I got this game just to see what it would be like because I usually play games that have really challenging modes or specific timing stuff to work. I really wanted to take a break from mainstream games that have all the violence and break neck speeds. So I found this and was really happy with this type of game. If you like lite puzzles or story/mystery based games this little game is pretty neat. It feels like a short dnd game by yourself which is pretty nice, and the combat is pretty easy so def a good game for little kids getting into games, or people who like short stories and laid back gaming. however if you come in thinking that its a deckbuilding combat focused games about combos and top decking this isn't the game for you. solid game would recommend.

I have a lot more hours of play than what steam knows, because offline play on Steam Deck is not accounted for. An excellent game, original, gorgeous, fun... However, it's not for everyone. If you want a good ending, you need to make the right choices. If you want to make the right choices, you need to make bad choices first to learn. In the end, a complete run is quite long, gets somewhat repetitive despite various welcome mechanisms which help you take shortcuts after a while. At times, it can be hard, punishing. And in the very end, I had to consult a walkthrough because I had gotten everything right except one thing, so just when I thought I had finished it at last, I had to to yet another run. Overall I still think of this game as some kind of masterpiece, and am really looking forward any new game on this principle, maybe with an easier way to jump from a timeline to another, like in visual novels such as 999 which let you skip segments when you already played them with the same parameters.

Story-based deck-builder, with story-based rng . Think "King's Quest" meets "Banner of Ruin" and this is what you get. The game is genuinely fun, and there is a lot to explore. I enjoy trying to figure out alternate or even secret solutions on my own. Def recommend you don't look up spoilers. The game isn't exceptionally difficult. I "beat" it in 7 hours, but got the bad ending. Worth another playthrough

A card-based narrative letting you choose your own path through its story. Foretales puts you in the boots of Volepain, a small-time thief who stumbles into an adventure that sees him try to recover a number of magical artefacts in an effort to avert a world-ending disaster. This leads to you having to make your way through various locations, all the while having to track down acquaintances, make new allies and help out strangers. This journey is presented as a collection of playing cards, each depicting a possible event, with you having to choose which to deal with one after the other, creating a branching path through the game's story. Events come with a time limit, forcing you to choose only a limited amount of them to complete while missing out on certain other ones. Each event completed provides you with certain advantages, which influence the availability of future events as well as the options you have in them, further diversifying the ways things will play out. Starting an event presents you with a location, represented by a number of cards depicting characters or objects. You're also given a number of different resources and a hand of cards drawn from your deck, which you can play to interact with the available location cards, i.e. by using a steal action on an onlooker to gain gold. A location card you interact with is discarded and replaced either with a specific one brought on by the action performed or one drawn randomly from the location's deck. Using this basic system, you're essentially meant to discover certain location cards to end the event, either by depleting the location's deck or by triggering certain interactions, all while managing your various resources. You're given a limited number of cards from your deck to achieve this before the event fails, meaning you have to play your cards strategically. To make this harder, Foretales also feature fights, which see you using your hand cards to damage or otherwise affect enemies, further decreasing the amount of cards you have available as well as the limited health points of your characters, though I rarely found them to be too challenging. Just like the fights, these puzzles rarely felt too challenging, mostly requiring some trial and error to figure out the required interactions. I found exploring the interactions available to you to be probably the most interesting aspect of the game, but also more than once found myself growing quite frustrated as certain interactions just aren't very intuitive and can require quite a bit of luck in regards to card draw. This aspect of exploration sadly also tends to get lost on subsequent playthroughs. The characters mentioned before add different abilities to your deck, thus influencing the options you have available during events. You can enter an event with up to two characters in addition to Volepain, forcing you to make a decision on who's abilities are most likely to benefit you during it. Events may unlock new characters as well as cards for them to use, further expanding your options as you go through them. As for the narrative, Foretales at its core tells a rather benign save the world story, set in a similarly bland medieval world. However, the game also presents some neat mysteries and adds some decent twists and turns throughout its runtime, which did a good job at keeping me interested. This is aided by the way things are written, with banter between characters and even the general narration feeling quite charming. Due to the non-linear nature of the game, you'll need multiple playthroughs to see most of what it has to offer story-wise and to find the game's proper ending. This is explained in-universe in a rather interesting way, with you retaining certain things from previous runs. This helps keep the game fresh, though I still found myself somewhat bored when repeating events I'd already seen and knew the solution to. Foretales also does a great job of presenting all of this through great visual and audio design. While most of the game is visualized just through cards, these are placed in a 3D environment matching the atmosphere of the places you're exploring, which does a great job of immersing you in the game's world. Similarly, every action is accompanied by playful visual effects and meaty audio cues, giving even simple actions a nice weighty feeling. Beyond its sound effects, Foretales also features a fitting if basic soundtrack and a narrator voicing out most of the actions you take as well as story transitions. While I very much enjoyed the charming narration, certain lines became rather annoying when repeatedly using certain actions or on subsequent playthroughs. Overall, I had a good time with Foretales, largely due to its charm, interesting narrative premise and the initial experiences of experimenting with the card gameplay.
