After finishing FFIX I completely understand why so many people consider this one of the best FF games. It’s also a game that frustrated me repeatedly. And somehow both of those things are true at the same time. At first glance, FFIX feels almost deceptively light compared to FFVII and FFVIII. Where those games leaned into dystopian sci-fi, moody protagonists, and a more serious tone, IX opens like a storybook. Cartoonish characters, medieval fantasy cities, theater performances and airships. It almost feels childish. That’s the trick. FFIX uses that aesthetic as a Trojan horse. It invites you in with warmth and charm, then slowly starts asking much heavier questions about identity, mortality, purpose, grief, and what people choose to do with the limited time they have. And it absolutely lands those themes. The emotional core of this game is its cast, and Vivi might genuinely be one of the best characters in the entire franchise. Watching this tiny, awkward black mage try to understand what he is and why he exists is devastating in the best possible way. His arc gives the entire game its soul. Zidane was also a huge breath of fresh air after Cloud and Squall. Instead of another emotionally unavailable protagonist, you get someone charismatic, empathetic, impulsive, and genuinely fun to be around. Which makes his own late-game existential breakdown hit much harder than I expected. Steiner’s transformation is fantastic, and his dynamic with Vivi is consistently great. Garnet avoids becoming the stereotypical helpless princess, with some surprisingly grounded emotional storytelling, especially around trauma. Kuja also deserves credit. At first, he feels dangerously close to being another Sephiroth clone: flamboyant, theatrical, dramatic, absurdly pretty. But he becomes much more compelling once the game reveals what really drives him. The Active Time Event system it’s one of the smartest storytelling systems in the game because it makes the cast feel like actual people instead of silent backpack decorations by showing what they are doing outside of the main narrative. Now, mechanically is where the game starts losing points. The combat systems themselves are good. FFIX fully commits to classic RPG roles again, which I loved after the more open-ended systems of VII and VIII. Characters feel distinct. Party composition matters. Equipment matters. Learning abilities through gear is one of the best progression systems in the series because suddenly every weapon, armor piece, and accessory has meaning beyond raw stats. Synthesis is also fantastic, rewarding hoarding in a way that feels incredibly satisfying. But dear god, the pacing. Battles are painfully slow. Random encounters take forever to start thanks to dramatic camera sweeps and transitions. Combat itself often pauses awkwardly between actions like the game is taking a coffee break to think about what happens next. By late game, backtracking becomes less about exploration and more about testing your patience. Then there’s stealing. Since Zidane is a thief and bosses often carry excellent gear, many fights become a miserable ritual where you intentionally keep dangerous bosses alive while repeatedly attempting to steal items before you actually engage with the battle. This adds strategy in theory, but in practice often just creates frustration. And then there’s Trance. This may genuinely be the worst limit break system I’ve seen in a FF game so far. Because it activates automatically when the meter fills, the game constantly wastes your powered-up transformation on random trash fights you didn’t care about. No control, no strategy, just vibes and disappointment. The soundtrack is phenomenal and emotional. It’s warm when it needs to be, melancholic when it hurts, triumphant when it matters. TL;DR: A beautiful, emotionally rich Final Fantasy with one of the best casts in the franchise, incredible themes and fantastic progression systems, but held back by painfully slow combat pacing, frustrating steal mechanics, and a terrible Trance system. 8/10. For me, it lands above VIII and lives right alongside VII, as my favorite Final Fantasy so far depending on my mood.

A Final Fantasy IX Retrospective FFIX was always one of my favorites growing up and re-playing it now with the help of mods to bring the game up to modern standards, was an absolute 10/10 experience. With the Memoria Launcher and Moguri Mod, the game is essentially re-mastered and is highly recommended. Some mods I used alongside Moguri were: Portraits Pack, 30fps videos, PlayStation Sounds, Kupo UI Suite, and Cursors Mod. All of these can be directly installed with a couple clicks from Memoria Launcher which makes it nice and easy. With 80+ hours of playtime I only had 3 crashes. And because I prefer to save often it wasn't a big deal. Pro tip for playing with Memoria Launcher: In the Advanced Settings, turn "New Audio Engine" OFF. This setting will devour your RAM and CPU usage if left on. Nothing else to say really. This game is a masterpiece.

