The best arcade game in the combat racing genre and here's why. Firstly - Graphics. To be fair, it's already a bit dated. Interface with low resolution, low-polygonal textures. You can see that the game is far from new. Nonetheless, the picture is pleasing to the eye and fully copes with immersion into the world of destruction of FlatOut 2. What the visuals do well is the effects. That inexpressible feeling of slamming an opponent's car into the wall at full speed is incredibly satisfying, just because of the large number of effects, particles and sounds. The deafening sound of impact, a heap of sparks, small particles of car body and broken glass flying in all directions, all this perfectly conveys the feeling of impact. The consequences of any impacts are perfectly dealt with by the elaborate damage system. The car body crumples exactly where you were hit, various parts fall off, up to the loss of a wheel. The physics are also very good. Compared to the original first game, it has been changed in the direction of more arcade, thus the game has become more dynamic, while maintaining the feeling that you are driving a car, not a toy. Another unique feature of FlatOut 2 is the individuals you'll be racing against. Your opponents are not just nameless cars. Each opponent has a car with its own coloring and a personality with a certain character, which manifests itself in every race and derby. They also have an avatar with a unique appearance that constantly appears when you are near it. In this way you become emotionally attached to your opponents, winning a race or even destroying them becomes something personal. For example, Jack Benton on his yellow, fast car who constantly avoids collisions with other drivers and takes the first places. Frank Malcov in his heavy car, who always rams everyone. Even in the derby, when left one-on-one with him, instead of destroying the player, he keeps ramming the already destroyed cars of the opponents. There was also a moment in the race when Ray Carter, who usually finishes in last places, suddenly moved up to first place. How hard I laughed when, at the next turn, he failed to control and crashed into a pole. That's what Ray's all about. It's just mind-blowing that a game with no story or cut-scenes, reveals the characters of the rivals through gameplay so well. I don't just want to come first in a race like in other racing games. I want to beat Sofia Martinez, who I'm sick of losing to. Speaking of the main campaign. The career consists of three classes of cars: Derby, Race and Street. Each car has its own characteristics and is handling differently. Each class has a certain number of Cups - small tournaments involving from 2 to 6 races on different tracks. Depending on the place in the race, each racer is awarded points. Accordingly, they determine the final places in the Cup. This system allows the player not to take the first place every time and contributes to the main subject of the game, which I will describe a bit below. By the way, about the tracks. Each race takes place on a specific map with different track routes. Different maps show different locations. From forests and fields to city roads and race tracks. All tracks are filled with a huge number of destructible objects that fit perfectly into the entourage of the location. And finally, FlatOut 2's main subject is DESTRUCTION. Why is this the main subject? Because every aspect of the game stimulates you to do so: 1. Cup system, which allows you to not take the first places in races. Thus, the game gives you time to enjoy ramming your opponents. 2. From collisions and destruction of surrounding objects on the track, you get nitro, with which you can either catch up with the leaders and finish in a high place, or continue to smash the rivals' cars and have fun. It turns out to be a kind of a vicious circle of fun gameplay. 3. Economy of the game, which depends entirely on the number of rammed cars of your opponents. More rams - more money. 4. Ingeniously selected, divine music that suits the game 1000%. Listening to the tracks in the game, you just want to press the gas harder and destroy everything. All of the things I've described above make FlatOut 2 a cocktail of the finest automobile madness. And the cherry on top of it is the FlatOut series' speciality - the driver flying out through the windshield. The driver stunts, make a great addition to the gameplay career. FlatOut 2 gives incredible emotions every minute of gameplay. Every race is accompanied by absolute fun. That's why I love it so much. It will always be my all time favorite game.

I just love when developers randomly update their game 20 years later. Even though itā€™s so old, it plays perfectly now -better than many racing games of today. I donā€™t think any other derby game has felt better since then. The combination of great visual effects, sounds, and UI while crashing into other cars still hasn't been topped imo - even by the same developers Wreckfest. Those nitro and health animation bars are forever engraved in my brain. And the music in this game? It's something else. With all the NFS Unbound`s, I kind of forgot what good, fitting racing music feels like. The only downside to this game is that it can get repetitive after the first half, but other than that, itā€™s just peak gameplay. What better time to try it (or revisit) than after its latest update, which added so much good content? Also, keep in mind that thereā€™s an improved version of this game called FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage. I didnā€™t know about it when I picked this one up, so at least check it out. It improves on many aspects, but the music is different, and thereā€™s no piss filter - so, big no from me šŸ˜”

An update to fix the multiplayer for 18 years old racing game, also adding trading cards, points shop items and Steam Deck support? Might be the best dev I've ever seen.

Game is from 2006, yet is still being updated in 2024 now with both workshop support and steam deck support, and just got its multiplayer back that was once obsolete thanks to "Gamespy" shutting down. Insane work here More developers should follow in these footsteps. This is game preservation at its finest, and its nice to finally see a dev actually put some effort into their classics.

FlatOut 2 is the pinnacle of car destruction games. This game is the reason why my arrow and Ctrl keys are worn: it is infinitely replayable. Crashing against opponents and sending them flying while doing flips never gets old. It's genuinely impressive to watch car parts, scenery objects and even people launched through their windshields all fly on screen at once, it's such an adrenaline rush! FO2 also influences music tastes: I'm personally a metalhead partly thanks to it. Symphony of Destruction from Megadeth suddenly blasting on my low end laptop impressed my younger self, for sure! The soundtrack is so memorable that I was once driving my real life car, and as I passed a stretch of road close to where I live, I saw two cars that had crashed, their bumpers hanging, bent chassis and slanted wheels. I jokingly sung to myself "And I can feel you breathing, and it's keeping me awake!!!", lyrics from the song "Breathing" of the band Yellowcard. I was also sent through a rabbit hole of car crash videos on YouTube and real life derby event videos once, due to having played this game so extensively. The cast of characters is memorable, despite their presentation being nothing more than a name and a mugshot. Not a single word is said by anyone, yet everyone has a distinct personality. They have their own quirks and driving techniques. Frank Malcov is basically the final boss in Derby matches, and Sofia Martinez is the speedster who avoids crashes. Jack Benton will also make your life harder. Ray Carter is the dumbass that's always in last place, occasionally getting stuck in scenery. There's also cool stunts, which are minigames where we launch our driver character through the windshield, in order to hit something or fly somewhere. It's mostly a physics based concept. Some can get very challenging to get high scores in. Not the highlight of the game, but these are hilarious! Highly recommended for anyone that enjoys driving in games, FlatOut 2 is extremely underrated, and unfairly so. It's definitely worth playing!
