unofortunately here is little to none platforming challenges. Combat feels off, I think there needs to be less animation after being knocked off(you get hit by consecutive attacks and can't do anything), hitboxes feel just weird where if you stand close abilities just go through enemy and miss, maybe adding collision detection would help.I think it needs A LOT of tuning,it is not in acceptable condition for game that is basically just non-stop combat. There are several systems to grind for but I didn't find them necessary to progress. I would still recommend the title for anyone who likes 2D anime action games with cute girls.

This is my personal opinion. I love this game, a great vania type. Im in almost 80% of the map and having a very good time. Lots of gear to collect. i really like how u can instantly switch between characters and that all of the characters have to die in order for you to fail. Games pretty easy and relaxing, not all games should be soulslike;:))). For the pricetag i think this game is great, like i said im 80% of the map and have played over 35 hours, thats a long time for this type of game, now im just afraid that its gonna end soon. I wish it was even longer:)) *Nice graphs *Instant switch between chars *Lots of gear to find and craft, 3-4 diff types of weapons for all characters to craft and find. Armor+accesory. *Nice weapon/armor/accessory slot system *Funny story *Long gametime if youre not rushing like crazy. *Lots of save points and teleport points. *Lots of skills/combos For my taste this is 10/10.

Charming indie Metroidvania with a healthy amount of content. Story Live-streamer military officer Erza and her crew explore a strange new land. It's a light-hearted event-driven story rather than a character-driven one. Don't expect award-winning material, but it moves the plot along and the cutscenes are fully voiced and look good. The character chemistry is pretty good, though the characters don't stray too far from their anime tropes. Score: 6.5/10 Presentation The first time I saw the trailer I was like "wow". For what it's going for, the vibrant, cel-shaded anime style works well. Attacks are flashy, voices and sound effects are on-point. There's a lot of detail, from the characters' outfits to environments. For the most part, the UI was intuitive too. Score: 8/10 Gameplay There's two main parts to Frontier Hunter, the Metroidvania part and the supporting systems. The Metroidvania part is pretty solid and a familiar formula. Navigate various 2D stages, do quests, beat the boss etc. Along the way, Frontier Hunter's combat system is combo-based. Control up to 3 characters, unlocked via main story progression. Choose 2 weapons for each character. The weapons have a set of normal attacks, jump attacks, specials done with commands like back-forward+Attack or down-up+Attack, supers. Movement starts limited but eventually gets to air dashing and double jumping and wall climbing. After unlocking a few specials and getting nice gear, it's a pretty fun formula. The supporting systems are overall not bad but somewhat janky. The map feels open but is divided into rooms. Transitioning from one room to another, for example jumping into a hole or walking through a corridor, changes the camera view completely and respawns all enemies in the new room. It can get quite disorienting to stand at the top of a stage, jump to swipe at a flying bat and oops it's the next room, then get pulled back down to the previous room where everything has respawned. Or the same thing from getting prodded and falling into a hole. Another thing is while the game is mostly helpful with quest markers early on, later there are puzzles involving locked doors or inaccessible items where they aren't marked with a quest marker despite being important to a quest. There is a manual map-marking feature so you can mark them yourself. The label was kind of small so I missed it until fairly late -- use it! Also, building a character involves a Tetris minigame. Enemies drop stat boosters in various shapes like horizontal bars, squares, vertical bars and so on. Every equipment piece has a bunch of empty boxes to fill with these boosters. A fairly big part of the game revolves around trying to fit everything nicely across all 3 gear slots (weapon, armor, accessory). Score: 7/10 Overall: 7.2/10 Fun and very well put together, just with quite a bit of getting lost, janky transitions and time spent playing Tetris.
