Play through edition... mostly.. review score subject to change after most play through. +Very beautiful game +Music is nice +Thankfully ice blocks have infinite uses +Juleston Arch elevator that goes to the embrace. Beautiful views. +/- Cyan breaking promises?. Say it ain't so. -Lack of patch support for textures freaking out in some ground areas. Lazy and cheap. -Performance is very bad unless you use fsr even on high settings dx12/dx11 -Juleston Embrace exploration semi breaks the game without reloading a save before this. If you save after you enter the embrace you are screwed. You can not leave again after taking the elevator up and get the upgrade. Keeps asking for the embrace to start. Well you can leave. Except it's a feature for if you get stuck in textures. The feature will teleport you back to the beginning with the first ice blocks.

What a game! What. A. Game. Been a fan of Cyan games for many, many years since playing Myst way back in the early 90's. They have always produced beautiful, story-rich games, and this is no exception, this game is absolutely stunning! The visuals are absolutely astounding, as one would expect from any Cyan game. Beautifully rendered into a fully realised world that feels real and believable along with a deep and intriguing story with one heck of a twist right at the end... and talking about the end... an astounding track by VNV Nation over the end credits just adds a whole new level of feeling and depth to the overall narrative. Honestly I can't praise this game enough. There were one or two minor glitches when playing in VR, but nothing game-breaking or anything that spoiled the enjoyment of the experience. If this is the quality of any future games by Cyan, I am so excited for whatever comes next. I absolutely LOVE this game!!

Played this game shortly after the remake of Riven because I was hungry for more Cyan, and this gave me exactly that. I enjoyed every bit of the exploration, narrative, and world building without ever getting too stuck or frustrated on a puzzle. The effort that goes into Cyan's world design is on full display here with a detailed steampunk aesthetic, featuring really unique industrial facilities built into large natural landscapes. It's dope.

I held off of playing Firmament because of the mixed reviews, but in the end I enjoyed it much more than Obduction. The feel, the story, and the environments were simply much more to my liking. I particularly found the story very compelling in its build-up and revelations towards the ending, which all felt very original. The puzzles are on the easy side, but very enjoyable in their execution. Cyan still knows how to make machinery with satisfying sound effects! It's as they say, Cyan doesn't make puzzle games, they make exploration games, and Firmament is an excellent example of that. Sometimes their games will have tricky puzzles, sometimes not, I tend to enjoy them regardless. My biggest criticism is that it's a bit on the short side, about an hour or two less than I spent on most of the Myst games.

A solid adventure / puzzle game true to Cyan's design principles. The Myst / Riven DNA is unmistakable. The game looks great in terms of both graphical fidelity and art style. If you remember the original Myst, the rocky island landscapes will feel vaguely familiar (Julestone realm in particular). Mechanical and architectural designs are finely crafted, as expected from Cyan. Attention to details and great use of lighting make some scenes look like pre-renders. Wish I could see it in VR mode. The puzzles are seamlessly integrated into the game world, a hallmark of Riven and later games from the Myst universe. They can take a while to solve and require careful observation and deduction. This is a game for patient players, although I must admit that at one point my patience was tested. If fiddling with strange mechanisms for half-hour stretches does not sound fun, this may not be a game for you. On the other hand, there were genuine "eureca" moments when a solution suddenly struck me after a period of head scratching. Overall, the puzzles had the "right" difficulty -- challenging, but not to the point of forcing me to consult the walkthrough. Some critique can be aimed at storytelling. You only get short, scarce pieces of lore throughout most of the game. Perhaps this is an intentional choice in order to hit the player with a grand revelation at the end. Firmament's greatest problem is the inevitable comparison to Riven which set the bar very high. When compared to its spiritual predecessors, Firmament may seem not as varied, deep, or ambitious. But I still don't get the negativity in the reviews. In the era of braindead games filled with loot boxes and microtransactions, Cyan stayed faithful to their heritage and creative vision. They have yet again created something beautiful and imaginative, and I applaud them for it.
