Short and sweet: this is an oldie but goodie, and I really appreciate the diversity, city building, and flexibility to play the way I want to. There's something here for anyone that's a fan of 4x and/or turn based strategy games: with a HEAVY draw you in for "just one more turn" mentality. It's a very unique approach. The artwork is holding up surprisingly well for 2024. This truly is a gem. Get it and enjoy something unique, yet delightfully familiar! What a treat! CHEERS!

This is a good game. It plays like Civilization crossed with D&D. The tactical battles could be better and the game could have used a bit more polish. Note, if the savegame can no longer be loaded and the game crashes: Start a new game and then load the game in question - this solved the problem. Overall: Good! 08/10

Sid Meier's Civilization with magic, monsters, champions, quests and plenty of mayham for your main character to battle. Unlike Civilization beside battling with other fractions your main character builds a personal army which includes chooseable champions, incorporated monsters, and customizeable city derived warriors to clear your land by fighting monsters. This game is far more layered and complex than Civilization but all the same strategies apply. If you enjoy Civilization or games like it, I highly recommend this game. 54 achievements, 15 trading cards and 6 DLCs.

Ah... this game... I haven't played it for awhile, but I got bored looking for my next game to play, and decided to write a review. I consider FE:LH to be a sort of rough-cut gem. If you take the format/formula of the game itself, it's one of my favorite all-time. It's essentially a fantasy 4x + RPG, in some ways similar to Age of Wonders: you found cities to expand your empire, recruit heroes to lead your armies and take on quests, and go for one of several types of victories. Things I really like about this game: - Random map generation (like any 4x) - Lots of quests/events to make it feel RPG-ish in a 4x world - Lots of interesting heroes that you can recruit to your cause - Huge amount of customization options for your faction, leader, hero development (huge amount of hero skills) - Design your own custom units (this is as cool as it sounds; never found the equivalent in another game) - Tons of cool items to find, from powerful weapons to odd trinkets that will never have any practical use - Interesting city progression - three types of cities, each focused on military, economy, or science/mana - Powerful bosses that you can defeat for nice rewards, such as unique hero items or city bonuses - A campaign that establishes a story for the game, and detailed lore throughout Things that could be better: - Ranged combat is ridiculous: any ranged unit can hit any other unit anywhere on the map, even from behind walls - Randomly generated names for cities are an awful mishmash of letters; they would have been better off picking randomly from lists of pre-defined names. Fortunately, you can rename your own cities. Unfortunately, the AI will name its cities things like "Rooxxxli" and "Urguutu". - Diplomacy is... awful. (But then, diplomacy is almost always awful in 4x games.) - If you discover a powerful random item early on, the game can become very easy; if not, it can become impossible. - Some spells are way over-powered: I believe they are mana blast, mana shield, and dragon killer. I actually avoid using them because it feels like cheating. Mana blast basically says, "You die. (unless you're magic immune)" Mana shield basically says, "I won't die." Dragon killer basically says "If I can't kill you with mana blast, die anyway." Worst of all, these spells, once acquired, can be cast by ANY of your heroes! - Some bugs linger. There is an annoying movement bug on the world map that sometimes shows you can move one more space than you really can. So you go to move 5 spaces to intercept that enemy army, and then... find out you can only move 4. Darn. Overall, though, I think the pros outweigh the cons, and I still enjoy playing this game from time to time. If Stardock or another company ever used the same "formula" for a game, but gave it a bit more quality and polish, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Speaking of Stardock... one interesting thing is that this game was released over 10 years ago now, and they continued to support and update it with unexpected fixes and new content until, as far as I remember, a couple years ago. So good on them.
