I've never really played the Far Cry series. But holy shit I'd be lying if I said I didn't find this difficult. I just managed to complete the game on the Realistic difficulty at the time of writing this review, so that is a testament to my skill (or lack thereof). Nevertheless, I enjoyed it a ton. The gunplay is solid, with a nice variety of weapons. The movement of the game is pretty slow though, and it is very noticeable in the expansive areas. The movement speed also depends on the weapon you are currently holding, so equiping the pistol or the machete provides maximum traversing speed. Considering how useless the machete is on Realistic difficulty, I always carried a pistol as it surprisingly held up well till end game. The only time I unequipped it was during the final horde battle against the Trigens and subsequently, Doyle's henchmen. That section was a literal nightmare though, and not in the good way. Although not as reactive as Crysis 1, the 'open world' areas do highlight Crytek's strengths very well. There are multiple pathways to the objectives in most cases and more often than not, attempts at ingenuity are rewarded with quicker progress through the areas. But such rewards are generally limited to traversing. When the game enters the closed spaces, it doesn't lose its charm. Although there are way fewer opportunities to play 'differently'. Enemy types are fairly generic, not in the negative way. The standard human enemies and the monstrosities which Crytek really seem to love in their games. But I always felt Crytek's monster gameplay a bit damp compared to the human enemies. Although the Crysis series were serviceable with their Cephs, especially during the 3rd instalment (which was a buggy disaster otherwise, for me) - FarCry's Trigens were an overall negative experience. But it doesn't take away too much from the enjoyment, considering they are only abundant during the last 5-ish missions iirc. So taking into the account that the game was pretty long for me, it is fine overall. Story did feel aged. Especially with the protagonist's wise-guy attitude. It might be a personal thing, but Jack Carver had...too much personality? Val is quite hot in all her polygonal glory and is a surprisingly adept companion in the 1.5 missions we play with her. The antagonists are ho-hum and that's fine since story doesn't seem to be the main focus of the game. Overall, a very good and challenging experience. Nevertheless, I would not recommend playing it in Realistic difficulty setting for casuals like me. This is one of the few games where you should believe the warning the game displays when you try to chose the highest difficulty setting.

FC1 the enemy will engage you beyond the render distance if you're in the open. This is what happens when enemies are actually aware of how much of a threat the main character poses.

I was led to believe that Far Cry was nothing more than a tech demo that got old by its second level. Led further to believe that there was nothing of value in this game that no game has done better before. I heartily disagree. Far Cry has some of the most unique combat I've ever played in an fps to this day. I don't play many linear fps games that use long-range engagement as its main gameplay loop. Even newer Far Cry games push you to push on bases aggressively. It wants you to take your time with it and not twitch-shoot, which is probably why the newer fans discredit it as much as they do. It's a novel take on the genre that I quite love. The setting is frankly mind-blowing still today. It gives of this dreamy and hazy quality with its verdant valleys and shining islands. But when the game is not focused on lush jungles and its core combat loop the design comes across as very amateurish. The one trick this game loves to do in half of its linear levels is to fill a room with high damage AoE enemies. The final level of the game is this bumped to 11 with 6 rocket launcher mutants and 4 marksman mutants. I cannot fathom why they decided that was a good idea, but its 20 years too late to change that. And yes I said mutants, to those unaware, Far Cry wasn't always bleak warzones or liberation vacations, this is a bog standard sci-fi fps story. It is carried however by its hammy performances and characters. Jack Carver and the mercenaries scattered through the island have one liners that deserve to be kept next to Resident Evil's in terms of cheese. It got a few laughs out of me. I insist that any fan of the series gives it a shot once. It is vastly different from its successors, yet it still deserves to be remembered by its boundary breaking ideas. To new Far Cry fans who picked it up on a bundle... ehhhh try FC3 out then come back to this one.

Don't let my playtime fool you, i must have at least a thousand hours into this on the Retail version from 2004. And before i start the review PLEASE to anyone wanting to play this DON'T play it on the stock version steam gives you, it's absolutely broken beyond playability. Get this simple easy to install community fix first: https://www.reddit.com/r/farcry/comments/vjmnm9/comment/idl6msr/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3 Now for the review: Do you like 80/90's Hollywood action movie cheese? do you like good visuals and great and challenging gameplay? This is it! This game has Open-linear mission design with very smart AI that rivals those seen in Half Life, a wide array of firearms to choose from, and a pretty decent, but cheesy story. This is the game where Far Cry started, Did you like taking out outposts in Far Cry 3? This game has those as part of the Mission levels! You have a detection meter, Binoculars to Tag enemies on your compass, and various ways of approaching every situation the way YOU see fit, with nothing but the sandbox's limitations holding you back. Treat the enemies in this game seriously, if you stand in the open, a few hundred meters away, they will see you, if you hide behind something, they will flush you out, if they are in a group, one member will suppress you, while others go for the flanks, it's honestly adrenaline filling. If you play on the hardest setting, the enemies will kill you just as fast as you kill them, a real challenge. That's all I've got to say, i'm just going to repeat this one thing one last time, DON'T PLAY THE STOCK VERSION. Get the community patch! i can't stress this enough, 90% of all the negative reviews stem from NOT having done this!

One of the best shooters ever made... the AI enemies are excellent, with brutal accuracy and good tactics. You will often be flanked, for instance. Combined with the tools you have at your disposal and multiple ways of approaching every situation, it makes for top-tier single player gameplay. Better than any other FarCry game I've played by far, story-wise as well as gameplay. Better than Cryisis apart from the sandbox features that are more of a novelty than anything. This is what a single player game should be. It was great in 2004 and it's still great in 2024. Don't listen to the people crying over it, they just find it too difficult because they can't use stealth or think tactically at all. Picture the original Ghost Recon games, but more of a fun shooter. It's basically that.
