Playing this game gave me some nice nostalgic feelings because it has been many years since I played the original version for the NES. But would I recommend playing this game if you have never played Final Fantasy I? It depends. If you’re a Final Fantasy fan, I would certainly give it a try. Playing through the game that started it all is an interesting experience, and on several occasions, you’ll say to yourself, “Wow, this was already in the first game?!” This version also comes with several gameplay improvements that smooth out some of the rough edges and frustrations older JRPGs tend to have, notably the ability to turn off random encounters and the map system. However, if you are an RPG fan with no strong connection to the Final Fantasy franchise, I would not recommend it, especially if you have limited time to play games. Despite the technical and gameplay improvements, the main problem is that the story is very weak, and character personalities are non-existent. Final Fantasy I was amazing for its time, but compared to modern RPGs, including later Final Fantasy games, it does show its age. I wish Steam had a neutral option, but I’ll give it a thumbs up since I did enjoy playing it.

An excellent remaster of the first final fantasy game. Perfect for getting new players although veterans beware, the game is much easier then the NES release. This may be disappointing to many but there are mods online to bring it more in line with the original. But for new players to the game, this is the best version. While many encounters are much easier I find this more of a boon then burden, after a while the encounters and grinding do get dull and the easier difficulty means you spend less time farming mobs to survive your first run into the Marsh Cave and more time making progress. The updated graphics are phenomenal, and the final boss is a surprising challenge that really ends the game off like a nice ribbon on a present!

The bridge grind for Warmech took 1/3 of my playtime. The battle with Warmech took two turns. 10/10 recommend.

This game is super simple in comparison to games released nowadays but that in of itself is one of the main parts of its charm. At first you don't expect the game to hit you like it does but after a while you start to want to know what the next town looks like--what the next dungeon or boss is and even what items you will be able to supply your party next. With every growing difficulty caps this game is awesome for the amount of time you are able to spend on it whilst maintaining the charm of the original. I would recommend for anyone looking for a simple classic RPG experience!

My curiosity nudged me to try out the first FF game, being the origin of a world known legendary saga. The whole background, about it being the last hope from the devs, a final attempt to reach success in the gaming industry, enhanced my inner inquisitiveness. How would that game that triggered this big success be? I of course, played it with the fact that it is a 1987 game. Still, I do think that even in today's standard it is a very agreeable game to playthrough, even if being roughly 10 hours of gameplay if you know what to do and where to go. The first noticeable thing is how smooth the leveling system is. You truly feel each of your level, and how your characters become stronger. I think the game design is smartly done, putting every useful item on your path. The towns feel lively and useful, bringing their dose of lore, dialogues that hint at the next thing to do, but also the shops bring relevant items to prepare for the next dungeon. I must say I felt like the game leaned heavily toward physical jobs though, as your spells are rather limited and you keep them for bosses. The beastiary is quite epic, with entries mostly coming from mythology, specifically greek one. It gives a rather epic sensation, fighting elementals, dragons, fiends and legendary monsters (if you like mythology). Something that is less present in future FF games. The game has a good rythm (unless you get lost), character progression that feels very rewarding, and an epic atmosphere. Now speaking specifically of the Pixel Remaster... The auto battle feature is amazing, makes the grinding sessions a breeze, if you wanna grind. Gils obtained from the puzzle minigames have been removed, preventing the breaking of the game by getting an absurd amount of gils at start. Music remixes are great and I'm not sure what else changed from the original, but these are generally great game design changes. If you want to explore the origin of this legendary saga, in an addictive gameplay, discovering the origins of iconic locations and characters, Matoya, Mt.Gulg, and more... You shan't hesitate any further.
