Never vibed with FF series ever. I even tried FF7 Remake but quickly dipped. Last year I made a resolution to try games outside of my usual normal types, so gave FF7 original a shot after picking it up on sale. If you are reading this , I recommend going in blind as this game will hit you like a truck on all levels be it music, story, characters and even the world itself. Came to complete a resolution, left as a fan, cant wait to try Remake, and Rebirth now that I have played this gem. Do yourself a favor and pick this game up.

Final Fantasy VII isn't a game that will blow anyone away with its dialogue. There's goofiness right around the corner from serious moments. Its models are blocky, dated, and odd. It's a bit convoluted at times. The world is obtuse. And yet, despite all this, the game is incredible. If you've never played a Final Fantasy game, this is perhaps the one to start with. Yes, there is the Remake trilogy, but if you can stomach old games and their sensibilities at least a little bit, I would very much recommend this one. To say it was a leap from VI is an understatement. VI on the SNES was already pushing boundaries with its storytelling and character work, for VII to take that into a 3D environment (using the PS1's tech), nail down most of what made VI work and then expand upon it was nothing short of incredible. Final Fantasy VII only really excels against present day games in one department. The music. The soundtrack is perhaps my favourite in gaming, certainly at least in the top 5. What makes the game special is that nearly everything else is done extremely competently. The gameplay loop won't blow people away, but it is addicting and diverse. The characters are close to a level of nuance, but the game balances its large and varied cast (even the optional party members) in a way that makes it seem effortless. The world is built in a linear fashion — you start out in the most detailed city in the game — but the narrative enhances the story that's filled with great mysteries. And yes, the answers are satisfying. I mentioned the game was goofy before in a negative light, perhaps that was a bit harsh. The goofiness in a lot of these places make its world feel endearing. The casual dialogue with people on the streets is memorable. The light-heartedness mostly serves to have those darker portions hit hard, and hit hard they do. It's all the little things that make the game. The way the handholds shake on the train. The vistas that they didn't have to go as hard as they did for. The wacky enemies. The many minigames. It all adds up to something that surpasses its contemporaries, and hell even a lot of games that come out today. I've rarely been as immersed in a world as I was traipsing through Midgar's lively neon-lit slums, under the giant steel plates of the higher class folk and that great central tower looming over all. On a technical stand point, I would actually recommend using mods. A few of them really take away the dated aspects of the game. I initially played it in 2014 with no mods, and then again during the Pandemic on my PS4. This time, I used the 7th Heaven mod manager (which compared to other games was a cakewalk to use) and it was the best experience I've had with the game yet. Turning the game widescreen, upscaling the backgrounds that were already pretty great, getting a more accurate translation (still without Japanese honorifics, I'm not that much of a weeb), and allowing a speed-up option really enhanced the experience, while still exploring the core of a game the developers designed. I highly, highly recommend adding just a few mods. You don't have to feel bad; they ended up doing models that actually look close to human in FF VIII so it's nice to change it here a few years before the devs did. With Rebirth coming out on PC, and the third game on the horizon, I can only recommend people give this a go. The Remake is fun, but it does some of my favourite moments a bit worse (and some better, to be fair). Older games can be fun, especially because they trusted the player's imagination more. If you need an adventure, this one is waiting for you.

Steam Deck/Controller Configuration Tips! The default button mapping is all messed up in this PC port, so for full enjoyment here's what to do: If playing directly on the Deck, open FFVII to the "PLAY" screen. Tap "SETTINGS" on the touch screen, then go to the JOYSTICK tab. Tap on each input option and press the corresponding button on your Deck to map the controller properly. DO NOT modify the controller configurations inside the game itself (via the party menu where you see your characters faces and the menu options)! Not only will it not fix anything, you could further screw up the controls and make the game literally unplayable. My recommendations for Steam Deck button mappings: OK = A CANCEL = B MENU = Y UP = Stick Up LEFT = Stick Left RIGHT = Stick Right DOWN = Stick Down START = "Hamburger" Button SWITCH = X PAGE UP = L1 PAGE DOWN = R1 TARGET = R3 (Right Stick In) ASSIST = "Two Window" Button CAMERA = L3 (Left Stick In) This will get you pretty close to the original PS1 control scheme, though you could swap the OK and CANCEL mappings if you'd like (some online walkthroughs use this layout). Same mapping logic works for XBox controllers. Don't forget that STEAM + X brings up the onscreen keyboard, which you will need to use to start the game. When it boots up, open the keyboard and input the X key (not the X button). This will bring you to file select, where you can play "normally" with a controller. ------- With that out of the way, I'll just say this port obviously has issues. The default controller mapping is already bad enough, but also the in-game button icons are their nonsensical designations (PAGE UP, SWITCH, ASSIST, etc) instead of "A" or "B". Thus you really need to understand which designation belongs to which controller button or else you'll have a bad time. And I do recommend playing on a controller over KB&M. But beyond that, I had no performance issues and was able to play as much as four hours straight on a single battery charge. My quick two cents on FFVII as a game: it's worth playing if you haven't already and want a nostalgia trip. It's GOATed for a reason. That said, it's not my favorite of the mainline games (that would be X) but it's definitely up there. One last comment: the Steam Achievements are different from the Playstation Trophies for some reason. Not sure why they did this, but be warned. It took me roughly 65 hours following a walkthrough to get every achievement.

It has been over 20 years since I played this game for the first time, I have always wanted to go back and replay it, after many attempts over the years I always seem to put it to the way side while life gets in the way, not sure why but I recently turned 40 and I thought it was a good time to give it another serious attempt. Oh boy, I tell you what, I am so glad I did! Final Fantasy Remake was a good game but just didn't hit me like this original version. The nostalgia is off the charts and I am having so much fun, its currently 4am, I have no work tomorrow and I just finished breeding the Golden Chocobo and got the Knights of the Round summon. I cannot think of the last time I have stayed up all night playing a game like this, just like when we were kids when this came out and we stayed up all night getting the Knights of The Round. It has just brought me so much joy to relive it. Okay nostalgic ramblings aside, this is still a very good game, the story is interesting, if not a little bit strange, the characters are so memorable, the music is great, the game really was ahead of its time, I would say it has a lot of things we take for granted in modern games that this was pioneering. For example being able to use vehicles to traverse the world, there is a buggy, boat (kinda) an airship and chocobos. Difficulty wise its not really that hard for any one accustomed to any of the more modern FF games, its just a bit convoluted in parts and in my opinion there is no harm in using a guide to help you through it. The combat might turn some players off, personally I prefer it to the new games just something charming about turn based combat, with cool spells and awesome summons. The graphics, now this is where people are going to be turned off almost immediately. Without mods it is UGLY as sin on a modern display, I would say almost unplayable. There is hope however, I utilized the 7th Heaven Mod Manager, it comes with all the mods you need in its catalog just search for which mods to install on Google and OMG this looks like a brand new game, the modders have done an absolutely OUTSTANDING job bringing this game into the 21st Century honestly it has to be seen to be believed, even the cut scenes have been revamped and everything looks outstanding. Okay, well if you have read my review which I doubt anyone actually will, thanks and if you have never played FFVII before please give it a go and make sure you include 7th Heaven visual mods have a great time, I hope you love this game as much I do.