My thoughts reflect the experience of playing this game with the Moguri Mod (9.0) on the Steam Deck. To newcomers: Final Fantasy IX is every bit as good as the reputation it has. If you're new to the series entirely, I think 9 is actually the best place to start. It wholly encompasses everything great about this series. If you've played other FFs before and haven't played 9, its never too late to experience one of it's crowning achievements. The world immediately draws you in with its presentation. The PS1 era pre-rendered backgrounds look absolutely amazing with the Moguri Mod. Each new screen through to the end of the game was a visual treat. The character designs/models are phenomenal. There's so much personality in the animations, it's hard not to fall in love. And last but not least the music. I could listen to the overworld theme "Over the Hill" literally forever and it wouldn't get old. Melodies of Life is an incredible song and the way it's motif gets used throughout the game will make you want to worship Nobuo Uematsu (as if he didn't already deserve worship). The gameplay will have you explore small JRPG towns talking to NPCs and learning more about the world and the events of the story. Exploring every room and alley looking for hidden items. There's an overworld as well; as the story opens up, you're able to traverse the world more and more and revisiting old places (and finding new ones) become even more rewarding. Battles are turn based and each character grows to fill a role within your 4-man lineup (white mage, black mage, warrior, summoner etc). Each character can equip passive or active abilities using a limited resource and said abilities are learned by using different equipment. It's fairly "standard" jrpg stuff at this point but its done so well that I have little complaints. The challenge in the gameplay comes from figuring out the weaknesses and attacks/statuses the bosses/enemies will dish out and equipping the right abilities in your party to be ready. Personally, the Materia system in FF7 still reigns king, but 9 is still extremely rewarding with its gameplay loop. Finally, the story of FF9, it's magical. Sometimes it feels like a play and other times a fairy tale. Towards the end it gets a little out there but that's okay. The driving force behind its memorable story is the exceptional cast. Most of them get a really beautiful arc throughout the game. The growth that some of these characters go through might even make you cry. As with most FFs (and honestly most JRPGs with large cast sizes), not all the characters have equal amounts of story or character development. But even for those characters, what is there is probably going to be enough for you to still fall in love with them (all the while wishing they had more screentime). The message this game has and the way it's told through its characters is the reason it's so beloved and why it will continue to be timeless. You'll see a little bit of yourself in all the characters and their growth will make you become introspective about your own. And at the end of the day, we can all be a bit more like Zidane and Vivi. "You don't need a reason to help people". "You taught me that life doesn't last forever. That's why we have to help each other and live life to the fullest." To existing fans: If you've been looking for an excuse to replay this game (I mean it is the 25th anniversary after all), play it with the Moguri Mod. It is spectacular. Tons of QOL like toggling game speed (which doesn't mess with in-game timers or the music btw), toggling random encounters, 100% steal rate, on-the-fly party swapping, controllable trance etc etc. There's even a cheat to let you get Excalibur 2 without needing to speedrun the game. The game looks gorgeous; you get a couple of options for the in-game character models too. I personally loved Toons+Outline which gave them a cell shaded look that just popped with all the beautiful backgrounds - specially on the Steam Deck oled screen. If you're like me and have limited time in in your adult life, playing games that waste your time is basically unacceptable. Which is why I can really recommend this mod. I put in about 80 hours and none of it was tedium. You can disable the long battle intros, you can speed up the game to make those runbacks to feed the moogle kupo nuts painless, you can just outright replace tetra master with triple triad. I mean its all great, but it will make playing the original impossible. But that's fine because this exists, you essentially have the perfect way to play this game in modern times; don't have to wait for Square to ♥♥♥♥ it up with a remake (they're not gonna remake it anyway).

Everyone has a favorite Final Fantasy game, and this is mine. I played this for the first time when I was a teen going through hardships and struggles that I found reflected in this game and some of its characters, it will forever hold a special place in my heart. The game itself is a turned based JRPG with unforgettable characters, challenging battles, fun puzzles and side quests, killer cutscenes and banging music (I highly recommend hanging out in a certain hidden village in later in the game, it's an absolute BOP) It is a fairly long game, having originally spanned across 4 discs on PS1 with the main story quest as well as numerous smaller side quests, and for the most part the Steam version is faithful to the experience. Gameplay is enhanced with the addition of some helpful and fun features like speeding up overworld/battles, turning off random encounters, and godmode. For those interested, Moguri Mod is an incredible fan-made tool that opens up so much more of the game with graphical overhauls & customizations including, but not limited to, playable characters and their appearances. There's a ton of new ways to play this classic with Moguri and I edited this review upon realizing I neglected to include it. I will never not encourage people who have never played this to try it, maybe it will end up being your favorite Final Fantasy too. If it does, DEFINITELY try another playthrough with Moguri. Just don't expect to be Jump Rope King right away 😂
