I've used FG VTT (Back when it was called FG Unity) for * a couple of one-shots * a charity stream (I'm not a streamer generally, FYI) * a campaing during pandemic that lasted about 8 months * my current campaign two sessions in Overall, I like it. It has its challenges and sometimes a certain feature requires a bit of research but I haven't had major issues and the devs have developed the product quite a lot. I haven't needed it much but from what I see, the community is also helpful. I've used it for D&D (I did play a "Warcraft" game using base rules) and a lot of rules are already integrated, so that's very cool. I don't know how it compares to other VTTs tbh, because I've only tried r20, which is another cool product but I got in FG simply because there is no sub fee. I bought it years ago and I own it to this day. A few humble suggestions to fellow DMs: * Check out Inkarnate, it's an amazing map tool * If you're coming from real TT, combats will be different - there is likely much less calculation thanks to FG's integrated rules, I found it best to ensure adding some descriptions so it's not a button-pressing sim * Check functionality and read about it! Things like being able to target other tokens wasn't visible to us first and those functions are super cool * Use language option in the chat, it works wonders (only people who know that language will understand) * Definitely do a session 0. I also recommend checking it yourself and creating a character yourself, even as a DM, so you understand how it works. So yes, I can't say it's the best VTT since I haven't tried others but I think at least its good enough (and has improved a ton since I acquired it) and the business model works well for me. We've had hundreds of fun hours so I definitely recommend it.

If you can't play TTRPGs in person, this is a great way to gather your pals for a game night. The tools are fairly easy to use and there's loads of tutorials on the Fantasy Grounds forums. There's no voice chat support, so having Discord or similar app available to everyone is a must.

I have said yes but in truth it is a tentative "Yes". I wanted a VTT (Virtual Table Top) mainly for my own use while DM'ing games, mainly DnD 5E (Dungeons and Dragons, 5th edition). It is a problem with all these systems that it is hard to understand what you need and how flexible the system might be. I like the fact it is local on your hard disk rather than a web page. I like that there is an option to allow the DM to own the modules shared with the players when they join his game (that would require an upgrade to the ultimate edition to allow players of the Free version to play). I tried the free demo but that did not help me decide so in the end I bought the base FGU package through Steam. Through that you get access to DnD 5E SRD (a free basic set of rules). The character generator feels broken. It is easy to think that they are pushing you to buy the paid for modules as that is how they make their money. Eventually I worked out that what I should have done was look at some YouTube videos and indeed it does look as though if you buy the DnD 5E Players Handbook you get a character generator that is useable. Indeed there are many neat features but then there are a lot of things that you have to generate workarounds for (without having to resort to coding). If I could have bought it at the 50% offer they (Well Wizards of the Sword Coast-who own DnD 5E) were running I would probably have bought it but I thought the basic DnD 5E SRD would be a good starting point. So my advice to anyone who is interested in FGU is to look at some videos of people using it with the system you want to use to give you the best chance of working out if it is any good. The other option is to try a month's subscription direct from Fantasy Grounds ($3.99 at the time of the review). Good luck

I should start by saying my time played shows incorrectly. It's actually several hundred hours. TLDR - The app is great from both a player and a GM perspective and will save both time. I wholeheartedly recommend it. This is one of the few you can buy instead of paying an eternal subscription though you can go subscription to try it out and make sure it's the right one for you. So weigh that if you expect to play for a while. There is a learning curve but if you are playing any of these games you've probably already been through a worse learning curve. This is a great app, automating a lot of what slows games down, allowing you to focus more on the game and the enjoyable times. From a player perspective the client for them is free. They can pay for a licensed version if they want and upgrade that to the GM version later if they get bit by the GM bug. My players use both versions of the player client. Neither version get ads and the free version isn't hampered in any way. I've added many new players from 80 years old to 18. Some had no experience with the game being run or the client. They all got the basics and were playing without slowing the game down within 10 to 20 minutes, relying on the client to keep them straight as far as the game. It's easier and quicker to get a new player going than playing in person. From a GM perspective the tool cuts my prep time significantly. I've delivered fun content to groups from 3 to 10 players easily. As a GM you can go light, buying pre-made modules hitting some light prep and using the base (free) source books where they are available, to pretty in depth, creating your own modules, adding your own classes, races, weapons, spells, and even 'code' to add weapon effects, spell behaviors, monster capabilities. I recommend it without reservation. I've run games over the last several years. They were both pre-made and home made. My player base crosses several time zones. I've brought in 5 players brand new to both Fantasy Grounds Unity and the game. I've built new items, classes and brought in home brew races. I do my own maps and add custom content to every game I play. Feel free to DM me if you have a question. I definitely don't know everything about the app, but I can answer some questions and maybe give some direction for the questions I don't have answers for.

As a DM, I enjoy being able to play with family and friends both near and far. It takes a little bit to get the hang of the setup, but so far, so good.
