cool game but good luck reading the dialogue lol. obviously needs voice-over. it's actually a bit overly derivative, to be honest. gameplay is fun and a mix of OG starfox and 64, and includes sick-ass space harrier bonus levels, which is a huge plus. it's kinda disappointing to not have multiple paths, considering it's a defining aspect of the series. the game is still in early access, so every review is either from yesterday or possibly an earlier build of the game, so keep that in mind. at its core this game is for a very specific audience, which i'm definitely a part of. you're either that person or some kid who has no idea what the hell this game is. if you're the latter, probably wait until it actually releases. otherwise, you know you want it.

Hey kids, remember Starfox for the Super Nintendo? Remember that time it ran at more than 4 frames a second? Me neither. Luckily, Ex-Zodiac has you covered. Ex-Zodiac is an on-rails space shooter where you play as Not Starfox and the game runs at a good framerate. In this game you move on rails and shoot enemies, Talk with your doctor to see if Ex-Zodiac is right for you. Side effects may include but are not limited to: nostalgia trips, sweaty hands, and having a good time. Ex-Zodiac is not responsible for any fun had by the player.

This game knows exactly what it wants to be and slaps on every level of doing that thing. P.S. to MNKY, I'd play a whole game of hover bike levels.

Lightning fast fun. It's a shame there's so few missions and they're each so short. You can front to back this game in about an hour for some simple mindless fun.

Play this if you want Star Fox, play Whisker Squadron: Survivor if you want something SF-inspired with Roguelite mechanics. (Slight edit: I guess you could also view WS as a game with a LOT more playtime, vs this game's hour or so. EZ has some replayability in redoing missions for better scores or for getting secrets, but that's it. I still prefer EZ to WS though.) Dang cool game, really nails that whole Star Fox 1/2 vibe. I only beat a couple levels so far, I'm using mouse and keyboard to play it which I feel probably isn't the best method, I'll start over with a controller. Cool graphics, cool gameplay, all very interesting stuff. Also ultra-cool that you can limit the game's FPS to 15 and play in 3:4 ratio, the game legitimately looks like a late-SNES game, or you can just play with FPS unlocked, full res and everything, if the retro vibe is too much. Issues: -Default controls are kinda iffy, I don't know how I feel about controlling seven keys with the left hand. If I do more KB gameplay, I'll drop the mouse, switch to WASD and move the other buttons to the numpad or something. -The map being a straight line bugs me a bit. Dunno if it'll open up as I go or if there's a ton of secret levels (I found one, it was rad), but seeing the straight line of locked levels isn't a good look. -Too many homing shots from the enemies, which results in a lot of circle strafing the whole screen so they don't hit you. Also feels like the enemy's homing shots are a bit too well-tracking. Could maybe use a slightly smaller projectile and/or a slightly smaller hitbox too, just so they're not as much of a handful. Dear god there's so many homing shots... Minor issues: -Some sound effects seem... missing. Kinda feel like there should be a little woop-woop-woop noise when you're charging shots at least. No cool lo-fi explosion noise when the boss explodes, either. -The distortion effect on the talking character's little avatar is a bit too fancy for an SNES-emulating game and it's a bit tacky. Opinions: -Kinda iffy about the main team just being two characters, though I guess I'm just used to SF's 4/5. -Kinda wish the game had some cool SF2 intro or something, some low-poly robo-dragon flying through space, a pan of the MC's mothership, something. The game's in EA right now so it's just fluff, but still. Title screen is just your fighter slowly spinning. -The "Easter egg" boss feels too high-poly and has too high of a texture resolution. Super funny though, audibly chuckled. -The game could use a tacky "instruction booklet" with tacky 90s SNES art, a vague plot, control schemes, dodgy tips and some character bios. I hope they eventually add something like that.
