A short and cozy roguelike deckbuilder set in the Fairy Tail universe. There are five characters you can play being Natsu, Lucy, Gray, Erza, and Wendy. There isn’t much of a story, but the pixel art animations are adorable. I’ve had no issues playing on the Steam Deck and the overall experience has been pretty cozy, albeit somewhat lacking. Although each character has a unique kit, it is frankly rare to make full use of them due to how short each playthrough is. There are 3 labyrinths, but only the first one allows you to modify your skills and cards. A lot of luck is needed for your build to shine, but without it, the combat can be overwhelmingly slow-paced and unsatisfying. There are amulets late in the game that can help finalize your build, but I feel too much time is needed to get there and most players would’ve had their fun by then. It took about 3 hours for me to complete the game. There was a lot of replay value though and I experimented further with different builds, amulets, and party compositions for the later labyrinths. For those interested in getting all achievements, it would take about 12-18 hours depending on your luck. The game may be lacking in content but I enjoyed what it had to offer. This a great example of how amazing indy games can be, great gameplay, perfect Pixel graphics and easy to pick up. Plus it opens up really well with numerous ways to build each character. Could use more playable characters down the line but we will see if it happens.

Story You can easily play the game without knowing anything about fairy tail (like me) and still get the story. Sure, I imagine it could help to know the characters, back story, etc. but it seems like I still get what's going on. Labyrinths Every run consists of three labyrinths. You have around 10 moves to make on the map till you fight the boss. There are normal battles, elite battles, a campfire, a shop, events, and lacrima. Lacrima is used to upgrade your character's abilities which are stored in a tome. After every run, you can save up your tome (up to four per character actually) to get into the next labyrinth with a saved tome. Battles The game's battle mechanic is best described as Easy to learn, and hard to master. It's as simple as it could be. You get 4 cards per turn, can redraw one time for 5HP loss, and play up to three cards (every card costs mana and you have three to start out with). It really gets strategic when thinking about combinations, countering bosses, doing magic chains, etc. Some of these words sound complicated. Fear not. Tutorial The tutorial is really good. They will literally explain everything to you in a short period of time. It's a short but detailed tutorial + there's a menu explaining keywords, etc. if you even need that. Meta Progression The game is a rogue-lite and there's progression to be made. First off, you unlock new labyrinths, forwarding the story and increasing the difficulty. There's a resource called "LumYou also unlocks amulets and stuff, so there's that. The meta progression is really engaging since it progresses the whole game and you'll be able to fight with two or even three characters at the same time, allowing for even more strategic depth. Pros and Cons + engaging thanks to the meta progression + impactful animations. I very much like them since they feel more alive and fun attacking with special attacks that even look hurtful. + easy to learn, hard to master. Even if you're not into deckbuilder but you're into the series: you can easily play and like this game. And if you're not into the series but love deckbuilders, this is for you, too. It can get really strategic in battles. + good music. Most of the time when playing deckbuilders I just mute the game and listen to music, but I do in fact like it in this game. + good performance. I did not have any problems playing the game on my desktop as well as on my laptop. I have not tried to play on my Steam deck yet. +- some boss battles can take quite a bit of time. This is neutral since some people like it and some don't. Personally, the "long" fights did not feel draining because I was already much into the fights at this point but I can imagine some people disliking this. It also depends on your strategy and how much you're willing to take (as in: how much HP loss) for battles to get longer. - I would like to unlock even more things like cards. - basic story. I did not need that really. - harder difficulties are missing. Don't get me wrong, I did NOT play through the whole game yet so maybe it's something I don't need in the end, or it's unlocked later, but I can imagine hardcore deckbuilding fans wanting even more of a challenge (Tho I don't think the game is easy and look at how many deckbuilders I've played). Conclusion Fairy Tail: Dungeons is a highly addictive and strategic rogue-lite deckbuilder. It's easy to learn but hard to master. Even if you're not into the series but into deckbuilders, you'll easily grasp the basic story and love the battles as well as the progression. The animations add to the fun since they are impactful, short, and still fun to watch. There's plenty of stuff to like and I'm honest: I never thought this game would be so good since I thought it would be a short cash grab - but it's definitely not! You should definitely get it! The moment I saw Lucy's abilities involving all the spirits, I was like yeah this is it. Love this game, the pixel art is gorgeous, especially the interesting monsters. I think the portraits could use a bit more work with a little bit of lineart but yeah the game is fun. Maybe in the future they could add gamemodes to make it even harder etc. Hope to see more of it, I was repeatedly refreshing this game to buy it.

So far, it's good. It's charming. It's cool looking. Interesting combo attacks. I've played for an hour or so and if you like Slay the Spire, you'll probably like this. It's worth the current price with how much I've played. I think this will be a great game for fans of card battlers. I'll be playing a lot of it.
