required gaming for those who want to get a fish without researching first..... so many people do not understand how much work it is to get a fish and this is a safe foray into the hobby that doesn't require accidental animal abuse

Until breeding comes out, this is a fish hoarding game. :) There's nothing wrong with that, as it is beautiful and full of things to challenge your creativity. The fish really do seem to have personalities. You can collect them for color, species, gender, and certain personality attributes. Some are very social with each other and other species. Some seem designed to live alone. I myself do not like how illnesses are implemented, and if you choose to "disable" them, they are still there. They make me unhappy and remind me of Covid. My favorite fishes are bettas, peacock bass, oscars, danios, golden and cherry barbs. Some fish are awfully hard to get. Getting healthy iridescent catfish sharks and arowannas can take you a very, very long time in the game, and they grow maybe too fast in real time. Between one time looking in and feeding them, and the next, they can go from 6 to 36 inches, making their tanks a special hell! Even if you're willing to take sick ones, it gets a bit frustrating. A game is supposed to frustrate the player a little bit, sometimes. I tend to have too many tanks. Make sure your memory is up for this. I don't mean human memory....

"Fish Game" is a perfect name I think. It sounds like a name I would come up with myself after trying on about a dozen names and deciding they all sounded dumb. It's difficult for me to overstate how much I love this game right now. I've had Fish Game on my wishlist for several months but the discount promo prompted me to look closer at it. I laughed so hard at the video promos that I actually ended up with it in my cart twice. But because I want to encourage the developer to keep up the good work, and I know my brother will get a kick out of this game, I bought both copies anyway. Fish Game has the right balance of fun and simulation, it's fun to watch the fish and see how they interact with each other and the environment as you add elements to your tank. The gameplay is rewarding and entertaining. The music is a bit limited in variety but they're all super catchy tunes and kind of have their own style that really fits. The sound design is fun. The graphics have a good sweet spot between realistic, stylistic, and performance friendly. I really appreciate that there are no micro transactions or currency. I was a bit concerned that the no economy / no currency approach meant no gameplay, but thankfully that is not the case. Instead of being limited by money the game feeds you experience points as you play around with stuff, which you can then use to unlock new features and items. They've designed it in a way that feels evenly paced, rewarding, and not at all overwhelming. Also, you have to acquire everything that goes in your tank at virtual shops that have changing inventory depending on when you "visit" them. You can simply take what you want from the shops' tank and put them in your bag and take them "home". The fish and plants have needs and will interact with your setup in fun and interesting ways. If you decide not to use something you've picked up you just take it back to the shop and put it back in their tank, where it stays until their stock changes again. (Which is one or two in-game weeks I think). I encountered some minor bugs that are sometimes funny, and sometimes frustrating. The most frustrating being that it's really sketchy trying to place grass on surfaces that aren't flat. And I picked up one particular decoration that I couldn't place to save my life because it wouldn't stay above the surface of the substrate. Once I went to a shop and one of the decorations in their tank wasn't scaled properly for the tank (was way way too big) and it clipped through the aquarium walls. There's a somewhat rare graphical glitch where looking through the corner of a tank makes the fish in the corner temporarily look all stretched out and two-dimensional. I have not encountered anything game breaking though, and performance is very steady. I'm looking forward to the additions to the game they've been talking about. Aside from fish breeding, and more varieties of fish and decorations (which I'm sure will be expnded once in a while), having equipment would add a lot of immersion to setting up a tank. Right now there's just a slider to adjust the lighting, and there's no filtration, aeration, or circulation equipment in the game, and I presume no temperature control, but maybe I simply haven't got that far yet. I imagine that kind of development is a really huge undertaking. I would really like to have a way to control the time scale, or maybe automate feeding somehow, because managing multiple tanks feels a little too hectic for what I look for in a game like this. Regardless, I think I'll be watching the development of this one and having a lot of "zen time" playing it.
