Everyone knows the history of the game since launch so lets bypass the comparison with how it launched and go straight to how it is now. Also let's bypass what Fallout is and assume that you already know. Is it Fallout? Yes, like the other games its catered to a certain area which is unique in its own way, Fallout 76 is a modern version of the game. Are you avoiding it because it's online? Stop worrying and give it a go, Appalachia is ready now and waiting for you. I was cautious on this one and held off several times, but once you give it a go, you will see it isn't a factor and actually enhances the experience for this game (not saying there isn't a place for single player Fallout). Can you play solo? Yes you can. You don't need to play with others, have a crew, play it a specific way at all. The online component is there to enhance the experience, but you don't need to worry about it at all if you don't want to. Community events can be joined and left at will without needing to know or join anyone. Do you need to pay a subscription? Its up to you, the game is completely playable without it. I have played with on one on and off and its handy but definitely not essential. Certainly up front play it without Fallout 1st and make your decision while playing if you need it or not. Do I need to buy things? No. You really don't, there are a lot of free elements around that will keep you active, any purchases are there to enhance the base game for those that want them. There is enough to do and see without needing to purchase. What is the community like? Its one of the (if not THE) best online communities out there for online games, don't be afraid to start out and see big numbers on player levels, most are more than generous helping out new players and making sure you get a positive experience from the game. Is it like the TV show? It's a different part of the overall story, but factions are the same and there are a lot of familiar elements. There are also updates coming to cross over a bit more if that is what you are after. Is there replayability? Yes, you can play as long as you feel like you have interest in it. Once the story has finished there is still a lot that can be done with events, challenges and general exploring of the map. Every season brings new challenges and things to do with it. What are seasons? Seasons are regular releases of Fallout 76 that introduce events, sometimes areas, updates, tweaks, new gear. This is all layered onto the base game, so the core story isn't impacted by seasons. Why shouldn't I play? First and foremost, if you don't like Fallout is a good first start, its post apocalyptic and very styalised to a certain feel. It also isn't just a FPS, there are all sorts of elements in this game that expand on just being a shooter. If you are a Fallout purist, there are things and items available to build at times that might make you feel a bit like its not cannon or is not really Fallout. These aren't major and are mostly aesthetic items people build at camps, but its a consideration all the same. You are looking for a quick play, Fallout games are not a quick finish and take time. Most players have several hundreds of hours in the game so if you are looking for a quick turnover this isn't the game for you. Why should I listen to you? If you are still reading down here, just give it a go.

I avoided Fallout 76 when it first came out, because of all the reviews I heard about it being broken. Since I still love Fallout, I spent the last couple of years playing 3/4/New Vegas again, but then was finally tempted to take this for a test drive. Firstly, the game works well, at least in my experience so far. Yeah, there are a couple of bugs here and nothing, but nothing that's usually gamebreaking. For the sheer size of the game, and the fact that it's multiplayer, I think it's pretty sweet. I will say I'm super disappointed by the season pass system. This is another example of a game that would be 10x better if you could just earn everything instead of having to pay, just to get access to earn it. With that said, I've yet to purchase a Fallout 1st pass, and I've had a ton of fun playing the game. There's just certain elements (i.e., storage space, ammo/junk storage, etc.), which feel unfairly balanced towards players paying the monthly fee. I, for one, won't be paying $17.99 CAD a month just for access to have to grind out more stuff, so this game has reached its natural end for me for the time being. I'll still check back when new seasons start to see what cool free stuff I can earn, but apart from that, it really hurts the game's longevity, in my opinion. With all that said, I'd recommend the game. Just be aware of what you're getting into, and if you hate microtransactions with a burning passion, maybe just replay Fallout 4 or check out Fallout London.

This is a really tough game to rate, because there are a lot of factors to consider on whether or not someone will enjoy this. Let's get the obvious out of the way- yes, it's a survival crafting game. You build camps, you gather materials, you grind. Aside from all the abandoned buildings, it looks more like a zombie apocalypse than a nuclear one. I really do not care for the atmosphere in that regard. You also get perk cards instead of picking perks like in the main games. I won't explain that, I'm sure there are plenty of videos to explain it. It's not like a proper Fallout game. Over the years they have done a lot to fix it- now there are NPCs that give you quests. But you will never have meaningful dialogue or make meaningful decisions. It's basically an MMO, so don't expect much more than fetch quests and kill quests. However, it was enough to keep me entertained. I like the world of Fallout so I enjoyed crafting power armor and roaming the "wasteland", exploring the world of Fallout 20 years after the bombs drop. That was really what hooked me- I like to explore, and this game definitely scratches that itch. When it comes to the multiplayer aspect, it's another iffy element of the game. It's a lot of fun to adventure with your friends, but this game does not allow quest sharing which can get really annoying for people who care about that stuff. There are world events you can join in on, either to defend something or kill something. That's a lot of fun if you are into social activities like that. Camp building is a lot of fun- addicting even- so if you're into that creative stuff, I found it to be top tier. The latest update even allows you to rate people's camps. Then there is Fallout First, the monthly subscription. There is no nice way to put it- it's a scam. It's worthless. They offer a battle pass and currency shop for camp props and outfits. Most of the stuff in there you can't get unless you subscribe like other games-as-a-service. HOWEVER, without subscribing, the game is nearly unplayable. You are only allowed one storage crate and when it fills up you basically have to drop the extra loot. The ONLY way to mitigate that is to use a Scrapbox which is infinite and an Ammo Storage box. Guess what is only accessable WHILE you are subscribed? Absolutely disgusting. The last thing to mention are those "DLC" Expeditions you might have seen. The Pitt and Atlantic City. Don't be misled, those aren't new maps or map expansions. The best way I could describe it is a 1-2 hour "dungeon" set in a location outside Appalachia where you complete multiple objectives. It's fun, but after doing one once, I had no interest to return. Here is the bottom line for me. It's an enjoyable experience. I'm approaching 200 hours and nearly level 100. I've got a few days left of content, then I'm moving on and never coming back. This just doesn't have the holding power for me to care once I've seen all the content. Some people can get hundreds of ours out of this, but I imagine you must LOVE survival crafting AND Fallout has to be your favorite franchise ever.

Fallout New Vegas, 3 and 4 were far better than this game; But... If there is a chance for me to play a Fallout game with friends, I'd take it!
