Completed 3/13/2025 Level of Fail: Avowed Worth price: $8 on sale and nothing higher. Original price is a rip off. +Very beautiful game +Music is nice +Thankfully ice blocks have infinite uses +Juleston Arch elevator that goes to the embrace. Beautiful views. +The crawler was pretty interesting. Should have more of that in the next game. +/- Cyan breaking promises?. Say it ain't so. +/- Background clouds move and yet the sky clouds do not -Lack of patch support for textures freaking out in some ground areas. Lazy and cheap. -Performance is very bad unless you use fsr even on high settings dx12/dx11 -Some very convoluted puzzles -The story is a joke -Voice actor sounds drunk -Cringe voice dialogue moments -The ending is nice and yet very dumb -Having to save often because the game is a giant bugged mess. -Juleston Embrace exploration semi breaks the game without reloading a save before this. If you save after you enter the embrace you are screwed. You can not leave again after taking the elevator up and get the upgrade. Keeps asking for the embrace to start. Well you can leave. Except it's a feature for if you get stuck in textures. The feature will teleport you back to the beginning with the first ice blocks. -Pretty buggy/glitchy throughout the game. Very poorly beta tested for the asking price not on sale. Most of the issues are elevators. If you choose to skip the elevator animations. Most likely the elevator will leave without you. Having to reload because the ladders bug out also.

Wonderful game with a couple clear flaws. Recommended for fans of Cyan's Myst, Riven or Obduction, or fans of similar games like Quern. The good [*] Great puzzles as usual. Like their other games you have to sink in to the puzzles a bit, these aren't panel puzzles. Some of them are quite rewarding. [*] Stunning visuals [*] Good music, but not constant and overwhelming. The bad [*] While the voice acting itself is quite good, the narration is just not well written, and doesn't flow with the game. It's clumsy and gets in the way of the grandeur of the game and makes pacing awkward. I'd have preferred the main story be dropped in diaries or something. Pro tip: The narration is not necessary for the game at all. Shortly after visiting "The Swan" I decided to just mute it and turn off subtitles. I played all the way through to the credits this way (though the ending was very slow due .... A while after finishing, I reloaded a save to hear some of the final narration. Some interesting concepts but I am indeed glad I skipped it the first time though. Massive exposition dump.) The ugly [*] Some of the puzzles are a bit finicky, even buggy. Sometimes have to reload saves or work around things in other ways. I don't expect this from Cyan, especially a couple years after release. [*] Ladders. Fix them. So, my recommendation: mute dialog, hide subtitles, and enjoy this game as if it were another Myst.

A mostly-great puzzle game with a deeply stupid surprise ending. Pros: * Great level design. * Decent voice actor & ambient sounds. * Innovative puzzles. Cons: * Sometimes it's very difficult to spot interaction points w/o running around and holding right-click. * Ending is just plain stupid. (see below) * Show not tell is violated by the very lengthy monologue at the end. (Plus... look, lady, you mind-wiped former-me then angrily rant that you hope I'm upset with what you've done - that was a different person, they're dead. ) Ending spoilers: * Okay, fine, you're on a space ship where gravity in each "realm" is via centripetal force . * To achieve the ending, the realms are merged by rotating them into a single lumpy sphere - which means the realms should be thrown into utter chaos as gravity's axis radically shifts. * Additionally, your "mentor" screwed up a system by effectively killing the (rat-bastard) crew - and then leaving things to lie for a long, long time. Which means that someone should have come to check on the ship, if tech has advanced to the point that you can warp to the destination in ~7 hrs. TL;DR: Good puzzles, but don't expect a good conclusion to the plotline; if that's cool, 8/10; else, 6/10, or avoid.

What a game! What. A. Game. Been a fan of Cyan games for many, many years since playing Myst way back in the early 90's. They have always produced beautiful, story-rich games, and this is no exception, this game is absolutely stunning! The visuals are absolutely astounding, as one would expect from any Cyan game. Beautifully rendered into a fully realised world that feels real and believable along with a deep and intriguing story with one heck of a twist right at the end... and talking about the end... an astounding track by VNV Nation over the end credits just adds a whole new level of feeling and depth to the overall narrative. Honestly I can't praise this game enough. There were one or two minor glitches when playing in VR, but nothing game-breaking or anything that spoiled the enjoyment of the experience. If this is the quality of any future games by Cyan, I am so excited for whatever comes next. I absolutely LOVE this game!!

Played this game shortly after the remake of Riven because I was hungry for more Cyan, and this gave me exactly that. I enjoyed every bit of the exploration, narrative, and world building without ever getting too stuck or frustrated on a puzzle. The effort that goes into Cyan's world design is on full display here with a detailed steampunk aesthetic, featuring really unique industrial facilities built into large natural landscapes. It's dope.
