Short version: Pros: + Good premise + Enjoyable combat (initially) + Movement controls are satisfying + Soundtrack is very atmospheric + Decent character customization Cons: - Story is bland - Exploration is a bit boring - Combat gets repetitive towards the end - Graphics border on bad - No voice-acting - No respec option (experimentation is not encouraged) "Long" version: Faery – Legends of Avalon is a role-playing game developed by Spiders and published by Focus Entertainment. You play as a faery, awaken from statis and set on a quest to save many different regions, all based on traditional folklore. The game’s story is rather weak – one would expect an RPG to feature an engaging story, filled with character development, intriguing revelations and a sense of high stakes. Unfortunately, Faery – Legends of Avalon fails to come up with an interesting enough story and the characters are all very bland and one dimensional. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2777427858 When it comes to gameplay, this game is divided into exploration and combat. You can customize your character with a semi-decent character creator and it was a welcome inclusion. I tried to create the ugliest faery I could. Exploration controls and feels great. You are nimble and get to fly around with precision and extreme grace. Environments tend to be decently populated initially, but I found them devoid of anything interesting the bigger they were. It is very frustrating to look for an item to interact with when you cannot see it from a distance and must wait until the draw distance works in your favor to actually see the darn thing. You go around maps completing innumerous quests for NPCs, alongside the main quest – unlocking a myriad of gear – you also get extra XP used to level up. Combat is turn-based and you get to use regular and special attacks to defeat your enemies. While combat is fun at first, it grew a bit boring towards the end. While exploring, you can recruit different characters to aid you in your quest. Some are powerful, but some are absolute stinkers. I found myself always gravitating towards the same two or three side characters. As mentioned above, finishing quests earns you XP and so does combat. After leveling up, you get to spend a few skill points on abilities. These are usually very useful, but you do not get nearly enough skill points to experiment with – so I just focused on the same two or three abilities from beginning to end. Furthermore, there is no way to respec your build in Faery – Legends of Avalon , so if you pick up a skill you do not like and you saved, you are stuck with it. It was rather annoying to deal with. So yeah, pick a skill or two that sound cool and just focus on those. Side characters can level up automatically, but you can disable this – I recommend you doing just that, as some might pick abilities your main character is already focusing on and you need versatility in your army. This, however, is sometimes easier said than done. I wanted my character to focus on fire and earth magic and every time I came across enemies that resisted these two elements, my main character was basically dead weight. Most spells are either powerful single target spells or slightly weaker area of effect spells that target multiple enemies at the same time. There are also status conditions that slowly whither enemies’ health away. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2834051118 While I appreciated how enjoyable the combat was, initially, I found myself rather bored of it after the halfway mark (give or take) – so the game does not really innovate as much as it should. There are a few encounters where you must focus on the healers first as they keep healing the boss, for example, but those are few and far between. Personally, I believe that Faery – Legends of Avalon is not a looker. I would go as far as to say that it looks quite bad. It also does not help that it lacks a distinct visual style and it looks generic, overall. What makes this point particularly frustrating, is that it features some of the coolest concept art I have ever seen. Whoever came up with the character designs did a stellar job. Unfortunately, that concept art did not translate into good looking character models (for the most part) and the environments lack detail and polish. Regarding sound, here are my thoughts. There is no voice acting and most characters speak gibberish. This could be fine but the writing is not that great either. The sound effects during exploration and combat are serviceable but nothing to write home about. The soundtrack is enjoyable – it fits the aesthetic and immerses you into the world. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2834051204 Faery – Legends of Avalon is a game I really enjoyed at first but ended up getting bored by after the halfway mark. While I still recommend it, it is not a strong recommendation as the game is a bit too easy, very repetitive and the game world feels void of anything interesting. The game is rather inexpensive but I feel like it is still not worth its full-price. Maybe give it a whirl if you can get it at a lower price and if you are really into RPGs and are desperate for a new game. Final score: 6 out of 10.
