June 2025
It's not easy to follow up on a shooter as outstanding as FEAR. Monolith took some risks to make FEAR 2 stand out, and while most succeeded, it still left a divisive feeling among fans. FEAR 2 is a great shooter by itself and a good sequel to FEAR, but it doesn't match the peaks of the original or its expansion packs. Set both during and after the events of the first game, FEAR 2 puts you in the boots of Delta Force Sergeant Michael Beckett. As part of the Delta Force squad "Dark Signal," Beckett attempts to capture a high-ranking Armacham official responsible for the disaster at Fairport. The operation gets complicated when the ATC's mercenaries try to kill everyone involved, forcing Beckett and his team to ally with the few Armacham employees working against the Corporation's lethal cover-up. Things only escalate when Alma Wade, a powerful psychic spirit, unleashes paranormal phenomena and hordes of cloned Replica Soldiers on the already-ruined city. Armed with the power to slow down time, Beckett and his team battle against man-made horrors beyond anyone's comprehension. If the first FEAR was a time capsule from 2005, then FEAR 2 feels like a proper representation of 2009-era futurism. The setting appears more futuristic despite supposedly taking place in tandem with the first game, from the guns to enemy designs to visual aspects. Plenty of neon blues and oranges make up the game's color palette. You still use medkits to heal yourself and armor to lessen damage taken, though you can regenerate a small amount of health when critically injured. You can no longer lean around corners, but you can carry 4 weapons and 4 grenade types this time. You aim properly down sights when zoomed in, and more weapons have scopes to allow for easier target acquisition. The usual gunplay is broken up by intense moments of horror, a few turret sections, and a couple of chances to pilot Replica Powered Armor. FEAR 2 uses a similar AI system to the first game, but its earlier levels don't give it many chances to shine. The cramped hospital and lab corridors limit chances for enemies to maneuver or outsmart you. Fortunately, the levels are much more accommodating from the end of Interval 02 onward. Both ATC and Replica enemies will use crafty and resourceful strategies to fight you. They will knock over objects to use as cover, crawl under obstacles, send in heavier units to flush you out, and report losses back to their commanders. They still flank when environments permit, and they aren't afraid to use grenades on you, but they no longer notice your flashlight. Due to the faster pace of FEAR 2's combat, they don't always get the chance to showcase their strategies before you kill them - at least, in the initial levels. FEAR 2's arsenal is as colorful and diverse as the first game's, though it has some downgrades. The Pistol can't be dual-wielded and does middling damage against most enemies. Both shotguns are powerful at point blank, but their damage falters outside of close encounters. Fortunately, classics like the Penetrator spike launcher return with no nerfs. The additional grenade types can ignite targets or electrocute foes, the former being great for crowd control and the latter neutralizing mechanical enemies effectively. As if to compensate for the shotgun nerfs, FEAR 2's Sniper Rifle takes its place as the most fun weapon in the game. Its bullets gib most enemies in a single shot, its animations are smooth and stylish, and its lack of a crosshair lets you pull off trickshots like it's 2009 all over again. FEAR 2's story goes in pretty unexpected directions, but it maintains a unique pre-apocalyptic tone throughout the campaign. Things feel poised to fall apart at any time, and you keep waiting for some new disaster to strike. As vengeful spirits and cloned soldiers do battle against corporate mercenaries, it's hard not to feel like the in-game world is on the brink of collapse. It isn't a hopeless setting, and the game does have some awesome moments set to chest-thumping music. Even knowing some aspects of the plot, FEAR 2 still found ways to shock me and spook me. FEAR 2's multiplayer, like the first game's, doesn't work due to it being connected to GameSpy. However, community fixes exist to let you play online again. I didn't buy the game for the MP mode, but the videos I saw of the ATC vs Replica matches looked fun enough. You could always use Steam Groups to organize matches or see who all plays it these days. FEAR 2 isn't a perfect sequel, and it is a step down from the first game in some ways. It was made a little more casual to fit the console market better, which shows in the removal of the lean feature and reduced scope of some levels. However, a step down from an excellent game is still a great game. I enjoyed FEAR 2 for trying its own thing while maintaining the first game's identity. If you're craving more FEAR, I would recommend grabbing it on sale. Just don't go into this expecting a 1-for-1 follow-up to the original.

I don't get the negative reviews. Yes the AI is dumber and yes the horror feels undercooked but it's a super solid shooter with great level design, awesome gunplay, non-stop action and perfect use of bullet time. Highly recommended.

A decent fps back in day it's not a bad game compare it's time first the AI in game are amazing, which they would hide in cover and flank you, they even evade to your grenade this game AI win most of the modern fps that they can't beat Fear 2 AI. there a huge improvement compare to fear 1 but in tiny thing, flashlight infinite which is a nice thing, auto save without manual save, auto save without manual save, the gun graphic is improve much more. the weapons part, the module from like xm8 assault rife, P90 smg gun and Jackhammer auto shotgun, the weapons had balance issue and it difficult to swap weapons slot once you accident swap the weapon slot then meaning rest of game the weapons are in wrong slot. however the not scary at all campaign, compare it with dead space you would see different, Fear 2 is not a bad game but really lack a lot of improve space.
