I went in hoping for a more significant "comeback" or a deeper exploration of Florence's personal evolution in the second half of the story. While the ending is grounded and mature, it feels like it wraps up just as it’s gaining momentum. Very short. 100% in 45 minutes. And then, I idled for cards. It's alright, I guess. Story was kinda meh but also a pretty realistic depiction of life. I wouldn't call it sad or bittersweet, though. Okay for the dollar I paid; wouldn't pay more than that, really. Well, I don't dislike it, so it's a YES. I guess it's good for those looking for a quick 30-min calming distraction. But maybe only 6/10. (more so because it was a pretty game, and it gave me 100% achievement in such a short time.)
We need more 1-hour no effort games like this. Florence is designed in a way which allows anyone to be able to "play". Even though the story is very simple, they succesfully deliver it smooth enough that you don't ever get bored. Your subconscious is trying to make connections with Florence's life and we all do have similarities. And therefore it touches you in different ways. Looking at the sketches, I can see that there is a real effort behind the game. The Devs have surely made a good job with their first title. Lastly, Call your mom while she's still alive. Life gets messy and we forget.
I... I never knew. I mean, I kinda knew, I've always heard of this game, but!! I didn't know!! But it's maybe for the better. I'm playing this game while being almost exactly the age of the protagonist, thus her experiences were very relatable. Yet, all I can think about having finished it is... I gotta get out and live. I have to go out and live.
This a very interesting game to bring up when tackling the "video games are art" subject. Traditional video games definitely are just that (art), although it may not always be obvious to an onlooker. Florence shows that video games can also be something akin to an interactive painting or a piece of music; a short jolt of emotion enhanced by your participation in the process - something resembling traditional art more closely. Still, every medium has it's own unique ways on conveying meaning that cannot be replicated elsewhere (for example how comic books frame panels, how books use word-play etc.). Florence shows video games also have their unique and surprisingly effective tricks to invoke emotion and substance no other form can replicate. So treat Florence as what it is - a very short and fleeting but poignant experience, and you will not be disappointed.
