Summary Freedom Fighters is a squad-based, third-person shooter with a decent campaign, simple mechanics and surprisingly fun and immersive gameplay, adorned with great music scores. Highly recommended. Stats [*] Time played so far: 18+ hours [*] Difficulty level (Demonstrator, Rebel, ... , Revolutionary): Freedom Fighter [*] Campaign completed? Yes [*] Achievements unlocked: N / A Preface [*] Playing Freedom Fighters now in 2024 feels like a nostalgic trip you take back to when you were younger without a care in the world! The game is 21 years old, from all the way back in 2003. It got remade in 2020 to work on more modern PCs, and this review covers this specific Steam version. Gameplay [*] Excellent level design There are multiple paths to reach your various objectives in each mission. Would you like to look around and investigate the alleyways and see if there's a back door somewhere? Climb over that rubble and maneuver your way to the roof of the adjacent building? Or would you rather attack head-on with your small but devoted group of soldiers? Pssst! I wouldn't recommend that! [*] Revolutionary squad tactics For its time back in 2003, these mechanics were sort of unheard of, if not outright unprecedented: You can recruit and then control a increasing number of NPCs in each mission, ordering them around the place in real time. They can either: follow you if the coast is clear, scout an area ahead clearing it of enemies, attack a specific enemy, and stand their ground in an area defending it. The closest game from that time that has a very similar concept is Mass Effect from 2007, a long four years after this one came out. [Irrelevant: I love the Mass Effect trilogy; it's one of my top three game series of all time, and I highly recommend everyone to play it]. Another game from that era that also employs squad tactics is Republic Commandos, which came out two years later in 2005. I cannot recall other examples to be honest. [*] Rewarding system The more major and secondary objectives you complete, the more charisma you gain. Earn enough, and you unlock a spot for another freedom fighter to fight by your side. Nearing the very end of the campaign, I've unlocked a staggering eleven spots! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3296408396 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3309109035 It's absolutely a blast ordering three to cover our backs, three to stand guard by the door while the remaining five storm the room. It's almost OP at that point but that was literally in the very last mission of the game. [*] Simplified strategic gameplay At each stage in the story there are two to three missions to complete, punctuated by a cutscene furthering the story. You're free to start whichever mission you please, of course. There is a more strategic way of doing it though, depending on your own tactics: Would you start with the mission that will lower the influx of troops in the area, making your next two missions met with relatively fewer enemy troops? Or maybe raid the ammunition depot, depriving the enemy of their firepower? Your choice. Graphics and audio [*] Older but acceptable graphics They show their age but are still decent, all things considered. [*] Average voice acting for the main characters. Nothing mind blowing here. It's noteworthy to mention that Isabella's is very well done. The Russian voice overs are exaggerated, something you'd expect hearing in a Cold War era film. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3309103727 Adding a distinct New York City accent to American NPCs was an inspired choice though. Most of your squaddies adorn our ears with their heavy NYC accent in response to your orders. Fun! [*] Iconic music score by none other than Jesper Kyd himself, of Assassin's Creed and Hitman OST fame. Remember those [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K892qn3U524&ab_channel=JesperKyd-Topic]captivating music scores from AC2 with Ezio? Yes, he composed most of those! Now his brilliance is at display in this little gem, and it shows! [*] Crescendo-filled background music really sells the heroic vibe, making your work towards each objective feel that much more important. The few vocals being in Russian add a nice touch to it! Spasiba! [To my Russian pals, please forgive me butchering your harsh and unforgiving language! Just kidding!] Pros [*] Fluid movement Your character's movement is surprisingly natural, and so are the reactions of the enemies to your shots: Shoot them in the leg and they stumble but not die. Shoot them in the head avoiding their helmet and they instantly die. This is pretty impressive considering this a third-person shooter from 2 decades ago. [*] Challenging but fair I played on the second-to-most-difficult setting and it was definitely not a walk in the park. The game deceivingly seems easy to play but don't be fooled: Completing a mission requires your use of proper tactics and getting familiar with the unique layout of each map / level. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3309106890 You'll be mowed time by a hail of Kalashnikov bullets if you stroll out of cover. Running into the open without your squaddies covering you? That's a sure way to restart your mission, losing all your progress in the process. [*] [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/1402630/Freedom_Fighters_Soundtrack/]All 18 OST tracks are yours when you get the game. Now ask me how to listen to them in my Steam library and I'd have to google it for you! [*] Manual quick saves Available only at designated locations, namely the manhole covers, making manual saves available but you still need to work for them just a little bit. This is crucial in a long, multi-objective mission, as it saves you from the agony of losing progress in case you die after clearing two-thirds of it. Cons [*] Inaccurate aiming Aiming works fine, mostly. When it doesn't, it's a bit strange but this doesn't happen often. [*] The inability to dismiss a freedom fighter in your squad once you've chosen them Not directly. You can however, send them into the thick of enemy forces, wait for them to get downed, and instead of clearing the area and reviving them, you can recruit someone else, replacing them. It's doesn't feel right that the game allows you to do that. [*] Unclear objective in the mission before last After you accomplish your goal, the mission doesn't end as usual. There's no mention at all how to proceed. I had to check a YT playthrough video to see it after trying to take down that spoiler that appeared for a while. [*] The game crashed three times for me. losing my current mission progress each time. It always happened in the same mission and at a certain point in time and always ten minutes after I manually saved. So I got past that point by not saving and doing the mission from start to finish in one go. Achievements [*] Total: N / A [*] This is a game from a time when achievements weren't even an idea in the minds of consultant psychologists, banking on our OCD tendencies. [*] Perfect Game +1 ? No Conclusion Highly recommended! Best time to buy is on sale. It goes for less than $2 and it's absolutely worth it, even beyond the nostalgia goggles. If you're feeling charitable and can afford clicking twice, here's [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44352372/] my curator to give it a follow. It helps with the good, old motivation, thank you!
