Overall: Foxhole is an interesting game, but not always fun. If your brain lights up at “World War 2 logistics game” try it out. The Good: + You pay for the game once, and that’s it. No subscriptions, no micro-transactions, no pay-to-win. + The community is amazing. They make up for many of the game’s shortcommings. It’s not uncommon for some random player to drop what they are doing and spend an hour teaching the game to a new player. The community’s culture is fun – everything is for the war effort. + In real-life logistics wins wars. But few war games even attempt a logistics system. It’s fascinating to see huge stockpiles in rear areas, and at the same time see the front line collapse due to a lack of supplies. + Foxhole has low hardware requirements. If you’re gaming on an 8 year old laptop you can still run it. The Bad: - Foxhole is brutal to new players. Everything about the game is complicated. The simple act of refueling a vehicle is a 14-step process. Where do you learn this process? Not in-game. There’s no tutorial, few in-game tips, and the UI is garbage. (For those who want to argue: yes there is another, simpler, way to refuel vehicles but it involves a button that the UI doesn’t label. So how are new players supposed to know about it?) For the first few weeks you’re going to spend as much time watching YouTube tutorial videos as you do playing. Shoutout to the content creators who have made this game playable. - Foxhole is brutal to solo players. Want to operate a tank? You can’t do it alone. Combat vehicles require a crew of at least 2, some tanks require 5. Want to produce artillery shells without a clan? Even if you can build a factory, it will crumble into dust. The game is nearly unplayable without a clan/regiment. - Foxhole is brutal to all players. Foxhole punishes its players because it hates them. Here is one example of many: Much of the game revolves around making, moving, and storing supplies. But often removing supplies from a building requires “assembling” them: you click on the item and then you wait. Filling a shipping container can take 20 minutes of clicking on an item, waiting, then clicking on another item. Even with player workarounds it’s still not fun. - Did I mention there’s no tutorial? Yes, I did mention it. And there’s a reason I’m saying it again. - You’re just a cog in a machine. You can do your part, but whether your side wins or loses isn’t up to you. Realistic? Yes. Fun? No. - The game is pretty much run by the big regiments. (In Foxhole clans/guilds are called regiments.) They divide up resource fields before a war. They organize offensives. They control the airplanes and the battle tanks. They build the end-game weapons like battleships and nukes. You can make your own small regiment, but you’ll still be pushed out of parts of the game. - The isometric perspective is a headache that never goes away. A final note: don’t trust the Steam review score. Many reviews are left by veteran players who are unhappy with the latest balance change. All part of the drama of Foxhole.

I played for the first time yesterday. The community is very welcoming. But what really sold me was the gameplay. To sum up my first hour. I sees my fellow soldier go down on the front line. I rush over and pick him up and carry him back behind our lines looking for a medic. Both of us calling out for a medic. But we couldn’t find one. Fellow soldier says to let him bleed out. So I find the perfect spot on the coastline and kept him company till his timer ran out. The immersion in this game is insane.

With the imminent release of the long waited and greatly publicized Airborne Update, I wanted to sit down and write a review this morning for Foxhole, with the goal of both sharing my experience with the game and addressing some of the common themes of negative reviews that at first prevented me from purchasing. I have played over a thousand hours in the game now, vastly more than any other game in my library, so I think I am at least somewhat of an reputable source for the game experience. -DO NOT be discouraged by the claims of the Foxhole community being "toxic" or "exclusionary/paranoid" from the very first day in the game I have had great interactions with people on the back and front lines, and now as a seasoned logistics and facility player I do everything I can to help new players learn the intricate details of the game, and I am not alone in this, the vast majority of vets will do the same. Have I had bad experience, toxic experience, experiences that made me want to rage quit, absolutely, but they are very few and very far between, Foxhole is an MMO and like any large player base you will have angels and demons and the rest of us just playing somewhere in between. -DO NOT be discouraged by the people claiming "you can only have fun if you join a massive regiment" or "this game isn't for the solo player". Of my 1.060 hours currently, I would say over a thousand of them have been as an independent, solo player. There is a beauty of soloing Foxhole, you can rapidly fill niches that regiments are going to overlook or take to long to effectively mobilize for, depending on the war and my interests I may be found solo running an Ammo Facility, producing war materials at the factory, or commanding a group of tanks or gunboats. You can find friends within the faction, and enjoy it, even enjoy it more depending on your personality as a solo player. -DO NOT be discouraged by the people that say "you have to slave away to do anything" or "sell your life to the game" there are wars where I make an impact with two hours of total playtime and wars where I make an impact with over a hundred hours of playtime, the game is what you make it. Do some things take a long time to organize, construct, or produce, absolutely that is the beauty of this game the greatest of material achivements involve days of work from organized groups of players, but you can easily make an impact as a logi man or a medic with thirty minutes to spare in your afternoon. -DO NOT be discouraged by those who will say "this game has a high skill cap" or "this game is way too complicated" again the game is as simple as you make it for yourself, as a new player my main recommendation is to ASK FOR HELP, you are not going to know everything within the first few hours of playing, you are likely going to do a massive amount of things in a wrong or at least unoptimized way for the first several play sessions, but there are veterans all around you who are willing to teach you. The complexity of Foxhole is what makes it so amazing to me, I have never played a thousand hours of something before because I get bored with gameplay loops very easily, Foxhole has a thousand niche roles to fill from bmat makers, to watchtower builders, to flank tankers, to combat engineers, and with Airborne there are easily a few hundred more just around the corner. Get stuck in and you might just never get back out. There are many, many more things I could say, but I will leave it there, I promise I can formulate a positive out of every negative for Foxhole, just ask me. If you purchase the game feel free to find me in the war and hang out, I'd love to teach you. My message to you as a prospective solider of the conflict, is to buy the game, hop in and be willing to learn, be positive, and have fun, there's endless fun to be had because that's what it's all about at the end of the day. My only disclaimer for this whole review is I have spent my entire game time as a Warden, but I am sure much the same is true for our misguided Colonial brothers and sisters in arms. -Wildlife, a Jack of All Foxhole Trades and Master of None
