Evil Tonight is a very good horror action adventure game and another great game by DYA Games the same people that made Viviette and Bot Vice, alright the story. The San Paolo De Rosa academy of Performing Arts in Florence now lays abandoned, rumors of multiple paranormal activity circulating and preventing the school to be reopened, but that is where Sylvia comes in, as a modern exorcist she isn't afraid of fighting spooky evil as fighting spooky evil is her job. She has overcome countless horrors with her ability to materialize the evil of haunted places. But tonight, things don't go as planned. Alright the likes, the gameplay is very good it's basically like Resident Evil, fight monsters and solve puzzles. The combat is well balanced being hard but fair, there is a little bit of bunk here and there, but still pretty fair. The weapons are good you have your standard pistol to a shotgun and unlike some Resident Evil games and like games were you have to solve a puzzle in order to get some of them, here you just find them. And they're all quite useful especially the knife when dealing with some enemies. The puzzles are good they're very fair with clues on how to solve them, it still requires a little bit of brain work with certain puzzles, sometimes you do have to brute force your way through and the puzzles also have randomized answers, but how to solve them is still the same, so it's not bad. The pixel graphic art style is really good and it’s no wonder since it's made by the same people that made Viviette and Bot Vice, it has incredible uses of colors, designs and scenery that just makes you want to stop and stare at it all.The levels are very good it takes place in a performing arts school, but the school is quite diverse and very interesting to look at as a Performing arts academy it has all sorts of props and weird items that just makes each room stand out and fun to look at all the details and weird stuff. The enemies and bosses are all really good each one has their own unique look that is really quite imaginative from toy enemies to evil shadow creatures and such, the boss is also quite good while it is the same antagonist each time she takes on different forms with different powers that keep you on your toes when you face her. The story for the most part is good it has good buildup and a very good mystery with plenty of notes that paints a sad story of the antagonist and what she went through, but there is one big problem with the story, but I'll get to that in the dislikes. The characters are good each one quite memorable Sylvia was very good she can be a bit of a brat and a bit dumb, but she has a good heart and generally wants to help people, also the antagonist Violetta is also quite interesting you can understand why she's the way she is and you definitely feel bad for her. The music was good each track was a joy to listen too, my personal favorite happens to be the song for the first boss fight. The notes were good as not only does it make the antagonist Violetta a three-dimensional character, it also gives a little insight to what the school was like before it was abandoned. The atmosphere is good nice and spooky as you're wandering around corridors afraid of what may jump out at you. Now is the game scary yes, while it does rely on jump scares from enemies popping up from out of nowhere in a room you think is safe, but it's well paced and doesn't really wear itself out. Alright the dislikes, there are a few bugs in the game one bug was after I beat the final boss the cut scene froze, you can still skip that cut scene, but it was a real pain because it kind of took me out of the story just a bit and speaking of the story. The ending I have a problem with it. basically reading the notes we find out that the reason Violetta died was because of this guy Patrizio and indirectly this girl Graziella. How well, Violetta got pregnant because of Patrizio and she didn't know what to do, she couldn't get an abortion and if she was found out she'd be kicked out of the school along with Patrizio. But then Graziella comes in and offers her to give her a potion that will take care of the problem, in the notes we're led to believe that Graziella poisoned her because Violetta was a better actor and dancer than her to the point where it seems like Graziella who comes from a very rich and influential family that donates heavily to the school, to the point where it seems she sabotaged the girl, but there is a twist when we find out that she didn't poison her it was Patrizio. He did it because Graziella blackmailed him that after Violetta got the abortion he would basically cut off all contact with her and Patrizio feeling like he didn't want to live without her and she wouldn't be able to live without him, he poisoned her.Problem with that is I feel like that was a copout I mean Violetta is still dead because of Graziella’s stupidity even if indirectly, I feel like it would have been a lot better if Graziella actually did poison her, just keep her the bad guy. But even if the story still wanted her to be indirectly the cause of it I feel like she wasn't exactly punished as she still becomes a famous star, I feel like it would have been better if due to her feelings of guilt and remorse over destroying two lives she actually quits acting and becomes a doctor or something, hell she could even become a mother as well and express true remorse over what she did. Also the fact that Patrizio doesn't even get punished I mean it says he could be dead, but I don't know the whole ending feels anticlimactic and a bit of a letdown to an otherwise good story. Also I have a problem with Commando mode basically it's the hardest challenge in the game where it's more action focused were you have to fight enemies all the time even in rooms that you cleared, problem is I wish the save points could heal you like in casual mode, I don't know just to make the experience a bit more balanced. Lastly completing all the challenges doesn't really unlock anything new in the game, like no sound tracks or art book or anything just like in Viviette, I don't know I feel like something should happen. Now that I told you all this, Evil Tonight is a very good horror action adventure game and another great game by DYA Games the same people that made Viviette and Bot Vice, it has very good gameplay, really good pixel graphic art style and really good enemies and bosses. Okay do I recommend this game absolutely even though the ending kind of sucked, the rest of the game is really good and I highly recommend it especially if you're a fan of Resident Evil styled games.

