"Fantasy Strike is an easy-to-learn fighting game that you will not be remotely good at." What if you could always flawlessly execute every special move input, when you wanted to, every time? Would you dominate your opponent? What if they were similarly skilled? What happens when all the excuses evaporate? Fantasy Strike is not an easy game. It is incredibly accessible in terms of execution and information given to both players; different coloured hit-sparks conveying frame advantage or disadvantage, flashing warnings when a throw could have been jumped out of and auras conveying a moves invincibility or armour. But every advantage is enjoyed by your opponent also. At the top level of fighting games, players are not dropping their inputs. Any hit will be confirmed into 20% damage. They are making strategic decisions at a blistering rate. Fantasy Strike allows you to get to this "real game" much faster than other fighting games, by removing the hundreds of hours of combo practice needed to always execute your moves. If you make 6 mistakes, you may have lost that round. Super Street Fighter II Turbo-like levels of high damage make for fast rounds and intense matches. Simple inputs do not a simple game make. The gameplay is very deep, and every pairing of characters must approach each other with a tailored gameplan or face embarrassing defeat. The characters are familiar to fans of the fighting card game Yomi, but their archetypes are familiar to anyone who has ever played a fighting game. [*]Warrior with fireballs and an invincible reversal, [*]Demon with teleports and air fireball, [*]Serious man with two very good specials which require charge, [*]Round man who can launch himself across the screen, [*]Stretchy-limbed ascetic with floaty jump, etc. This is the best Street Fighter game since Street Fighter IV, in my opinion. The characters are very well balanced against each other, with every character tournament viable. Even before the F2P transition multiple weekly events were being held online and the community is very active. I recommend clicking over to http://www.fantasystrike.com/accessibility just to see how many genre-first features this small indie developer has implemented in this game. Every care has been taken to do things the right way, and it shows. On Free-to-Play: Fantasy Strike is now Free-to-Play. You can play every character, for free, forever, in Casual and Ranked, without buying the game. You have in-game access to the character spotlight videos and the Practice mode. If you do buy the game, at ~60% of it's former price, you can also access the Arcade, Survival, and Boss Rush single-player modes and can challenge players of your choosing in online Friend Matches and in Local Play. Purchasable cosmetics have been added to the game: alternate colours; costumes; KO effects and entrance, victory and post-match training animations. These are obtainable only with Gems, the purchase of which supports continued development of the game. An optional subscription service, Fantasy+, grants access to Master Costumes in 8 colours for each character on reaching level 20, and double XP while subscribed. The real benefit of Fantasy+ is access to an incredibly robust replay viewer, allowing you to search for replays by rank and matchup, change speeds or advance frame by frame. I recommend paying whatever you feel you can afford for this game.

Until 7/21/20, the entirety of this game was behind a $30 paywall (which I paid), meaning that you had no access to any of this game's content whatsoever without paying for it completely, regardless of how much of that content you intended to explore; with that, the complaints about some of the game's features being behind a $20 paywall make little sense to me, but hopefully can be addressed in the future. Per the game itself, I very much like it and the online with crossplay is fantastic for the player base. Each character has what I consider to be a good design and plays fairly differently from another, which is surprising given how simplistic the game is. Soundtrack and graphics, while not up to Tekken 7 or the like, are fine for what this game is and the single player has decent variety for those who prefer that experience. Online with friends is very easy to dive into as are the other online modes. It is indeed a bummer that one cannot play with friends without payment (see my above statement) but for the price of free, I do whole-heartedly believe this game is worth your time if you are looking for a f2p fighting game that does not require a significant time investment to learn characters and mechanisms.

Tired of losing fights because you find it difficult to do a Dragon Punch? Play Fantasy Strike, and lose fights because you picked the wrong time to do a Dragon Punch! Gets you straight into the actually interesting challenging part of fighting games - reacting, predicting your opponent, and figuring out what to do and when in a split second - without any of the boring stuff. Streamlined, efficient, and deep. Just generally a whole lot of fun.

As a new player to fighting games I greatly appreciate this game. In Street Fighter 5 I would hop online and get destroyed and just get frustrated because I had no idea why I was losing or what I was doing wrong. I spent a long time in practice mode trying to learn combos and stuff but when it came time to have actual matches I just lost and had no idea why. Enter this game. I hop online here and even though I am still losing I can feel myself improving with every match. As I have very few moves and no need to worry about executing moves perfectly it has lead to me being able to stop and consider my options when I'm losing. Oh, do I keep getting hit when I try to jump in > phase out > drop gear? Mix up with jump in > forward normal or jump in > throw. I still lose a lot but when I can take just one round off of someone who was getting perfects on me it feels so satisfying. Being able to recognize what my flaws are and improve them feels attainable here, where in SFV I just feel like I'm flailing around aimlessly. (I do plan to go back to SFV after I put a decent amount of time into this game) And, as others have said, just because this game is simplified for newer players that doesn't make it 'easy' or mean that it lacks depth. It's just that that depth feels accessible now instead of 'you need to spend 50 more hours in training mode until you can do all your combos without thinking'. If/when this game comes to PS4 I plan to buy it again, even if I've moved on to other games by then just because I feel like this is such a fantastic learning tool for new players.

I've never really had any good exposure with actual fighting games (the most I played was Smash Bros), and watching high-level play at EVO was quite intimidating to me. I wanted to try a fighting game, but after looking into fighting games, they can get really complicated really fast. Then I learn about Fantasy Strike. Fantasy Strike is simple to learn, but still has noticeable depth to it. I have a lot of fun while playing, and there's many different characters with different fighting styles to choose from. There's a practice mode where you can try out each character in a controlled environment, then try the singleplayer arcade mode where you just fight 6 other characters in a linear progression. You can even skip a character if you get stuck on a matchup. If you don't want to play with the keyboard, the game can be played with pretty much any controller, and rebinding the controls is super easy; you can either do it manually from the options menu, or hold two buttons simultaneously on the main menu to immediately start the rebinding process. I was able to easily connect, bind and play the game my Xbox 360 Afterglow USB controller, and even my Nintendo Switch Joycons (via my computer's bluetooth feature). Regarding online play, I have a terrible internet connection, and when playing I noticed almost no lag at all. When waiting for a match, you can go into practice mode to practice combos, characters, or just mess around until you get paired with someone to fight against. I strongly recommend Fantasy Strike because it's very easy to learn with intuitive and customizable controls. I find it fun to play and it feels rewarding when my skills improve and I win a match, be it in singleplayer or multiplayer. I also want to mention that the developer of the game, Sirlin, is very active with supporting the game on both the forums and the discord; several times he's answered my (and others') questions in a very timely manner, and he even gave me some advice on playing certain characters after asking about a feature. Shoutouts to devs like Sirlin who go above and beyond to support their games and their respective communities.
