I am going to approach this review outside of my normal style and give you more of my raw experiences with it after reaching the end game. What honestly holds this game back besides some design choices truly is the price tag. So I would recommend this game on a deep sale. Let me go into a few details as to what worked for me and what did not. The Story The story, while not extremely deep, was overall enjoyable. I really like the main character Nor and their Fox-like sidekick Enki. The voice work for both characters was very well done, especially Enki. The conversations and remarks were not overdone or constant but just inserted at the right moments to further the narrative along. So you play as Nor, part of the Coalition army, who has taken it upon herself to stop the Gods and their armies of dead from destroying what is left of the city of Dawn along with Enki, who has his own personal reason for helping you destroy them. Gameplay and Progression Technically the game played well for me, no crashing and no bugs causing any quest progression. What stood out to me as a definite frustration was the progression system. Reputation is this game's currency but also its xp. It is earned from not getting hit in combat, rewarded for quest completions or playing and winning hands of Sebo). With everything pulling from the same currency pool (and things are expensive) you have to choose between upgrades to this or that and cosmetics. I spent some reputation on cosmetics and I would have loved to collect them all but reputation is not earned easily. You also require crafting materials to upgrade your weapons (which is also scarce). Also in a game that is open world I would really like to understand why developers do not fill the world with interesting things to find like rare loot and currency. I want to be rewarded for my time and effort in going into areas that are off the beaten path. Loot in general does not fall from enemies, it is rewarded for quest completions, killing bosses and freeing hamlets and bandit camps. I rarely found any weapons or gear out in the wild for my efforts in looking. Also you cannot buy gear or weapons (it is all earned). The only thing to purchase in-game with in-game currency is cosmetics. There is a mini game called Sebo. Think this game’s version of Gwent but not as fun. In the beginning I played it to gain reputation. But it gets old fast. And the only reward is reputation, no special loot. And each game has two stages. You start off attacking and then defending when it is your opponent’s turn. If you fail one stage you have to start all over again. You can collect special coins you can use in the game as you progress (found at wells in the world) that mix up gameplay. Opponents you meet will vary in their difficulty as you progress. Music & Audio The music in this game is well done. I really enjoyed the soundtrack. But the audio… oh my (credit to hearing George Takei’s voice). It is pretty bad at times. I heard conversations between settler npc’s long after passing them by in a hamlet. I would be entering a fight and hearing a conversation that I overheard miles back. Audio in this game is definitely a low point. But the voice work was on point. As I mentioned above Enki and Nor were voiced really well. Their conversations are full of emotion and intelligence. Enki had some interesting insights into humans as well. So shouting out a job well done to the voice actors who voiced Nor and Enki (Olive Gray & Alistair Petrie). Combat & Traversal I really liked the combat personally in this game. Parrying could be a bit rough but dodging, running, and flying through the rifts was enjoyable. It is your typical formula for a souls lite game but not as polished as say Lies of P or the Dark Souls series. The main boss fights do have multiple stages and the majority of enemies you meet in the world do get a bit repetitive and samey after a few hours but still provided a challenge for me (especially the archers in higher ground). There is a lot of platforming in this game. I have heard others say it feels off and floaty. Myself I had no real issues with double jumping or reaching longer ledges. I did not get frustrated at any point with not being able to do a jump or climb a ledge. I also enjoyed sliding down the odd spot like I was surfing then to double jump at the end to a ledge. Flying though the rifts once you unlock them is fun. Some offer a means of quick traversal out or into an area and some are for getting to secret locations to find a health shrine or chest. Visuals Visually I loved this game and it is what sucked me in to try it besides an interest in the main characters. I love the idea of fox-like God as a sidekick. Photo mode is a great addition to this game and I used it a lot to capture some great screenshots. I will share a few below. I did not care for the filters and all images are just in-game naturally how they look. The filters are nothing special or varied (your usual sepia, black and white etc.). You can choose to have frames or not, and play with the depth of field. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3294886378 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3294886198 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3294887290 Overall Overall this game is an enjoyable experience with a price tag that is too steep for what it is. I recommend it on a deep sale. I did not purchase the dlc (cosmetic pack) so I cannot comment on that. However the in-game cosmetics were nice, I found some pieces I liked. I had a good time and enjoyed the story and the game’s conclusion left me on a high note. ✨