Pros: + Perfect recreation of the SNES era graphics, the game looks beautiful, the sprites are detailed and perfectly animated to give each character and monster a distinct personality and screen presence + Old school survival horror ratio of healing\ammo managment, puzzles, combat encounters + Incredibly so this game might have some of the most enjoyable boss fights i've had in any survival horror (Boss battles being a famous weak spot of the Resident Evil series for example) + Original setting that gives the player a great enviroment to explore, this distorted, corrupted art school in Florence, Italy is complex, intricate and memorable + Great enemy variety that forces the player to think well what to use to overcome the obstacle, how much ammo and which weapon to use for the job Cons: - There is no map, which means you'll have to remember where every important room in the academy is, it can be troublesome when key items are found much after finding the room where they need to be used, or when resuming your playtrough after a couple days of pause - Extremely short, even on first playtrough it should not take more than 5 hours to see the end credits - Targeting sometime can be a bit janky making you waste a few bullets because your character has not turned the way you wished her to Evil Tonight is a great, small SNES survival horror experience that puts you in the 'drop dead gorgeous' role of Silvia, a medium that has been tasked to exorcise an abandoned Art Academy in Florence with a dark history, during her adventure she will uncover the dark past that has led to the academy's curse while also having to rescue a group of 13 year old kids that have accidentally found themselves trapped in this nightmare with her. Sporting good combat, great puzzles, atmosphere and exploration, Evil Tonight will surely keep any fan of the genre entertained for the short time it takes to complete it. Recommended 8/10

I finished this game in hardcore mode, and it's like Resident Evil where you will have to manage your resources to complete the game. However, the game does have its drawbacks: [*]Resource management is crucial. If you run out of bullets on regular monsters, you're stuck using a knife against bosses. The problem is that the knife deals minimal damage and has a stamina system to consider. Plus, you have to get up close to the boss, making you an easy target for unavoidable skill shot damage. It feels like the game puts you in a tough spot – either restart the entire game to stock up on bullets before the boss or face the frustration of relying solely on the knife throughout the boss fight. [*]The knife's movement can be frustrating. When you use a melee attack, you automatically move forward. Even though monsters get knocked back, if they're near a wall, you end up taking contact damage during the attack. Also, when fighting a boss, they don't get knocked back after a melee attack, making it highly likely that you'll get contact damage in most cases. [*]The game's save system is quite old-school. When you die, you lose all progress and return to the last save point. This means the monsters you previously defeated come back, and you have to redo that part. While I think this design is intentional, it can be frustrating because modern games usually auto-save progress, offering a smoother gaming experience. [*]The death scene is unskippable, and I've encountered the "You are dead" message numerous times during gameplay. It takes about 10 seconds to return to the main menu and reload the game. [*]There's no map available, so you have to memorize the locations of doors that require specific keys. [*]The puzzles mainly involve math and memory. Often, you'll find yourself taking pictures of clues with your phone or using a calculator to solve them. Despite these issues, I'd still recommend the game. It's solid and fun, just remember to load up on shotgun bullets before boss fights. Overall Score: 7/10

Great game! Very spooky and charming game with gorgeous pixel art that does a good job evoking SNES style JRPGs. I'd definitely recommend it, only thing to note is that the lack of a map leads to a bit of annoying hunting around for that one specific room you have to go back to, and the final stretch of the game throws a lot of spongey enemies at you without more health pickups to compensate. Those annoyances aside the game is certainly worth a try, even if you don't typically play horror games.

This game, in my own opinion, was very rewarding and fun, The gameplay, storyline, presentation, and conclusion was all well executed. This was a unique tale told in similar format. I love that it doesn’t hold your hand and allows you to feel smart through forcing exploration and puzzle solving, in all the right ways. The main character is super charming and doesn’t take themselves too serious. Additionally, the game doesn’t overstay its welcome. There is so much room for this to be a continued series and I can only hope that the developers continue with this. Evil Tonight 2: The Evil’ing. No crap, I love this game.
